Reflection In today’s Gospel reading, we see Jesus become equipped for His ministry by the Holy Spirit as He is baptized by John the Baptist. In the second reading, Peter tells an audience that after Jesus’ baptism, He “went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil.”
Living Stewardship - Pillar of Formation As baptized Catholics, we are called to preach the Word to others. We can practice the Pillar of Formation by telling our non-practicing or non-Catholic brothers and sisters of the Good News and pray for their formation. We may ask for guidance in our mission from the Holy Spirit.

Scriptural Reflec on for the Week “[Jesus] went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” (see Acts of the Apostles 10:34-38) Saint Peter’s speech in the house of Cornelius summarizes the person and mission of Jesus Christ. Peter was an eyewitness of the life, death and resurrec on of the Lord Jesus. What he saw accomplished in Christ changed his own life and he wanted to share that good news with others. We may say Peter was fully immersed, bap zed that is, into the life of the Lord Jesus. And what did Peter want others to know of the life of the Son of God? He tells us that Jesus went about doing good and healing people. And who did Jesus heal? Those oppressed by the devil, or Sin, says Peter. Let’s understand then that even though Jesus performed many miracles to heal the body, Peter found it necessary to say that Jesus came to heal the soul of sin, the work of the devil. On this Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord, we need to focus on this eyewitness account and interpreta-
on of St. Peter on the meaning of the life of Christ. Firstly, it reminds us of the true enemy of the happiness and fulfillment we want for our lives. The enemy is not pain, disability, illness or suffering. The enemy of us all is Sin which is rooted in our selfishness and that of others. Secondly, the words of Peter remind us that only Jesus overcomes or defeats this enemy. And Jesus does this by “doing good”; the ul mate good act would be Jesus’ death on the cross for us. This is the life we are immersed in at our own Bap sm. Have you been faithful to what it all should mean?

As Jesus was baptized, he saw the spirit of God descend-ing like a dove and a voice was heard, “This is my be-loved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As you bring food for the pantry or contribute to the Poor Box, you can hear these same words. Your contributions have made a great difference to many of our neighbors. Thank you so much, and may the Lord bless you.

Baptized into His Mission
Reflection by — Saverio Grosso
T his Sunday marks the transition from the Christmas season to Ordinary Time as we celebrate another high
point of the Christmas season. Before Jesus’ birth, angels an-nounced to Mary and to Joseph who Jesus would be. At His birth, the shepherds and the Magi recognize Jesus as the Messiah. The baptism of Jesus (which appears in Matthew, Mark and Luke) is another manifestation of Christ, another epiphany.
The baptisms that John did prefigured Christian Baptism. John the Baptist raised many Messianic expectations when he preached be-cause of an Old Testament prophecy in the Book of Daniel, in which the angel Gabriel revealed a kind of “timetable” for the coming of the Messi-ah. The people in Jesus’ day, knowing that the prophecy’s date had come due, were on high alert. John’s charismatic presence and his clear prophetic teaching aroused suspicion that he might be the Lord’s “Anointed.” However, John is quick to correct them and distinguishes his practice of baptism from the Baptism that the Messiah brings: “I am baptizing you with water… He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.”
Water was a long-standing element in Jewish purification ritu-als - water cleanses and purifies; it also sustains life – and Jews knew that water figured prominently in salvation history. In John’s day, going down into water and rising up out of it represented a sinner’s desire to turn from sin, be cleansed from its effects, and start fresh. So why did Jesus, who is sinless, submit himself to John's baptism at the Riv-er Jordan?
In a most dramatic way, Jesus demonstrated that He did not come only to be human like us (that was accomplished in the incarnation.) Instead, Jesus became flesh and blood so that He could step into the place of sinners and accomplish what John’s baptism only symbolized. In His humble submission, we see a foreshadowing of the "baptism" of his bloody death upon the cross. Jesus' baptism is the acceptance and the beginning of his mission as God's suffering Servant. By allowing Himself to be numbered among sinners, Jesus sub-mits Himself entirely to His Father's will.
The Holy Spirit (symbolized by Fire) was also present as God anointed Jesus for His ministry as he rose from the waters of the Jordan river. Jesus becomes the source of the Spirit for all who come to believe in Him. At His baptism the heavens were opened and the wa-ters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, signify-ing the beginning of a new creation.
At His baptism, He accepts that He is God’s son and inaugurates His mission to save us! Through baptism, Jesus makes it possible for all of us to be born again into the relationship God originally intended for man and woman. His baptism not only wipes away sin, but allows us to receive divine life in us! It is no wonder why God the Father proclaimed His delight in His Son and spoke audibly for all to hear. In submitting to God’s plan, Jesus accepts His mission to heal the world. Let us remind ourselves that we too are baptized into this same mission.
Lord Jesus, thank you for being willing to identify with my sins and failures. Help me to live each day in the newness of life you have made possible in baptism. Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit and with the fire of your love and goodness. May I always find joy and delight in seeking to please you in doing your will.

This aspect of devotion to the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary may seem a bit strange but it is surprisingly powerful. Jesus asked, “Do not give yourself to any pleasure.
Let your breakfast and your afternoon meal be bread and water [the Monday, Thursday, and Friday fasts]. You can have other foods only at your principal meal, but make them tasteless. Do not eat to please your taste but only to nourish your body..” In effect, Jesus is asking us to exchange taste for the
salvation of souls! Sometimes, the small, everyday things are the greatest tests of how much we are will-ing to sacrifice in love for others. What an opportunity but sometimes I think my dialog with Jesus is more like: Me: “Jesus, I’ll die for you!” Jesus: “Fast on bread and water until six 3 days a
week.” Me: “But Jesus, I’m hungry. but I’ll go to prison for
you!” Jesus: “No, just pray for hours instead of entertain-
ment.” Me: “But Jesus, I’m busy but I’ll do anything for you.” Jesus: “Make your meals bland for the salvation of
souls.” Me: “But Jesus . . . . I’m ITALIAN!” (I can say that
having grown up with a great Italian cook – my Mom!) Love and Grace Built in the Little Things We read in the Spiritual Diary, “During lunch, it was
very difficult to make my meal tasteless. So, I decided to eat one half and to make tasteless the other half. Our Lord sadly observed: ‘I accepted sufferings with-out a thought and I saved you from all your sins, not just from some. Do not be stingy. May our hands gath-er [souls] in unity.’” Later, we read: “A long time ago, the Lord had asked
me to abstain from food for the pleasure it provides, but to take it only for my body's nourishment. . . .the Lord Jesus assured me of His presence and said: ‘Offer this to Me. Taking your food without any taste is a sacrifice from your heart which is tasty for Me. In this way, our hands gather [souls] in unity.’” This is not weird or new but a longstanding practice
of the Saints. Saint Francis of Assisi used to put ash-es on his food as an offering for others. This takes love from the theoretical to the practical. God’s sacrifi-cial love is learned better in our bodies via experience than in our heads via knowledge. This isn’t God being weird; it is God creating an opportunity for us. Indeed, the way to our hearts is often through our stomachs!

Thank you so much, Eternal Father, for not abandoning me, Your handiwork. Thank You for not turning Your face away from me. Thank You for not making light of my desires. You are Light, and You’ve seen and forgiven my dark weaknesses. You are Life, and You’ve never believed me dead. You, Doctor, have listened to my grave illnesses of soul. You, Eternal Purity, have seen and forgiven my terrible habits. You, Infinite Love, overlook that I am finite, and You, Wisdom, haven’t held me accountable for my foolishness. For all these and countless other failings of mine, Your wisdom, kindness, mercy, and infinite goodness haven’t hated me. Instead, in Your light You’ve given me light, Lord. In your wisdom I’ve come to know the truth. In Your mercy I’ve found Your love and affection for my neighbors. What made You do this? Certainly it wasn’t my virtues. It was always your Love. Thank you.
