Following a Process that Keeps on WorkingAt the age of 20, Doron Kempel was a commander of Special Forces in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), where it was his responsibility to identify opportunities with cutting-edge technologies that could enhance the intelligence apparatus of his country. In that capacity, he repeatedly followed the same process: identify opportunities, determine if they’re feasible, assemble a team to capitalize on the opportunities, defi ne the mission and then execute on it.
Many years later, Kempel—who has dual citizenship in the United States and Israel—followed that same process to achieve success with numerous civilian endeavors. Among them, he was VP of sales and marketing at Imedia, VP and general manager at EMC, and founder and CEO of Diligent Technologies, a pioneer in enterprise data de-duplication that was acquired by IBM in 2008.
Kempel is currently applying his entrepreneurial skills as chairman and CEO of SimpliVity, which he touts as a provider of simplifi ed IT infrastructure solutions for virtualized environments. The fi rst product from SimpliVity is OmniCube. According to Kempel: “Each OmniCube system includes simplifi ed, extensive scale-out bandwidth; effi cient, duplicated and compressed replication; low-cost, easy to manage disaster recovery; and public cloud integration.”
Kempel’s advisors told him OmniCube would work, so he went out in search of venture capital. The result of that effort to date is $18 million from Accel Partners and Charles River Ventures.
Kemple declares the initial reaction to OmniCube has been enthusiastic, noting that following its offi cial introduction at VMworld in late August 2012, “We were bombarded. We had 5,000 people—I’m not exaggerating—visit our booth!” Unabashedly, he goes on to say that 1,000 people participated in 10-minute presentations (which he claims is “unheard of”), and 700 people took part in product demos. Everybody wants a demo; some people already want the product. Never at a loss for words, Kempel is “stunned” by the commotion.
OmniCube is still in the advanced stages of beta testing, which Kempel says is being done meticulously so the product will be fi nely honed by the time it goes into production, which he was hoping would be before the end of 2012.
Pricing for the new product begins at $54,990. Ever confi dent, Kempel asks: “Who wouldn’t buy it?” VR

It’s that time of year again
when I have the pleasure of
welcoming you to the combined
2013 Virtualization Review
Reader’s Choice Awards and Ultimate
Buyer’s Guide issue. This is where
you can check out the prodigious—
and rapidly growing—array of
virtualization and cloud products
that are available to meet your
specifi c needs.
When I say prodigious and
growing, I’m talking about
substantially increasing our numbers
from last year, when we included 274
products from 177 companies. This
year, in addition to adding four new
cloud categories, we dug deep and
raised the bar to 466 products and
412 companies.
In the Reader’s Choice Awards
(RCAs) voting results (see
“Methodology,” p. 6), VMware Inc.
came through with yet another strong
performance, taking home six RCAs
and one Preferred Product award
among the 16 categories. Citrix
Systems Inc. ran a strong second to
VMware, winning two RCAs and six
Preferred Product awards, while Cisco
Systems Inc. registered two RCAs
and one Preferred Product award.
Microsoft garnered fi ve Preferred
Product awards, while other Preferred
Product/Editor’s Choice award
winners include Amazon Web Services
LLC, Quest Software, Symantec Corp.
and Veeam Software.
Insofar as the Ultimate Buyer’s
Guide is concerned, as you can see
from the amount of products we
included, we spared no effort in our
pursuit of the maximum number of
products and companies that are
germane to the virtualization
universe. We hope you enjoy this
sumptuous feast and fi nd it as useful
as it is comprehensive. I welcome
your feedback with ideas on how we
can make this issue even better next
year. You can contact me at

Application VirtualizationVMware wins the Reader’s Choice Award for the third straight year in this hotly contested category that pits the market leader against Citrix and its many years of application experience baked into XenApp. Citrix does win the Preferred Product award here, while the second Preferred Product award goes to Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V), which makes a strong showing in this category for the second year in a row. Rounding things out, the Editor’s Choice award goes to Symantec Workspace Virtualization, which reduces application confl icts, testing requirements and support calls while helping IT organizations improve management and control over endpoints.

Server Virtualization Someplace very hot is likely to freeze over before anyone knocks VMware vSphere 5.0 off its well-earned—and dominant—perch in this category, from which it wins the RCA. Still, Microsoft Windows Server Hyper-V, which garnered a Preferred Product award, has transitioned from a gathering storm to a major force as it rides a powerful and still-growing wave of popularity in this most venerable of virtualization markets. The second Preferred Product award goes to Citrix XenServer, a true survivor that’s available via a free download. The free, open source Oracle VM gets the Editor’s Choice award.

MethodologyThis year’s Virtualization Review Reader’s Choice Awards survey was sent out to approximately 20,000 of our readers on Oct. 2, 2012, and they were given two weeks to vote. Job titles for the group ran the gamut from C-level executives to help desk technicians. Vendors were not allowed to vote for themselves or solicit votes. We closely examined the voting results, and threw out illegal votes that were cast in an effort to stuff the ballot box.

Teradici, best known for its PCoIP work with VMware View, takes home the second Preferred Product award for its PCoIP Zero Clients. So conversations that were once held only in IT departments are now happening across the C-suite. And rapidly deployable resources like IBM SmartCloud give decision makers plenty to brainstorm about.
CLOUDS BUILT FORRAINMAKING.
One such example is 3M. These early movers are using the cloud to analyze image design based on eye movement. Graphic artists everywhere can now upload their fi les and get instant feedback on what will most likely grab viewers’ attention. It’s a radically diff erent proposition with untold, new market potential.
RETHINK I.T.,REINVENT BUSINESS.
In the trends of an expanding digital world, we see a perfect storm of innovation forming. And for today’s industriousbusinesses, the cloud is ready to be capitalized on.ibm.com/cloudtechnology
A CHANGE IN THE ATMOSPHERE.
For a technology that’s built to be invisible, cloud computing is making sweeping changes everywhere you look. Fromthe way we work to theway we live, remoteIT services are
putting unbelievable power right at our fi ngertips. But while more and more companies are discovering the extraordinary effi ciency gains of the cloud, few are aware of how much potential is left untapped.
YESTERDAY THE BACK ROOM,TOMORROW THE BOARDROOM.
At most companies, the cloud is taken at face value—a conduit for increasing fl exibility and reducing complexity. Meanwhile, forward-looking businesses are rethinking the cloud to enable them to profi t from an explosion of new social, mobile and analytics capabilities. They’re transforming business models, disrupting industries and getting to market in no time.
In a recent study, 68% of fi rmsusing the cloud to disrupt markets expected to outperform their peers.

Virtualization Management & Optimization The RCA for this capacious category is won by VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite in a repeat of last year’s performance. The stately vCenter delivers integrated performance, capacity and confi guration management capabilities for vSphere, physical and hybrid cloud environments. Despite its prominence, however, vCenter is feeling some heat from Preferred Product winner Microsoft System Center, which has grown signifi cantly in stature during the past year. Cisco Systems wins the second Preferred Product award in this category via its Virtual Network Management Center product, while the Editor’s Choice award is bestowed upon Veeam Software in honor of its multitasking Veeam ONE for VMware and Hyper-V.

What’s New in VMware vSphere and vCenter 5.1There’s usually little enthusiasm when a software company releases a minor version update to its fl agship product, because it’s always expected that “star” features will be withheld for major version releases. This is not the case with VMware. It seems the company insists on making the point that innovation is the norm and part of its DNA, and that every version—minor or major—will be packed with important features.
VMware vSphere and vCenter 5.1 are most defi nitely jam-packed with features and innovations. Let’s explore the most important ones.
vSphere PlatformFirst up, let’s take a look at what’s new in the vSphere platform. Most notable here is the very welcome integration of VMware vShield Endpoint, which is now bundled within the hypervisor. This is a huge value-add that could offer signifi cant scalability enhancements by leveraging agentless antivirus and anti-malware, and offl oading that out of the VM and onto host-based virtual appliances. The savings here lie in fewer storage requirements and the avoidance of antivirus scan storms and bulk defi nition updates.
The features keep coming. Another popular one is Enhanced vMotion, which enables live migration of VMs between hosts without the need for shared storage. Of course, no new hypervisor update would be complete without support for the latest guest OSes, primarily from Microsoft. In this case, vSphere 5.1 extends support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.
VM EnhancementsThe VM enhancements are also numerous, most notably with the new and very cool hardware-accelerated 3D graphics support. This is a platform enhancement intended for VMware View and aimed at VMs that require heavy graphics-intensive applications leveraging vGPU technology, and offl oading specifi c processes to the hardware GPU
on the host. This effort is in collaboration with NVIDIA and only a limited number of GPU models are supported. It’s worth noting that while this feature is now available in vSphere 5.1, as of this writing VMware View can’t take advantage of it.
VM hardware also receives a boost with the new version 9, which unlocks more powerful virtual hardware capabilities such as 64 vCPU and 1TB of RAM per VM—pretty impressive for those monster workloads.
vSphere ReplicationThis is an attractive addition to vSphere 5.1 that allows host-based VM replication, a feature previously made available with VMware Site Recovery Manager 5.0, and now available at the hypervisor level for customers with Essentials Plus licensing or higher. Small businesses will fi nd this a welcome feature that saves on array- or software-based replication that they previously had to purchase. Large enterprises might fi nd value in expanding virtualization to branch offi ces with the ability to implement some form of disaster recovery.
vSphere Data ProtectionA newcomer to the vSphere 5.1 product is vSphere Data Protection. This joint collaboration with EMC is based on Avamare and provides for backup and de-duplication capabilities leveraging vSphere APIs for Data Protection. This serves as a replacement to the vSphere disaster recovery appliance, but also throws VMware into the competitive space of virtual backup and recovery solutions.
vSphere Web ClientWhile vSphere 5.1 has many new or enhanced features, if I were to rank the one that steals the spotlight, it would without a doubt be the vSphere Web Client, a framework for the future that allows administrators ready access to information, and delivers a more robust and fl exible platform for expanded development. 5 Tips for Mastering Virtualization Backup
At too many companies today, getting reliable and 100 percent recoverable virtualization backup for the entire infrastructure is more art than science. You might get a daily message saying that backups have only partially completed, but you’ve come to accept it. Or maybe you get a message saying that backups have successfully completed, but you don’t trust them. Backup and recovery should be a core function your IT department offers—and one you can perform entirely. Unfortunately, there are too many companies where this isn’t the case. Now is the time to master your virtualization backups.
To help you, I’ve compiled a list of my top fi ve tips for mastering virtualization backup.
1. Select the Right ToolSo much of your success in backup and recovery is dependent on selecting the right tool for the job. If you have physical (non-virtualized) servers in your infrastructure, you need a tool that can back them up. If you’re 100 percent virtualized, a virtualization-only backup tool might be the best answer. However, if you’re like most companies out there—which are, let’s say, 90 percent virtual and 10 percent physical—then you need a tool that’s able to back up both your physical servers and your VMs. For the sake of simplicity (and licensing costs), I strongly believe that companies shouldn’t have multiple backup tools. It just doesn’t make sense.
2. Plan to Get Your Data Off -SiteYou can’t just stop at successfully backing up your data. You need to get that data off-site. Too many virtualization-specifi c backup tools stop at the point of backing up your data and offer few options to get data off-site. Not every company has the bandwidth to perform replication. You need a controlled and automated way to move data from your backup repository to a portable device (tape or disk) for off-site storage in the event of a disaster.
3. Utilize Advanced FeaturesThe backup tool you select should offer advanced features. Examples include:
■ De-duplication and compression: Ensure that backup data doesn’t consume excessive storage.
■ Application-consistent backups: Utilize the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), and backup tools to back up your data so that application data is quiesced and has integrity.
■ Verifi cation and automated recovery testing: Ensure that VM OSes and applications will truly function, once restored, in an automated fashion.
Many of the backup tools today offer one or more of these features, but they’re executed differently. My recommendation is to ensure that
your backup tool offers all the features you can afford, and that they’re as effi cient as possible.
4. Make Sure It’s FastCompanies make claims about how fast and reliable their backup products are, but have you ever tested your backup product? How fast can it get your largest server running again if it’s lost? How fast can it restore 20 servers at once? After all, speed is always relative to your servers, storage and data.
5. Future-Proof ItWhat if you want to move vSphere VMs to Hyper-V, recover your physical servers to vSphere or recover your vSphere VMs to a public infrastructure cloud? Will your backup tool support cross-hypervisor backup and recovery? What about off-site backup to a cloud? Ensure that your backup tool is innovative and has a history of launching new features that give you the greatest fl exibility possible.
Bottom line: Look for a tool that covers all the bases for both physical server and virtual infrastructure backup, while offering numerous advanced features. VR
David Davis is the author of the best-selling VMware vSphere video training library from TrainSignal. He has written hundreds of virtualization articles on the Web, is a vExpert, VCP, VCAP-DCA and CCIE #9369 with more than 20 years of enterprise IT experience.
I strongly believe that companies shouldn’t have multiple backup tools.
FOR MIDSIZE BUSINESSES,A REDEFINING MOMENT.
In the past, midsize organizations with big ideas were constrained by limited IT resources. Not anymore. With the arrival of scalable, aff ordable cloud computing, sophisticated ideas for new products no longer languish. Personalized customer service generates incremental sales. And new, revenue-rich markets are being created every day.
It’s shaking up industries and providing new opportunities for new players, with many pioneering midsize businesses once again leading the way. Consider: 92% of midsize companies say they will pilot or adopt a cloud solution within the next 36 months.
Progressive companies like LINK Institute, the Swiss consumer research fi rm with 110 employees, are doing it right now.
REINVENT WITHOUT REINVESTING IN I.T.
LINK wanted a faster, more accurate way to measure consumer sentiment. Working with a powerful facial recognition solution created by IBM Business Partner nViso in the IBM SmartCloud, ™ LINK is now capturing respondent reactions to marketing messages in real time, via home webcams. Scores are generated every second for 7 emotions. And LINK gets its results up to 90% faster.
In the past, a data-rich solution like LINK’s would have been impractical for a midsize company. But in the cloud, traditional research is history. And a new service has transformed a business.
