Kingsdale Foundation School

is A SAFE SPACE At Kingsdale Foundation School we actively promote and support an ethos where everyone can feel safe and listened to and should something go wrong as at times it may, know where to go to for support or guidance and have a person to talk to who can be trusted. The school has an impressive support network, which includes an extensive pastoral team working with each year group, mentors, school counsellors, an art therapist, safeguarding team, links to outside support agencies and a staff cohort regularly trained in issues surrounding the mental well-being and safeguarding of young people. However, we appreciate that not everyone will always feel comfortable talking to a member of staff or may wish to speak to someone outside of school hours. For those members of our school community who feel they need support or advice or, wish to report a concern we actively encourage them to contact us on one of our confidential emails where a trained member of staff will be there to provide the support required:

Teacher Recommendation

This week, Mr Towers from the English department would like to recommend Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi. The limits of fifteen-year-old Kambili's world are defined by the high walls of her family estate and the dictates of her fanatically religious father. Her life is regulated by schedules: prayer, sleep, study, prayer.

When Nigeria is shaken by a military coup Kambili's father, involved mysteriously in the political crisis, sends her to live with her aunt. In this house, noisy and full of laughter, she discovers life and love - and a terrible, bruising secret deep within her family. Mr Towers recommends this book as it’s a moving portrayal of a coming of age story.

Recommended to students in Key Stages 4 & 5.

Student Recommendation

This week, Addison Mitchell in Year 11 would like to recommend The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie. When Thomas Lang, a hired gunman with a soft heart, is contracted to assassinate an American industrialist, he opts instead to warn the intended victim – a good deed that does not go unpunished.

Within hours Lang is butting heads with a Buddha statue, matching wits with evil billionaires, and putting his life (among other things) in the hands of a bevy of femme fatales, whilst trying to save a beautiful lady ... and prevent an international bloodbath to boot. Addison would like to recommend this book due to the complex plot and the comical narration. Recommended to students in Key Stages 4 & 5. Please send your recommendations to [email protected]

Year 7 Girls’ Cricket Team News!

Last week, the KFS Year 7 Girls’ Cricket team went to Ewell County Cricket Club for their first fixture and competitive match as part of the Surrey Schools ‘Smash-It’ tournament.

There were 18 schools in total who were all aiming to reach the Gold group. The Kingsdale girls came second in the group stage, losing 1 and winning 2, therefore going into the Silver group. There were then 6 teams left at this stage, with the top two playing in the final. Kingsdale did not disappoint, winning all games and smashing the final by a big margin.

It was a great day for Kingsdale after a long layoff due to the pandemic and it was lovely to see the students enjoying themselves. Well done to all involved, great to have you back out there winning!!

Year 9 & 10 Boys’ Tennis Competition Win!

Last week, the year 9/10 Boys’ Tennis team, made up of Lucas Ebert, Luca Tonan Gonzalez, Isaac Forde and Raul Toronjo-Hussain, had their first Division 1 fixture on Thursday 6th May against Alleyn's School. The boys played amazingly well in both the singles and doubles to beat Alleyn's 10-2. Well done to everybody involved!

House News

House Creative Corner

In the Creative Corner this week, we thank Vida Lukas, Year 7 – Dove House, whose challenge from the House

Team was to decorate this plant pot.

She went on to say: . . .

“I also have sunflower seeds which I intend to plant on

the weekend. I hope this happy themed pot will bring

sunshine to everyone”.

Kingsdale Cooking Challenge

This week’s submission for the Healthy Kebabs Challenge is from Ariana Clarke, Year 7, Eagle House. Ariana writes: “For the chicken kebab, I made a marinade from garlic, natural yoghurt, paprika, and tomato ketchup and left the chicken in it for 30 minutes. I then placed the chicken, peppers and onions on a skewer and cooked it. For the fruit kebab, I placed washed and chopped fruit on a skewer.”

Well done to Ariana for creating what looks like a hugely delicious dish! House points rightly go to Eagle House.

HOW TO ENTER: If you have a special dish you want to share with us, email your entry to:

Mental Health Awareness Week

This poster was created by Keira Nembhard, Year 7 – Eagle House, in light of Mental Health Awareness Week. This is a great poster Keira! Well done for thinking of so many other individuals who may be, or who have recently gone through, a difficult time. Extremely thoughtful and reaffirming.

A Daily Reminder

The past cannot be changed

Opinions don't define your reality

Things always get better with time

Judgments are a confession of character

Happiness is found within

Positive thoughts create positive things

Smiles are contagious

Kindness is free

You only fail if you decide to quit

What goes around comes around

Love yourself
