The Polish-Canadian Women’s Federation was founded by Jadwiga Dobrucka in 1956 in order toorganize women of Polish origin for the purpose of preserving their cultural values and making a posi-tive contribution to Canadian society. Jadwiga Dobrucka was an ardent social activist and a teacher byprofession. She was an immigrant who well understood the problems of immigrant women in a newcountry, their struggle to survive and at the same time integrate into Canadian society.

The organization is non-profit and charitable in character, based on democratic and Christian prin-ciples. In the past 52 years, our organization has grown to over 20 branches across Canada. TheFederation is an active member of the Canadian Polish Congress, the National and Provincial Councilof Women, the National Citizenship Council, the Polish Womens’ World Federation and Polonia of theWorld.

The Polish Canadian Women’s Federation is cultivating and preserving the Polish Language andtraditions while developing ties with the adopted country, showing concern for the family as a socialunit, performing various charitable activities with a stress on helping needy children and cooperatingwith other, mainly women’s organizations.

The Jadwiga Dobrucka Youth Fund was established at the National Convention of The PolishWomen’s Federation in May 1963. The main goal of the fund is to help youth, between the ages of 13and 24, of Polish descent in Canada. Since then, many young people have been helped financiallythrough competitions, artists’ expositions and scholarships.

Historia Federacji Polek w Kanadzie

Federacja Polek w Kanadzie była założona w r.1956 przez Jadwigę Dobrucką aby stworzyćorganizację dla kobiet polskiego pochodzenia w celu zachowania ich wartości kulturowych oraz abyumozliwić im pozytywny udział w życiu kanadyjskiego społeczeństwa. Jadwiga Dobrucka była zzawodu nauczycielką i gorącą społeczną działaczką. Była imigrantka która rozumiała potrzeby kobi-et imigrantek w nowym kraju, rozumiała ich trudności w zaadaptowaniu się i budowania swojegobytu a także w ich wysiłkach włączenia się aktywnie w życie społeczne Kanady.

Jest to organizacja niedochodowa o charakterze charytatywnym operta o demokratyczne ichrzescijańskie wartości. W ostatnich 52 latach naszą organizacją rozwinęła się – ma obecnie 20 odd-ziałów w całej Kanadzie. Jest aktywnym członkiem Kongresu Polonii Kanadyjskiej, the National iProvincial Council of Women, the National Citizenship Council, Światowego Zjednoczenia Polek iPolonii Świata.

Federacja Polek w Kanadzie pracuje w celu zachowania polskiego języka i tradycji jed-nocześnie rozwijając swoje związki z nowo adoptowanym krajem a także dbając o rodzine jakokomórkę społeczna . Federacją zajmują się różnymi akcjami charytatywnymi kładąc nacisk na poma-ganie potrzebującym dzieciom. Jednocześnie współpracuje z innymi, szczególnie kobiecymi, organi-zacjami w Kanadzie.

Fundusz Młodzieżowy im. Jadwigi Dobruckiej był założony na Walnym Zjezdzie FederacjiPolek w Kanadzie w maju 1963. Głównym celem tego funduszu jest pomoc młodziezy pochodzeniapolskiego w Kanadzie- wiek od 13 do 24 lat. Od czasu założenia funduszu wiele młodych osób otrzymalo pomoc finansowa poprzez konkursy, wystawy artystyczne oraz stypendia.

Kajetan Sienkiewicz, voiceKajetan Sienkiewicz was born in 1998 and has been fascinated by music since early child-hood. He is in Grade 7 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Toronto. Kajetan startedsinging lessons with Maestro Vaguif Kerimov at the age of seven and is currently studyingvoice with internationally recognized soprano Kinga Mitrowska. He attends the “Kids onBroadway” musical theatre program and this year was cast as Gilbert in the musical “Anneand Gilbert”. Kajetan also studies piano and enjoys playing soccer. He is excited to performamong the other young performers in the Young Talents Concert.

Joanna Gorska, viol in Thirteen-year old Joanna Gorska started playing piano at the age of four and violin at the ageof eight. She also plays classical guitar and is an experienced accompanist. Currently, she isa student in the distinguished Young Artists Performance Academy at the RoyalConservatory of Music in Toronto. Joanna has won numerous awards, medals and scholar-ships at various music festivals. She has placed sixth in Canada in her age category in pianoand second in violin and was awarded the silver medal twice at the Provincial Music FestivalCompetitions. In 2010 she participated in the Junior Division of the Third Canadian ChopinFestival in Mississauga and was invited to perform at the Chopin Concert organized by theCanadian Polish Congress in London. Joanna also enjoys reading, traveling, and spendingtime with her family and friends.

Julia Debowska, voiceTwelve-year old soprano Julia Debowska has been studying voice under the tutelage ofMaestro David Varjabed. At the age of five Julia was the winner of the XXXIV Speech ArtCompetition of the W. Reymont Foundation and in 2005 she received the Special Award ofthe Marszalek Woj. Lodzkiego in Poland. She was also awarded first prize at the GdanskFestival and was the winner of the Fifth Amateur Singing Contest with John Santos. In 2011she received the first prize and audience award at the Festival of Polish Songs in Burlington.Julia's performances include Tribute to Mentors Concert, Peel Music Festival AwardsConcert, Salon Poezji Muzyki i Teatru “Usmiechy Lwowa”, “Romancing Chopin” Concertwith Toronto Sinfonietta and Opera Belcanto Concerts in Kleinburg and Barrie.

Sebastian Gajewski , voiceSebastian Gajewski is thirteen years old and studies piano at the New Conservatory of Musicat the grade 7 level. He has received many awards at competitions including prizes at theNew Conservatory of Music Festival, Kiwanis Music Festival and Davenport MusicFestival. Sebastian has also studied singing at the Ware Academy of Music. He sings solo athis local church and performs at Polish Canadian community events. Sebastian also playsclarinet and guitar.

Shantel Kaczmarek, viol inShantel Kaczmarek was born in Peterborough and is fifteen years old. When she was fiveyears old, her mother suggested that she should play piano. Several years later Shantel askedto take violin lessons as well. She has participated in the Kiwanis music festival every yearand has won several prizes in the competition. Along with her piano and violin studies, shealso plays organ at the Polish mass at Immaculate Conception Parish in Peterborough. Shantelhas been a member of the Kawartha Youth Orchestra since 2009 and is currently principle sec-ond violin. Her teachers are Witold and Ewa Swoboda. Shantel also enjoys playing sports.

Jessica Siemionkowicz, voiceJessica Siemionkowicz is fifteen years old and lives in Brampton. She is in Grade 9 at St.Edmund Campion Secondary School. Along with playing the piano and singing, she is alsoa martial artist. Jessica has been receiving musical training for the past eight years at theFrederic Chopin Music School and has reached level 5 in both piano and voice. Her teacheris Kinga Mitrowska.

Adam Filaber, c lassical guitarSixteen-year old Adam Marcin Filaber was born in Toronto and is in Grade 11 at the CatholicLycee Philip Pocock. He has graduated with a diploma from the Polish School im. MikołajaKopernika and is fluent in the Polish language. He started playing piano at the age of tenunder the tutelage of Janusz Bosak and other teachers. At the age of twelve he began play-ing classical guitar and shortly after, electric guitar. He has also learned to play tenor saxo-phone and bass guitar and has been mostly self-taught. He has performed at various com-munity events at the John Paul II Cultural Centre, at St. Patrick’s Church and with his schoolorchestra. . His performance was presented in OMNI TV program “Na Luzie”. Currently,he is taking guitar lessons from graduates of Humber College and he is hoping to be able to study Jazz andContemporary Music at Humber College next year.

Melissa Stolarz, piano and voiceSixteen-year old Melissa Stolarz began playing piano at the age of six. Since then her pas-sion for music has grown. She has been successful in winning numerous awards at the PeelMusic Festival and has competed in several Provincial classes. Her exceptional talent ismatched with strong dedication. Over the years, Melissa has been actively involved in hercommunity, accompanying a Girl’s Choir as well as a Jazz Band. Most recently she was rec-ognized by the Arts Faculty of SMLS and given the music award for the student demonstrat-ing the highest standards and excellence in music. This year Melissa completed her Grade 9piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music with First Class Honours. She studies musicat the Oakville School of Music & Performing Arts, where she is also learning to play violin.

Tymoteusz Shura, pianoFifteen-year old Tymoteusz Shura has been playing the piano since the age of ten under theguidance of professor Halina Nikonenko. Presently he is preparing for the Grade 7 pianoexamination at The Royal Conservatory of Music. Tymoteusz has been adorned with awardsand honours from competitions including Peel Music Festival, Ukrainian Music Festival andDavenport Music Festival. He is currently in Grade 9 at Lorne Park Secondary School wherehe also plays percussion in the school band.

Oskar Shura, pianoSixteen-year old Oskar Shura is presently preparing for his Grade 7 Piano Examination atThe Royal Conservatory of Music. He has studied piano since the age of eleven under thetutelage of professor Halina Nikonenko. Oskar has taken part in numerous festivals and com-petitions including the Peel Music Festival, Ukrainian Music Festival and Davenport MusicFestival and has been decorated with awards and honours of distinction. Kasia Kacala, voiceSixteen-year old Kasia Kacala graduated from Dewson Public School and King EdwardMiddle School where she received her first music award in 2006. She has taken singing les-sons at the Frederic Chopin Music School and currently studies voice with Tina Torlone.She is preparing for her Grade 7 voice exam and attends Applewood Heights SecondarySchool. For her love of music, Kasia thanks her grandfather who devoted much of his timeto show her the beauty of music.

Konrad Gajewski , pianoSixteen-year old Konrad Gajewski is studying ARCT piano at the New Conservatory ofMusic. He has received many awards at piano competitions including New Conservatory ofMusic Festival, Kiwanis Music Festival, Markham Music Festival, Peel Music Festival andDavenport Music Festival and received the New Conservatory of Music scholarship in 2009.Konrad also plays the clarinet and saxophone and performs frequently at Polish Canadiancommunity events

Claudia Czechowski , voiceClaudia Czechowski is sixteen years old. From the youngest age she enjoyed singing, danc-ing, acting, and playing the violin and piano. Since the age of six Claudia has taken pianoand violin lessons at Mavo Academy in Mississauga. Since she was nine, she began to per-form with "Kabaret Pod Banka", and she continues to do so to until this day. At the age oftwelve, Claudia began taking vocal lessons, and she was a top ten singer in her age catego-ry at iPOP!, the International Presentation of Performers in Las Vegas. Claudia has per-formed at The Tsunami Relief fundraiser in Toronto, SPK, Polish Consulate, and the PoloniaPrzyszlosci Children's Day Concert. She has also participated in the CHUM Picnic Festivalat Ontario Place. Currently, Claudia attends Cawthra Park Secondary School, and is enrolled in the Regional ArtsProgram as a drama major. Also she is performing with the "After Hours Club" which has produced a variety of con-certs dedicated to Polish poets and songwriters.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Arthur Kapron, Guest Artist , pianoArthur Kapron was born in Hamilton and lives in Stoney Creek, where he attended CardinalNewman Catholic Secondary School. He began to study piano and guitar at the age of sevenat the Conservatory of Musical Studies in Stoney Creek. Currently he is studying piano atthe Caskey School of Music. He has received awards from the Greater Hamilton MusicFestival, Kiwanis music festival at McMaster and Burlington Rotary Festival. Arthur per-forms both guitar and piano frequently and also sings and plays both trumpet and piano in alocal band. He has participated at the Festival of Friends at Gage Park in Hamilton. InSeptember 2008, he was one of the participants of the First Concert of Young Talents organ-ized by the Polish Canadian Women’s Federation in Mississauga.

Jury of the Young Talents Concert- biographies

Janet Lopinski - a graduate of the Royal Conservatory (ARCT gold medalist), University of Toronto (Bachelor of Music) and University ofCincinnati (Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts). Her doctoralthesis examined the Preludes of Fryderyk Chopin. She is currently on thefaculty of the Royal Conservatory where she teaches piano, piano peda-gogy, music history and theory. She served as Chief Examiner for RCMExaminations from 1996-2002 and is co-author of the three-volume musichistory handbook “Explorations” published by the Frederick Harris MusicCompany.

Kinga Mitrowska born in Montréal, graduated with distinction fromthe F..Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. Engaged by the Warsaw StateOpera sung numerous leading roles, as Susanna in W.A.Mozart.s Le Nozzedi Figaro,Musetta in G.Puccini’s La Boheme, Adelle and Rosalinda in DieFledermaus by J.Strauss, and Violetta in G.Verdi,s La Traviata. Winning theGold Medal at the Maria Canals vocal competition in Barcelona, she wenton to win prizes and distinction at festivals in New York, Prague, Montreal,Vienna and Tokyo. Between such events she recorded for Polish Radio andTV. Upon her return to Canada, Kinga continued her acclaimed successes

with lead performances with the Toronto Operetta and Opera in Concert. In 2005, for her artistic achieve-ments she was decorated with the Medal of Merit by the Polish Ministry of Culture and was nominatedwith Quartetto Gelato for the Gemini Award. In 2008, the Government of Ontario honoured Kinga withHigh Award for promotion of Polish culture in Canada.

Walter Buczynski - Composer and pianist, is one of Canada’smost esteemed musicians. Born in Toronto, he made his orchestral debutin 1955 with the Toronto Symphony under the baton of Henry Rzepusplaying the Chopin F minor piano concerto. In 1960 he was the firstCanadian ever to compete in the prestigious Chopin Competition inWarsaw. He continued his studies in composition with Darius Milhaud inAspen, Colorado (winning the Fromm Award in 1955), and in Paris 1960-62 with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. From 1962 to 1969 he taughtpiano and theory at the Royal Conservatory of Music. In 1969 he joined

the University of Toronto Faculty of Music as professor of Theory and Composition. His composi-tions have been performed from coast to coast, Europe and the United States. He has been recordedand broadcast frequently on radio and television in Canada by distinguished Canadian artists. He wasPresident of the Canadian League of Composers from 1974-75. In 1977 he received the QueenElizabeth medal for achievement and development of Canadian culture. In 1992 he received theGovernor General’s 125th Commemorative medal. In 2008 the Polish Government bestowed on himthe Gloria Artis medal for his musical achievement and body of work. After 30 years of teaching,Walter Buczynski retired from the University as Professor Emeritus.

Margaret Maye - mezzosoprano, actress, producer, organizer. She is afounder and President of Epilepsy Cure Initiative - an organization that works forepilepsy cause and her artistic production company Bravo International- Singeron Stage. Her events feature established and young Canadian, Polish and inter-national artists who are presented in the best of venues stressing first-rate artisticand production values. Classically trained in Poland as an opera singer andactress, today she is an eclectic vocalist, a classical singer. She established herselfas an outstanding performer in various musical styles and genres with a reper-toire ranging from opera and oratorio, to include operetta, music theatre, cabaret

and jazz. In recognition of her significant contributions to the arts, Margaret Maye was presented with the presti-gious Order of Merit from the Ministry of Culture of The Republic of Poland and with the Silver Award forExtraordinary Achievements from the Canadian Polish Congress.

Dr. Lopinski has performed as soloist and collaborative pianist, and has presented lectures, workshopsand master classes in Canada and in the United States, Europe and Korea. She has adjudicated festivalsand competitions throughout North America and was a member of the jury of the First CanadianChopin Competition in 1999. She was the Artistic Director of the Canadian Chopin Festival 2010 and afounding member of the Canadian Chopin Society.

Polish Teachers’ Association in Canada is a central organization associating teachers of Polish language and coordinating activities of the Polish language schools in Canada. For over 50 years it has provided professional assistance to teachers by publishing a quarterly magazine “Mysl” and textbooks to teach Polish language to students living in Canada. It organizes conferences to train in the methodology of teaching.
