CROSS-COUNTRYThe season got off to a quick start with our first three races at Montoe Park. All of the

girls improved and repeatedly set new personal bests for themselves. During the mid-season, theteam line up was changed and we lost four girls due to injuries and other issues. The seven thatwere not injured brought the team to a 7-3 record and a sixth place finish at NVL's. Regardless ofthe midseason turmoil, the seven remaining girls stepped up the challenge and ran in the StateMeet.

On the Men's side, we did exactly what we set out to do: Win the NVL Championship forthe first time in 6 years. After a loss to Woodland in week 1, we knew that every meet was criticalto attaining goal. We followed up by beating Holy Cross by one point, winning the Veterans ParkInvitational, and later the league title. The time and effort put forth by this team not only paid off intitles but made every day upbeat and fun. With the loss of six seniors, there is room for JV runnersto fill in varsity. However, with the returning leadership of Dave Soto and Ricky Grewal, alongwith talent from our two All-NVL sophomores, we just might repeat as Champs. Captains AlanaMorro and Crazy Chris Laffcrty will miss this team and hope for the best for future teams.

FIELD HOCKEYThe good times this team shared was a great way to

send off the seniors of the team, despite having no SeniorNight. We were a very strong team defensively however ourrecord didn't show it. A tremendous amount of talent will bereturning to next years squad. Captains Marissa Irizarry, CaitlinAlex, Jill Buckingham, and Kelly Thompson along with fellowSeniors Crystal Barnosky, Meghan McCleary, Lynn Gullberg,Natalie Prirnini, Gina Rinaldi, and Amanda Ventresca would alllike to say thank you for a great season and wish the best to allfuture generations of WHS Field Hockey. -Marisa Irizarry #21

FOOTBALLThis years football season began with a moderate

start. After consecutive victories against Kennedy andWolcott, we rose to 2-2. Unfortunately, what followedwas a five game losing streak that was broken by a winover Sacred Heart. The year was ended with a hard-foughtloss to Torrington which means they will get to keep "The Helmet" until next year. On a positive note, manyunderclassmen got playing time this year and will returnto fight again next year just as they did so this year.-Anthony Fusco #72

BOYS SOCCERAt the beginning of

the 2003 season we hadhigh hopes, with 12returning seniors. Our goalswere to achieve a .500record and make the statetournament. With Mr.Street as the new VarsityCoach, we worked hard inthe off-season to getourselves ready, knowingthat we would be pushed tothe limits of our skills. Mr.Street gave us a challengeand we put everything wehad into it every day. Eventhough some parts of theseason were disappointing,there were many highlightsincluding...Joe Pillamaking more breakawaysaves than anyone andwatching Westcott take outone more person. ImagineParkhurst not talking to theRef s, Smiley notsmiling.. .But the bestmemoryof the season isdefinitely the night gameagainst Kennedy. Wesomehow got two red-cards, not one, but TWO( Imean c'mon how often doyou ever get a red card?And we got two in onegame? WHY?) We cameback with two goals to tieit. The one thing we willnever forget is the fanscounting down to the endof the game...ten, nine...aswe came down thefield...eight, seven...andseeing the ball cross the

box and Kyle Lipeika stuffing it into the back of the net,sending the game into overtime. That game sums up ourseason well. We didn't win a lot. We lost more than wewould have liked. But in the end we had a lot of fun. Wehad fun playing the garbage can game, World Cup, andsoccer basketball. We will miss Samir yelling for the ball,Parkhurst's stupid jokes, and the friendships that we haveformed. But as we end we wish good luck to next yearssquad as they try to return Watertown Soccer to the top ofthe N.V.L.-Patsy Polletta #14 and Chris Parkhurst # 22

Colleen Sakl, BeccaCapinera and Emily Hough were all named 1st team All-N.V.L. with Lindsey Canuzzi representing Watertown in2nd team All N.V.L. Colleen Sakl and Emily Hough werenamed All-State. At the annual banquet, Colleen Sakl andBecca Capinera received the MVP award, with ColleenSakl also receiving Best Offensive Player. GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING

This year the Watertown High School Girls SwimTeam had a very good season. We finished up with an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 NVL record. At NVL's weplaced third following Naugatuck and Holy Cross.Captains Alyssa Smith and Leah Desjardins were happywith this outcome.

We had a few girls stand out for point scoringwho were Heather Thomas, Caitlin Seals, MariaCieslewski, and Heather Murphy. These four also brokethe 12-year-old 200 Freestyle Relay record, by over onesecond, with a time of 1:44.69 The team could not havebeen more proud. Congratulations girls!

VOLLEYBALLThe Watertown Indians Girls Volleyball Team

was led by three seniors. Starting for the Indians wereCaptain Cailin McGaughan and Jackie Kiefer, as well asSeniors Albe Ercoli, Sophomores Leanna Pratt, LindsaySalvietti and Debbie Sequenzia. Other importantcontributing members were Senior Audra Christolini,Junior Kyle Slaybe, and Freshman Lauren Chikoski.Despite the team's rebuilding year, the season ended offwith a 1-17 record, but that doesn't reflect the talent thatthese girls possessed.-Cailin McGaughan #30

ICE HOCKEYThe Watertown-Pomperaug hockey season was one outrageous ride. With a quick start theteam ended up already behind with a 1-6-1 recod almost halfway through their season. Theteam took an immediate 180 degree turn and won the next six games in a row. For the firsttime they obtained a winning record for this season. The team decided to keep the tension highcoming into their last game against Joel Barlow knowing they needed to win, for an advance tothe state tournament. The most enormous pig-pile erupted after the last second of the clockticked off reveling a Watertown-Pomperaug victory of 3-1. Sadly they were dejected byCheshire in the first round of the state tournament, but accomplished a new record, 2 years in arow Watertown-Pomperaug made state tournament appearances. BOYS SWIMMING & DIVINGThe Boys' Swimming & Diving team had an exceptional season this year. Led by Mr. Miller and a strong senior

class, the team swam its way to victory this season. With an undefeated record in the Naugatuck Valley League going intothe postseason, Watertown used that momentum to capture the title of Naugatuck Valley League Champions.

There were many memories along the way, primarily ending an eight year losing streak to Naugatuck by beatingthem soundly in their own pool. As thrilling as it was to beat them, the most exciting dual meet came earlier in the seasonagainst Sacred Heart. The energy in the pool and stands was incredible as we beat the defending champions 96-90.

With our heads high and confident, Watertown had the lead almost the entire way through the NVL Championshipmeet. The result was Watertown winning the title and being the first Watertown High School team in eight years to win itall.

We all had a great season both in & out of the pool. Despite losing eight seniors, The team is looking to repeat aschampions because of the returning talent. -Chris Lafferty & Steve Chapman

BOYS BASKETBALL

Plagued by injuries, the battered Boys Varsity Basketball team missed the state tournament bya mere three games. Losing some of their key players during the season, the team found theiroriginally large and talented lineup cut down to a much smaller one, providing a difficultobstacle to work around.

The season wasn't what we wanted but we showed up and played hard every game,concluding with a 5-15 record. Departing seniors are Kevin Hartery, Reggie Hunter, ChrisBaylis, and co-captains Kyle Lipeika and Jeff Schmaling.

GIRLS BASKETBALLThis year the girl's basketball team did really well with a 4-16 record andchallenged a lot of the teams.

The wins we had were very great for our morale and motivation. Weshowed some teams that we shouldn't be taken lightly and that we would fight nomatter what the deficit. All the fans, families, and friends that came to the gamesshowed great support and dedication to the team.

At the annual banquet, Leanna Pratt received MVP and Most ImprovedPlayer. She was also honored with second team All-Suburban. Two year captainKelly Jo Delauretis received the Coaches Award.

Kelly Jo is the only senior departing this year. The team would also like tosay goodbye and thank you to Asst. Coach Mrs. Hladki who is moving to Ohio.

The Watertown High School Cheerleading squad took on their long season withhard work and a serious attitude focused on success. Aside from attending the footballand basketball games in the fall and winter, the squad participated in four maj ortournaments including the NVL's. The squad placed fourth in the Sacred HeartConnecticut Classic, third in the Wolcott Classic, fifth in the North Shoreline Classic, andsixth in the NVL' s.
