“He has a father’s heart, apastoral heart. He looks at itand has real compassion. Heis going to be the kind of guythat kids are going to trust.”

-Bill McCartneyformer Colorado head coach

Les Miles, the 2002 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year and former assistant with Michigan, Coloradoand the Dallas Cowboys who built Oklahoma State into a force in the Big 12, became LSU's 32nd head foot-ball coach on Jan. 3, 2005.

In four short years, Miles turned the Oklahoma State football program into one that was nationally com-petitive, despite competing in-state against one of the country's dominant programs.

Now as the head coach of the flagship university in the state of Louisiana, it's Miles' mission to not onlykeep the Tigers among the elite in the nation on the playing field, but to also continue the program's success inthe classroom and in the community.

On the field, Miles is a proven winner and he was the obvious choice for LSU, a team that ranks secondin the SEC in victories over the past five years with 48. He's a skillful manager who brings to Baton Rouge foot-ball expertise, an eye for evaluating talent, and a personality that has energized the program. All talents that arenecessary for running and maintaining a top 10 college football program.

Miles led the Cowboys to three straight bowl appearances, an accomplishment Oklahoma State had notachieved since Jimmy Johnson started a string of three straight post-season games beginning in 1983. In addi-tion, Oklahoma State's appearance in the Cotton Bowl to cap the 2003 season marked the first time in 55 yearsthat the Cowboys appeared in a January bowl game.

Miles' college playing and coaching career includes experience under some of the most noted coaches incollege football. At Michigan, he played for legendary coach Bo Schembechler and later served onSchembechler's staff. He also worked with Gary Moeller at Michigan and Bill McCartney at Colorado.

As head coach at Oklahoma State, he built a consistent winner out of a program that had recorded onlyone winning season since 1988, and had posted a record of 13-20 in the three years prior to his arrival at OSU.After going 4-7 in his first year as head coach in 2001, he took the Cowboys to consecutive winning marks of8-5 in 2002, 9-4 in 2003 and 7-5 in 2004.

Prior to his tenure as head coach at Oklahoma State, Miles was the tight ends coach for the DallasCowboys for three seasons from 1998-2000. During his three years with the Cowboys, Dallas won one divi-sional title while participating in the playoffs twice.

Miles comes to LSU off of his second tour of duty with Oklahoma State. Before going to Dallas, Milesserved as Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator for three seasons from 1995-97, including an 8-3 season andAlamo Bowl berth in 1997.

Success has followed Miles at every stop of both his playing and professional career. He was a two-yearletterman at Michigan (1974-75). During those two seasons, Michigan was a combined 18-3-2, had finalAssociated Press national rankings in the top 10 and participated in both the Rose and Orange Bowls.

He joined Bo Schembechler's Michigan coaching staff in 1980 for the first of two stints as a coach in AnnArbor. In 1980 and 1981, Michigan combined for 19 wins and just five losses, won the Big 10 title in 1980 andplayed in the Rose and Bluebonnet Bowls, respectively. Miles left Michigan for Colorado, where he served onBill McCartney's staff from 1982 through 1986. In his final two years at Colorado, the Buffs earned bids to theFreedom Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl.

In 1987, he returned to Michigan, where he would spend the next eight years as part of one of the mostsuccessful eras in Michigan football history. From 1987 to 1994, Michigan won 71 games, made eight straightbowl appearances, including four trips to the Rose Bowl, and finished no lower than No. 21 in final AssociatedPress national rankings.

The 1989 Michigan squad finished 10-2, won the Big 10 championship and finished ranked No. 7 in thecountry. That would be Coach Bo Schembechler's final season as Michigan's head coach.

When Gary Moeller took over the Michigan program prior to the 1990 season, Miles remained on the staff. The 1990 team finished 9-3, winning the Big 10 title and the Gator Bowl. The following season (1991), Michiganfinished 10-2 and with a No. 6 national ranking. Miles coached some of the best players to wear the Michiganuniform, including eight first-team All-Americans, 10 total All-Americans and 12 players from Wolverine offen-sive lines that were NFL draftees.

Born November 10, 1953, Miles earned his degree in economics from Michigan in 1976. Les and KathyMiles have four children, Kathryn, Leslie Matthew, Benjamin and Macy Grace.

TheLouisiana state flag along with a "Fleur-de-Lis" will both be represented on the LSU football helmet this year. The"Fleur-de-Lis" has been traditionally used to represent French royalty, and in that sense it is said to signify "perfec-tion, light, and life". The Fleur-de-Lis is synonymous with the city of New Orleans. In addition, LSU, along with otherteams from the SEC, will wear a sticker that combines that shapes of the states of Louisiana, Mississippi andAlabama, the states that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Keeping Them Out Of The EndzoneLSU's defense has allowed only 13 points over the past two games, holding Mississippi State to just 7 first quarterpoints, while limiting Vanderbilt to a pair of field goals in the 34-6 Tiger victory. By holding Mississippi State to 7points and Vanderbilt to 6 points, it marks the first time since 2003 the Tigers held back-to-back SEC foes to 7 pointsor less in consecutive road games (Oct. 18 at South Carolina, 33-7 and Nov. 15 at Alabama, 27-3).

Bringing The HeatAfter recording only 1 sack in the season-opener against Arizona State, LSU has now recorded 17 sacks in its last3 games. Week Game Disruption Results1 North Texas Hurricane Katrina Game postponed on Aug. 30 2 Arizona State aftermath of Hurricane Katrina Game moved to Tempe on Sept. 53 Tennessee Hurricane Rita Game delayed 2 days to Sept. 264 Miss. LSU Injury ReportThe Tigers continue to be without the services of RB Alley Broussard (knee - out for season), LB E.J. Kuale (ankle),DE Kirston Pittman (ankle - out for season) and OT Peter Dyakowski (foot) for the Florida contest. Center Ryan Miller (knee) start-ed against Vanderbilt, but was injured on the first series of the game. His status for Saturday's game is not known atthis time.

Taking Note On The Tigers Since 2000Here is a look at some notable trends for LSU during the 68 games its played since 2000 … LSU is 42-4 when lead-ing at halftime and 39-4 when leading after three quarters … The Tigers are 48-5 when scoring 20 or more points and42-2 when scoring at least 25 points in a game … On the other hand, the Tigers are 3-12 when failing to reach the 20-point mark … LSU is 15-5 in games decided by 7 points or less and 7-3 in games decided by 3 points or less … LSUis 35-2 when holding opponents to fewer than 100 team rushing yards and the Tigers are 23-1 when having a playerrush for 100 yards.

Tiger Defense Scores AgainFor the second time this year, the Tiger defense puts points on the board as the LSU "D" recorded a first quarter safe-ty against Vanderbilt and then followed that with a fourth quarter touchdown against the Commodores. In the first quar-ter, LSU DE Chase Pittman sacked Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler in the endzone for a safety, giving the Tigers a9-0 lead. Then, in the fourth quarter LB Ali Highsmith picked up a fumble and raced 22-yards for a TD to cap thescoring for the Tigers. LSU's defense has now accounted for 2 touchdowns and a safety this year. LSU's other defen-sive TD came against Tennessee when LB Kenny Hollis intercepted an Erik Ainge pass and returned it 3-yards for ascore.

Defense Turns In Back-To-Back Big GamesBo Pelini's defense turned in another gem on Saturday as the Tigers held the SEC's No. 1 rated passing offense andthe league's No. 2 ranked offensive unit to just 6 points and only 138 yards of offense. Had it not been for a 40-yardrun on the final play of the game, the Commodores would have ended up with just 98 yards of offense. Nevertheless,Vanderbilt still managed just 25 yards rushing on 26 attempts and preseason All-SEC quarterback Jay Cutler man-aged to connect on 11 of 32 passes for 113 yards and a pair of interceptions. The following is a look at the numbersthe LSU defense has put up over the past two weeks in consecutive wins over Mississippi State and Vanderbilt:

Defense Has Held Opponents Out Of Endzone For 7 Straight QuartersLSU's defense will carry a streak of 7 straight quarters without allowing a TD into Saturday's game against Florida. The only TD LSU's defense has allowed over the past two games came in the opening minutes of the Mississippi Stategame when a blown coverage led to a 66-yard scoring pass for the Bulldogs. Since that play, LSU has shut down theopposition, allowing only a pair of field goals to Vanderbilt last week.

The Legend

I'd been warned prior to my first visit to Baton Rouge that the legendary Death Valley mystique was amyth. That assessment couldn't have been more wrong. Tiger Stadium was as loud as any I've everheard during the dramatic fourth quarter of Saturday's Georgia game, the festivities surrounding it asadvertised.

The streets were lined with purple and gold. Smoke emanated from the grills in the parking lot. Shouts of"Go Tigers" and "Tiger Bait" echoed from the stadium deep into the heart of campus.

And that was just Friday night. -- Stewart Mandel, SI.com (Sept. 21, 2003)

From there, theTigers stretched their lead to as much as 21-0 when Kenneth Hollis returned an ErikAinge pass three yards for a TD late in the second quarter. The momentum shifted toTennessee in the second half, as the Vols scored 17 fourth quarter points, including a28-yard field goal with just over two minutes left in the contest to force overtime. Inovertime, LSU's Colt David connected on a 31-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 27-24 following their possession.
