World War II : was the most widespread war in history

marked by mass deaths of civilians

the deadliest conflict in human history

Start of the WW II : Three years of Germany mounting international tension including :- 1) the Spanish Civil War- 2) the Anschluss (union) of Germany and Austria- 3) Hitler's occupation of the Sudetenland and the invasion of Czechoslovakia - culminated in the German invasion of Poland on 1 September

- Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later (on 3 September).

The end of the WW II : on 11 July 1945, the Allied leaders met in Potsdam, Germany

As Japan continued to ignore the Potsdam terms, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August.

on 15 August 1945 Japan surrendered with the surrender documents 

the WW II finally ended with the formal surrender of Japan on 2 September 1945

The WW in Great Britain :

Britain's declaration of war against Nazi Germany in September 1939 included : - the Crown colonies and India - did not automatically commit the other states (f.e. Australia, Canada…)

-the Irish Free State chose to remain legally neutral throughout the war

After the German occupation of France -> Britain and the empire stood alone

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill successfully lobbied to the USA Prezident- Franklin D. Roosevelt

In August 1941, Churchill and Roosevelt met and signed the Atlantic Charter
