I.N.A.'s Pledge RedeemedS.A. Ayer

From NBT’s Treasure Trove

August 16, 1947 was a highly emotionaloccasion for I.N.A. On that day, freeIndia’s first prime minister, JawaharlalNehru, hoisted the national tricolour onthe ramparts of the Red Fort. The same

day, the government of independent Indiaofficially released a picture of thehistoric occasion with the caption, ‘Inone of the most impressive ceremoniesconnected with the declaration of

The hoisting of Indian National Flag on 16 August 1947 from Red Fort by Shri JawaharlalNehru, the first Prime Minister of India was a historic moment for each and every citizen offree India.

On the occasion of Independence Day of India on 15 August, we are producing a chapter onIndian National Army (I.N.A.) from the NBT book titled Story of I.N.A., authored byShri S.A. Ayer. In this chapter, the author has described the significance of this historical dayfor the soldiers of I.N.A. and the future of the soldiers of I.N.A.

independence, the national flag of freeIndia was hoisted over the turretedbattlements of the historic Red Fort ofDelhi on August 16 by Pandit JawaharlalNehru while the old guard of the IndiaNational Army rallied to redeem anunfulfilled pledge.’ The four-year-oldpledge of the I.N.A. was to hoist thenational tricolour on the viceroy’s housein the civilian masses in east Asia whoheard that pledge from Netaji’s own lips,it was a sentimental dream; to oldrevolutionaries like Baba Amar Singhand Baba Osman Khan, it was aim; to theI.N.A. it was a military goal to be reachedat any cost. Though beaten on the battle-field but wearing its sanctified I.N.A.uniform, a contingent of the I.N.A.personnel participated in the Red Fortfunction.

When all the excitement and hero-worship following the Red Fort trialdied down, and independent India settleddown to its new role of a free nation inthe comity of nations, the I.N.A. founditself in the wilderness. When the waveof admiration for the I.N.A. wassweeping over the country, SardarVallabhbhai Patel, addressing a publicmeeting in Calcutta, said that the I.N.A.would form the nucleus of the army ofindependent India. But that was not to

be. The I.N.A. Inquiry and ReliefCommittee, with Sardar Patel aspresident and Sri Prakasa as generalsecretary did its best to findemployment for the rank-and-file of theI.N.A. But the I.N.A. was not absorbedin independent India’s army. Its officersand men were told that they were free toapply for appointment de novo; in otherwords, they could all start at the lowestrungs of the ladder. The reason givenwas that otherwise there would“structural difficulties in the armedforces”.

When the British started bringing theI.N.A. prisoners from east Asia into Indiaat the end of the war, they classifiedthem into three categories, namely, white, grey and black. Those who did notjoin the I.N.A. were white, those whomthe British considered as misguided injoining the I.N.A. were labelled as greyand those who were aggressivelyunrepentant and would fight against theBritish again if they got a chance weremarked as ‘black’ and dismissed fromthe Indian army and their arrears of payand allowances were forfeited. Theblacks, of course, were in anoverwhelming majority, and the Britishwreaked their vengeance on thesepatriots who had caused the downfall oftheir empire in India.

Readers’ Club Bulletin August 2014 / 7

The I.N.A. felt that thiswas a punishment for theirpatriotism. The central andstate governments inindependent India foundodd jobs for I.N.A. officersand men, ranging fromjunior ministerships andambassadorships to ranksin the Provincial ArmedConstabulary. But the I.N.A.as a body was only fit for thearmy and it was not absorbedin the army.

An I.N.A. rally atBombay in 1949 urgedthe Government of Indiato accept their sacredobligation to the families and dependantsof the I.N.A. men who had laid downtheir lives in the war of liberation, andto the wounded and the disabled; therally also urged the government toprovide an opportunity to all ranks of theI.N.A. to serve free India by reabsorbingthem in their proper ranks in the armedforces of India and to pay them their justdues.

Two years later, in April 1951, at ajoint meeting of the All-India I.N.A.Inquiry and Relief Committee & theI.N.A. Advisory Committee at the

Government of India secretariat in NewDelhi, under the chairmanship of theprime minister, a memorandum onbehalf of the I.N.A. was presented to theprime minister by the I.N.A.representatives. The memorandumreferred to the fifteen thousand officersand men of the I.N.A. who had reachedIndia from east Asia by the first quarterof 1946. Their arrears of pay andallowances since the fall of Singaporein February 1942 had been forfeited bythe then British government of India.Since then about seven thousand of these

8 / vxLr 2014 ikBd eap cqysfVu

officers and men had managed to findsome employment or other. Theremaining eight thousand officers andmen were destitute and in a pitiableplight. If the absorption of the I.N.A. inindependent India’s army was stillconsidered impracticable, then thememorandum urged that as a symbolicgesture, five thousand jawans might bereinstated, obviating any structuraldifficulties that might perhaps followthe reinstatement of senior and juniorofficers. If even this was consideredimpossible, then the I.N.A. might beemployed in the border police, thearmed police, the ordinary police, intelligence, the home guards orcustoms and excise.

A melancholy but somewhatamusing sidelight on this conferencewas the presence of Colonel GulzaraSingh of the I.N.A. who was an ex-minister of the provincial governmentof Azad Hind, and one of the six trustedassociates whom Netaji took with himupto Saigon on his last known flight and“adventure into the unknown”. Onreaching India, Colonel Gulzara Singhdecided that he would only be a soldierin independent India also, and applied fora commission in the army de novo aslieutenant. He joined as a lieutenant, and

as a lieutenant in independent India’sarmy he attended the conference of theI.N.A. with the prime minister.

Two days after the conference, ministers of the Government of Indiaincluding Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, N.V.Gadgil, C.D. Deshmukh, Hare KrushnaMahatab, and R.R. Diwakar were amongthe sixty guests at a dinner at theConstitution Club, New Delhi, hosted byDr. Punjabrao Deshmukh, H.V. Kamathand Sonavane, members of parliament,to felicitate Major-General J.K.Bhonsle and others who had attended thejoint I.N.A. meeting with the primeminister. Replying to the felicitations,General Bhonsle said it was the dynamicleadership of Netaji Subhas ChandraBose that inspired the three millionIndians in east Asia to give their all forthe freedom of their motherland. TheI.N.A. problem had been hanging fire forthe previous five years; he and hiscolleagues felt that half the battle hadbeen won when they prevailed upon theprime minister to accept thechairmanship of the I.N.A. ReliefCommittee. The remaining half of thebattle could be won with the help ofthose present at the gathering, and thepress and the public. He emphasised thatthe condition of the rank and file of theI.N.A. was extremely pitiable.

Kundan lived in a small, dingy, brickhouse. Everyone thought Kundan wasvery poor.

This did not bother Kundan. He hadsaved money day after day. Now he hada tin box full of gold coins. In fact, poorKundan was a very rich man!

“If everyone thinks I am penniless,no one will rob me!” thought Kundan, gleefully.

One day, Kundan’s house caught fire.He managed to escape unhurt but couldnot drag out his precious tin box.

Undone By GreedHema Rao

“Ohhhh!” wailed Kundan, “I have losteverything!”

“Poor man!” said his neighbour. “Heonly had a house. Now he has nothing!”

“It was an ordinary brick house,”retorted another villager. “Why wail likethat?”

The village folks were reallypuzzled. Kundan had only lost a roof onhis head. He was wailing as if he had lostpots full of precious gold!

“There is more to this than whatmeets the eye!” thought Chandru, the

crafty money-lender. “I must find whatis so valuable about that old house!”

He met Kundan and whispered intohis ear, “What is inside your house? I’llrun in and get it out!”

Kundan whispered back that a boxfull of gold coins was still inside thehouse.

“If I get it out for you, what will yougive me?” whispered Chandru.

“Anything you want,” said Kundan.

“I want some of the gold,” said thecunning Chandru.

“Take it but give the rest to me,” saidKundan.

“I will give you only what I want!”insisted Chandru.

“Ohhhhhh!” wailed Kundan, loudly.“Do as you wish…Ohhhhhh!”

Chandru rushed and bravely wentinto the burning house and brought outthe tin box.

“What is in it?” asked the curiousonlookers.

“Old clothes!” said Chandru.

“Are you mad to risk your life forthat?” exclaimed a man.

“It matters to him,” said Chandru.

“What a kind-hearted man!” said oneand all. “We thought he only cared aboutmoney. But he also has a heart of gold!”

Chandru took Kundan and the box tohis house. He tied up all the coins insidean old bed sheet. He then gave Kundanthe empty box!

Kundan was very angry.

“I gave you what I wanted. That wasthe promise I made to you!” said cunningChandru.

Kundan went to the Emperor Akbar. He narrated his tale of woe. The emperordid not know what to do. Chandru hadgiven Kundan exactly what he hadpromised to do! Emperor Akbarsummoned Birbal. He told him what hadtranspired between Kundan and Chandru.

“You had a box full of gold coins,”said Birbal to Chandru. “What did youwant — the box or the coins?”

“The gold coins,” said Chandru,

“You promised to give Kundan whatyou wanted. So give back the gold coinsto him!” ordered Birbal.

So greedy Chandru lost all themoney he had cleverly taken fromKundan.

He was outwitted by someone muchmore cunning than him!

Long, long ago, before God created man.He made animals. To begin with – hemade only two big animals – an elephantand a lion and let them loose in theforest. Since the elephant and lion hadnobody else to keep them company, theybecame very good friends. They playedtogether, ate together and even bathedtogether every morning in the streamthat flowed across the middle of theforest.

As time passed, the elephant and thelion began to get bored with each other.

God also felt that the forest was toovast for just two animals, so he decidedto create some more animals for theforest. Soon, there were deer, rabbits, tigers, leopards, wolves, snakes, bears, monkeys and zebras giving company tothe elephant and the lion.

How the Lion Became King!Ratna Manucha

Now that there were so manyanimals with different thoughts and viewpoints, there were many fights and manytimes the sounds of the animals fightingwould echo throughout the forest. Awise old owl, watching from his treehollow told the animals that the time hadcome for them to choose a king.

“You must have a king”, he said.“Someone whom you look up to.Someone who will settle your quarrelsand whose word is considered law in thisforest.” All the animals nodded inagreement. After all, he wasn’t calledthe 'wise' owl for nothing! After a lot ofdiscussion, the animals decided thatsince the lion and the elephant were theoldest and biggest animals in the forest, they should be asked to decide amongstthemselves, who would be the king.

Accordingly, the elephant and thelion sat together and came to theconclusion that they would have awrestling bout and whoever won wouldbe declared the king of the forest.

Two days were given to thecontestants to prepare for the finalevent. During these two days, theelephant and the lion were not to meeteach other, so they both shook paws andwent their separate ways – to theopposite ends of the forest.

Readers’ Club Bulletin August 2014 / 19

The next morning dawned bright andclear. The lion was an early riser and hebegan to exercise so that he would be fitand strong for the competition. One –two, one – two, on and on, he wentexercising and stretching himself till hisbones ached with the strain.

At the other end of the forest, theelephant was busy too. He had stayedawake, all night long, wondering how toget enough strength for the match.

At last, he hit upon an idea.“Of course!” he thought to himself,

“why didn’t I think of it earlier? Themore I eat the more strength I’ll get towrestle with the lion!”

So, this morning, he was busydevouring all the banana trees in theforest! He ate and ate and ate, till hisstomach started swelling alarmingly.

“Now I’ll be strong enough to beatmy good friend, the lion,” thought theelephant satisfyingly and sat down to eatsome more.

The great day finally arrived and allthe animals gathered together to watchthe big event. Suddenly there was a loudroar and out from the bushes, came thelion, flexing his muscles and advancingmenacingly.

“Where’s my friend, the elephant?”he growled. There was yet no sign ofthe elephant. The animals waitedexpectantly. All of a sudden, a rustlingof trees was heard and there was theelephant, trundling along as slow as asnail and groaning with pain. The two bestfriends now stood face to face. The

grizzly bear blew the whistle and thewrestling bout had begun!

“Ready, get set and go!” cried themonkey. Just one pounce and the lionhad felled the mighty elephant with oneblow. He jumped on the elephant andwith one paw on his stomach, he wavedthe other paw triumphantly!

“I’ve won! I’ve won!” he cried amidstcheers and shouts from all the otheranimals.

The two friends shook hands and theelephant wonderingly asked the lion thesecret of his success.

“Exercise!” was the lion’s promptreply. “Oooh!” wailed the poor elephant,“I thought the more I eat, the morestrength I’ll have so these past two dayshave been spent eating and sleeping inthat order!”

So, that is how the lion was declaredthe king of the jungle. Had the mightyelephant, used his brains, then with hismix of brawn and brain, may be theelephant would have been the king!

Many years ago when there were nobuildings, malls, proper roads, electricity, mechanical devices andgadgets like mobiles, televisions, computer, radios, etc., the people had tosatisfy their needs with the use of naturalthings. A girl named Riya always thoughtabout the future generation.

One day her mother fell ill. So Riyahad to do all the housework as hermother was not able to do any work

because of her sickness. At night shewas very tired and went to sleep. Shestarted dreaming that her father is takingher to the future generation. Riya askedher father, “What are these movingthings?” Riya’s father answered, “Theseare cars”. Riya said, “Lot of smoke iscoming out from these cars and ismaking the air polluted.” Her father said“Yes, you are absolutely right. Cars makethe air polluted.”

Readers’ Club Bulletin August 2014 / 29

Riya and her father walked a longdistance and reached a factory. Herfather said, “Do you see that building?”That is factory.” Riya said, “So muchsmoke is coming out from the factory. It means that both cars and factorypollute the air.” Her father said, “Yes,you are absolutely right.”

They walked a little further and sawsome people bursting fire crackers.Riya asked, “What are these peopledoing with fire?” Her father answered,“They are bursting fire crackers.” Riyasaid, “Lot of smoke is coming out fromthese fire crackers.”

Riya was not enjoying her journey. She was surprised to see that somepeople were cutting down trees. Sheasked her father, “Why are they cuttingdown trees?” Her father answered, “Theyare cutting down trees to build houses, tables and chairs.” She said they shouldlive in huts without table and chairsbecause by cutting down trees there willbe less oxygen in the air.

She was surprised to see thatgarbage was thrown here and there. Sheasked her father, “Why is garbage thrownhere and there?” Her father answered,“People have thrown garbage here andthere as people of the new generationdo not care to maintain a cleanenvironment.” She said, “Our village isbetter than city; no one pollutes the air, cuts down trees, and throws garbage here

and there. She said that because of thepollution people are also suffering fromvarious diseases. “Please take me to myvillage otherwise I will also be inflictedwith these diseases.”

“Riya wake up, you have sleptenough,” said her mother. Riya woke upfrom her bed and said, I saw a dreamyesterday night where I had gone to seethe future generation but I realize thatmy village is better than the city of futuregeneration.”
