he world’s largest metal
coin was minted in 1644 in
Sweden by a company
now known as the Avesta
Steel Works.
The 320 year old copper
coin measures 14 by 24
inches, is half an inch thick
and weighs 44 pounds. It
is a ten daler denomination
coin, and in 1644 it would
buy two cows.
Avesta was one of
Europe’s largest copper re-
fineries during the 17th
century. Its mines dated
back to the 1300s, when
iron was mined. In 1619
the company was granted
a monopoly to refine, mint
and sell copper coins. In
1619 Gustav II Adolf
granted the company a mo-
nopoly to refine, mint and
sell copper coins. All cop-
per coins of the realm
were produced by the com-
pany until 1831, when
minting was transferred to
Stockholm.
During those years
Avesta minted 25,000 cop-
per plate coins in 1, 2, 4, 8
and 10 daler denomina-
tions.
Most of these coins
were exported to other
parts of Europe, where
they were melted down for
their raw material instead
of being used as media of
exchange. Only three of
these coins are known to
exist today.

2007 Presidential $1 Coin Proof
Set (PD0)
A new series of $1 coins honoring the
Presidents of the United States in the
order that they served began in Febru-
ary 2007. To commemorate these
historic coins, the United States Mint is
striking and issuing a set of four
Presidential $1 Coins per year in proof
condition. Images of the first four
presidents, Washington, Adams,
Jefferson and Madison, appear on the
obverse of the first set in 2007. Each
coin has a reverse design featuring a
striking rendition of the Statue of
Liberty. These coins also feature edge-
incused inscriptions of the year, “E
Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust”
and the mint mark. The size, weight and
metal composition of the new Presiden-
tial $1 Coins are identical to that of the
Sacagawea Golden Dollar. This set is a
shining embodiment of the United
States Mint’s commitment to quality
and excellence.

The “histamenon nomisma” is an an-
cient gold coin from the Byzantine era. Also
referred to as “gold Byzants”, these are some
of the early gold coins to feature Jesus Christ.
Goldline is pleased to present a limited num-
ber of these gold coins - ranging from 800 to
1000 years old - excavated from a buried
cache in the ancient Middle East region.
Each gold coin from the Byzantine era
features an unusual c-shaped design. The ob-
verse (on the convex surface) features a de-
piction of Jesus Christ sitting on a throne hold-
ing a Book of Gospels in His left hand and
raising His right hand in benediction. A circle
of light, also known as a nimbus, surrounds
His head. This is the case with the sample coin
shown above.
The reverse of this ancient gold coin (on the
concave surface) often features the emperor
carrying a military standard and globe sym-
bolizing world rule. With Greek lettering
Ancient Byzanthine Gold coins featuring Jesus
around the edges, these gold coins represent
the unique mix of the ancient Byzantine Em-
pire itself: Orthodox Christianity, Greek lan-
guage and Roman law.
The most unusual aspect of these coins to
the modern eye is definitely the c-shape de-
sign referred to as scyphate that makes them
very difficult to photograph. No one is really
sure why coins from this period were shaped
this way, although some people believe it may
have been due to the ease in which the coins
can be stacked.
All gold Byzants were hand-struck on broad,
thin planchets. Due to their age and minting
technique, no two coins are exactly the same.
Most of the gold Byzants offered by Goldline
were minted in Constantinople, the wealthi-
est and possibly most civilized city of the
Middle Ages, now know as Istanbul, Turkey.
Gold Byzant ancient coins were the most
widely used piece in international commerce
for both their standard weight and the role of
the wealthy Byzantine Empire in world trade.
The riches of the Byzantine Empire, (the
Eastern half of th Roman Empire which sur-
vived for 1,000 years after th decline of the
Western half)

Bermuda is a small island situatedin the Atlantic Ocean, enjoying a subtropical climate, clear waters, and thrivingcoral reefs. It was discovered in the early1500s by Juan de Bermudez, but onlysettled in 1609 when the Sea Venture wascaught in a hurricane, carried hundreds ofmiles off-course and wrecked on the reefs.Called the “shipwreck capital of the Atlan-tic” the shallow reefs that encircle thistiny archipelago are studded with morethan 300 shipwrecks dating from the1500s to the 1990s. Twelve of the most famous wreckslocated on the reef around Bermuda arenow beautifully modelled and meticu-lously reproduced in the prestigious Ber-muda Shipwrecks Coin Collection and wewould like to take this opportunity to offerthis collection to you every 28 days untilcomplete.
