Design details

The Madsen has a rather sophisticated anduncommon operatittg cycle not used in any othercrew-served weapon. The machine gun uses a

mixed recoil-operated locking system with a

hinged bolt that is patterned after the lever-actionPeabody Martini breechblock.[2] The recoiloperation is part short and part long recoil. Afterfiring a round, the initial recoil impulse drives thebarrel, barrel extension, and bolt to the rear. Apin on the right side of the bolt moves backwardin grooves in an operatittg cam plate mounted tothe right side of the receiver. After I2.7 mm(0.5 in) of travel, the bolt is cammed upward,

awayfrom thebreech(the" short"portion ofthe recoilsystem). The barreland barrelextensioncontinue to move rearward to a point slightly exceeding thecombined overall length of the cartridge case and projectile(the long portion of the recoil system, responsible for theweapon's low rate of fire).

After the breech is exposed, an odd lever-typeextractorlejector, mounted under the barrel, is pivoted to the

rear, extracting the empty case and ejecting it through the bottom of the receiver. The bolt's operatingcam then forces the bolt face to pivot downward, aligning a cartridge feed groove in the left side ofthe bolt with the chamber. While the bolt and barrel are retuming forward, a cartridge-rammer lever, mounted on the barrel extension, is pivoted forward, loading a fresh cartridge.

Operational use

[Ip to and including World War I

It was used extensively by the Imperial Russian Army, which bought I,250 examples and deployedthem during the Russo-Japanese war, and was deployed (arming infantry companies, mountaintroops and later storm troopers) in 1914 by the German Army in7.92 mm calibre. It saw serviceduring World War I. It was considered expensive to produce, but was known for its reliability. It was

sold to 34 nations in a dozen different calibreslal before and after World War I, seeing service inChina during the Warlord era.

Among the fighting forces with the Madsen in their arsenalsin the immediate aftermath of World War I was theCzechoslovak Legions in Russia, fighting the Bolsheviks inSiberia.[5]

Inter-war era

The gun was bought by Paruguay in the 1920s and earlyI930s as that country quietly girded for war with Bolivia overmutual claims to the Gran Chaco region, and it served in theParaguayan army in the Chaco War (1932-1935). Almost400 were on hand when the war began, and more were

bought as the war progressed.l6] Bolivia also fielded Madsensof the same calibre as Paraguay (7.65x53 Mauser) during the

conflict.l3] The Argentine Army detachment which protectedneutrality along the border with Paraguay and Bolivia duringthe Chaco War used the Madsen in combat operations at leastonce, in the course of an engagement against members of theMakå tribe commanded by deserters who had looted a farm

8 cm Granatwerfer 34 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

8 cm Granatwerfer 34From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 8 cm Granatwerfer 34 (8 cm GrW 34) wasthe standard German medium mortar throughoutWorld War II. It gained a reputation for extremeaccuracy and rapid rate of fire, although much ofthe credit should go to the training of the crews.

The design of the weapon was conventional andit broke down into three loads (barrel, bipod, baseplate) for transport. The barrel was smoothbore. Attached to its bipod were a traversinghandwheel, and a cross-leveling handwheelbelow the elevating mechanism. A panoramicsight was mounted on the traversing mechanismyoke for fine adjustments. A line on the tube

could be used for rough laying.[l]

The 8 cm GrW 34lI was an adaptation for use inself-propelled mountings. A lightened versionwith a shorter barrel was put into production as

the kurzer 8 cm Granatwerfer 42.

The mortar employed conventional 8 cm 3.5 kghigh explosive or smoke shells with percussionfuzes, having a range ofjust over a kilometer. The range was extended by fitting up to threeadditional powder charges between the shell
