Why??A firsthand look inside
the Ohr Meir Orlando Tripfor 50 children with Cancer
By: Ari Rosenfeld
Incredible!! Amaz-ing!! Unforgettable!!.....
ose were the adjectives I found myself using to try & describe my experience on the Ohr Meir Foundation’s Orlando trip last week. If you’re not familiar with the work of the Ohr Meir Founda-tion well…you really should be. e organization was founded by Ari & Idy Friedman in memory of their son Meir who tragically lost his battle with cancer almost 20 years ago and is dedicated to bringing a feeling of joy and hope to the hearts of sick children by giving them a break from their rigorous treatment schedules. e beauty of Ohr Meir is that there are NO overhead or adminis-trative costs, meaning every penny goes directly to bene t the children & their families. Ohr Meir is comprised of an all volunteer sta including physicians, nurses and others - all recognizing and joining in the sel ess devotion and pur-pose of the Ohr Meir Foundation Inc. Last week I had the privilege of being one of those volunteers & as I tried to relay my experience to some family and friends; I found them strug-gling to see what exactly I so thoroughly enjoyed. You see, when I requested the time o from work I put in for vacation days- but in reality these days were anything but relaxing. As I sit here typ-ing my legs are still throbbing, my arms still sore & my body still sleep deprived; yet the sense of satisfaction & joy I feel are irreplaceable. It began with a mad rush to the airport right a er shabbos to catch the last ight out to Orlando along with several other “Ohr Meir Crew” members. We would spend that night & much of the early morning shlepping, unpacking & sorting hundreds of boxes. It was about 3am before we completed the transformation of a plain large room into “party central”. e room was bursting with characters, colors, toys, games, nosh etc….if you could think of it – the Friedman’s did, and it was in that room. Before nally heading o to bed I looked around the room…everyone was exhausted, yet smiling ear to ear….but why? Over the next four days the children were treated to the times of their lives. On Sunday morning- right o the plane (which thanks to the great counselors was a party) they were taken via coach bus (which thanks to the great counselors was a party) straight to Sea World. eir luggage?….retrieved & delivered to each of their rooms by
members of the “Ohr Meir Crew”. e tone was set, for the next four days the children’s only job would be to have as much fun as possible. Each morning following Shachris, a fresh hot breakfast was served while face painters & balloon creators were available to entertain. en it was o to the theme park of the day. Monday was the Magic Kingdom- but rst the kids were surprised with a Toys R Us shopping spree! ey arrived at the store where they were greeted by Geof-frey himself, and the excitement was tangible. ey picked what they wanted ($100 worth paid for by Ohr Meir) and then continued on their way to Disney. eir gi s?...you guessed it! ey were individually tagged, picked up & deliv-ered back to their rooms by the “Crew”. Before entering the park for their private meeting with the characters, lunch was served & each child given their very own video camera to help capture their memories. ey arrived back at the hotel to a hot dinner which was fol-lowed by a night of music, dancing & a surprise visit from Mickey & Minnie! Day three was spent at Islands of Adventures with each child receiv-ing spending money as a treat follow-ing lunch & a visit from the characters. ey returned to the hotel for a banquet din-ner that evening. Chocolate fountains, popcorn makers, hot pretzels & ice cream to decorate with the topping of their choice; all to enjoy while viewing video footage of their trip thus far. It was more than any child could hope for but not more than the Friedman’s would provide. Each child was given a large Mickey Mouse doll, Mickey Mouse linen & an extra piece of lug-gage to use to take home their loot. Day four ended the trip but not before a fun lled day at Universal Studios. Straight from the park they were taken to the airport where they received their nal surprise – a Disney album lled with pictures of themselves on the trip. e pictures their parents had been viewing online each day along with some videos to help ease their minds & allow them to appreciate the fun their children were having. With an understanding of what the families were going through based on their own experience, Ari & Idy Friedman ensure
that Ohr Meir caters to both the children & their families back home. From the brief summary of the days’ events that I just provided, you can clearly see why the children & perhaps the counselors had such a great time. What I am struggling to put my nger on, is why the “crew” all seemed to enjoy themselves so thoroughly. While each member of the crew had their own responsibility & schedule which I can’t speak for, I can give you a quick glimpse of my experience. My days entailed schlepping boxes or luggage, assisting the cook, setting up, serving & cleaning up meals; Running out to local stores to pick up anything needed and driving lunches to & from the parks. I never made it to Universal Studios & only got as far as the parking lots of Sea World & the Magic Kingdom yet I found these four plus days to be both unforgettable & loads of fun. e question I’m still trying to answer is WHY? e conclusion I nd myself arriving at is a combination of many things. Was it watching these children who don’t have much to smile about, smile so much? – De nitely! Was it seeing these kids who have less to be
thankful for than most, be more thankful than most? – Absolutely! Was it watching in awe what a family I’ve known my en-tire life has done in mem-ory of their son I knew so well – Certainly! Perhaps it was simply spending a few days in the world of Ohr Meir. Where who you are, what you look like & what background you come from, simply doesn’t matter. Where the only label on your shirt that’s
important is the one that says “Ohr Meir”. Where the only reason that you’re looking at your neighbor is to make sure that he or she is having as much fun as you are. While I can’t tell you what ex-actly makes the Ohr Meir experience so special, I can tell you that for those four days the magic in Orlando didn’t belong to Disney. For more information on the Ohr Meir Foundation please call 1-877-OHR-MEIR, email [email protected], or visit their website at www.ohrmeir.org. Mail can be sent to 3023 Avenue J. Brooklyn, NY 11210.

Now that you’ve purchased all the necessary Chanukah presents, it’s time to load the family into the van and head to Bubby’s Chanukah party. This is not always as easy as it seems. With the baby in one arm, your cell phone on your shoulder, and a large bag of presents in the other hand, you cautiously navigate the obstacle course of toys on the staircase as you make your way to the car. When you wake up the next morning with a sore neck, you will have already forgotten this seemingly innocu-ous moment of yester-day’s hectic day. This article will give you some tips to avoid the back and neck aches that are often experi-enced after schlepping a heavy load of Cha-nukah goodies. First let’s under-stand the biomechanical principle in-volved in carrying objects. Imagine a see-saw. On one end sits a three year old. Opposite him sits his 9 year old brother. The result of this is expected. The 9 year old is sitting on the fl oor and the 3 year old is high up in the air. Now the 9 year old starts moving closer to the middle of the see-saw. The closer he gets, the more bal-anced the swing becomes, until they are both fl oating in the air. The reason this happens is because the force on the see-saw is a combination of the child’s weight and his distance from the middle. The further he goes to the middle the less distance he puts be-
tween himself and the middle. This makes his weight’s effect smaller and the see-saw evens out. Now, let’s apply that concept to carrying objects. Whether carrying boxes or bags, the further away from you the object is, the more force it will have. Therefore, the most important thing to do is carry heavy objects as close to you as possible. In the case of a large box you should try to hold the bottom of the box so the weight is near your mid-section (your cent-
er-of-gravity). This will make the effect of the weight as small as pos-sible. If you hold the box lower down (i.e. by the handles) the effect of the weight will be greater and the strain on the back will be increased. Carrying the heavy item is not your
only challenge. You must also lift the item and eventually put it down, either on the fl oor or in your car. We have all heard people say “lift with your legs”. The truth is, this is excellent advice. However, it’s easier said than done! The fi rst thing to do is get as close to the object as possible. Sometimes, this means standing directly over the item you want to lift. Next, keep your back straight and bend your knees un-til you are able to comfortably reach the item. Keeping your back straight, hold the object and stand up. It is very important to keep the object in one place throughout this process. Your arms should only be carrying the
weight of the object but not actually moving. Using this technique you can have your legs do the lifting and avoid straining your back. When you go to put packages in your car, remember these principles. If you are lowering a heavy object into a trunk, bend your knees - not your back. If you are placing boxes in the back of a minivan, consider placing a knee inside the minivan to keep the box close to you as you put it down. Keep in mind that the most pre-cious package any of us carry is our children. Parents should apply these principles to lifting their children in order to avoid back pain. This is espe-cially important since mothers often spend much of their day picking-up and putting-down their children. The guidelines in this article can be very helpful in preventing the onset of back pain. However, if you already suffer from back pain, follow-ing these guidelines will likely not re-solve your issues. Consult a physical or occupational therapist to deal with your specifi c situation in a compre-hensive manner. ______________________________Robin Akselrud, MS, OTR/L is a Licensed Occupational Therapist and David Ettinger, PT, DPT is a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Each of our Jewish Holi-days comes with a special message and has a distinct way that it impacts upon
the life of every Jew. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are times of intro-spection and repentance; Sukkos and Pesach are seasons that strengthen our emunah, belief in Hashem, while Shavuos and Purim emphasize the su-premacy of Torah in every Jew’s life. The twelve New Moons of the year highlight our belief in the ability to always turn over a new leaf and also firm our conviction in the ultimate re-newal of the world with the coming of Moshiach, speedily in our days. The Seventeenth of Tammuz with the en-suing three week period capped-off by Tisha B’Av, the saddest day of the year, train us to focus on the loss of our Temple, the sorry state of our ex-
ile, and the fact that G-d too is very unhappy with the state of affairs of His Jewish children.
But, what is the special message of the Chanukah festival? In what way should it impact upon us and our chil-dren?
The Gemora, in the second perek of Masechtas Shabbos, teaches us that when the Jews vanquished the Syrian-Greeks, we dedicated the Temple and experienced the fabulous miracle of the Menorah. Still, they did not de-clare Chanukah immediately. Rather, the Sages waited until the next year and only then established the beautiful holiday of Chanukah for all time.
The obvious question is why didn’t the Sages immediately declare the festival the very same year that the miracles occurred? The Kedushas
Levi and the Sfas Emes both answer that the Chachomim, of blessed mem-ory, wanted to experience for them-selves the days of Chanukah when it came around the next year. Only in that way would they be able to divine what special powers lay lurking in the days of Chanukah. When they experi-enced Chanukah in the next year, they found that the treasure that Hashem planted in the days of Chanukah was the special power and ability to praise and thank Hashem, and therefore the Gemora concludes that they estab-lished eight days of Chanukah for Hal-lel and Hoda-ah, praise and thanksgiv-ing to Hashem.
Thus the special power of Chanu-kah is to aid us in excelling at the art of prayer. This makes Chanukah one of our most important national holi-days since the posuk teaches us that the very reason that the Jewish People was created was to praise the Lord, as it states, “Amzu yatzarti li t’hilasi y’sapeiru –I have created this nation to relate My praise.” Indeed, Chanu-kah’s lesson is so fundamental that it was already planned from the begin-ning of Creation. This is why the twenty-fifth word in the Torah is the word ohr, light, to hint to the fact that there will come a time when, on the twenty-fifth day of Kislev, there will be the great miracle of light.
The month Kislev is spelled chof-samech-lamed-vov. These letters can be rearranged to spell the two Hebrew words, ‘soch lo,’ which means a ‘total of thirty-six.’ This is very fitting since the sum total of candles that we light on Chanukah is six-six. But the words ‘soch lo’ also mean ‘to gaze to Him,’ which is also very fitting since this is the meaning of Chanukah: to focus on praising and thanking Hashem.
Furthermore, the sign of the zodiac of the month of Kislev is the kes-het, the bow. This is very appropri-ate since the rainbow is the sign that Hashem hearkened to the prayers and sacrifices of Noach and promised to never again destroy the world. Fur-thermore, the Targum Onkelos trans-lates ‘ubakashti,’ and with my bow (mentioned by Yaakov Avinu), as ‘ubiva-usi,’ with my prayer, further
proof that the bow is linked to prayer.
The Heroes of Chanukah also point to the message of prayer. How unlike-ly that the Kohanim, whose sole job was ministering to Hashem and to the spir-itual needs of our people, would all of a sudden become masters of artillery and at vanquishing generals. But the Kohein is the symbol of Divine Ser-vice, ambassador of our connectivity with Hashem. Thus it was very appro-priate that Hashem should use them as the agents of our miraculous delivery since He wanted to herald in this fes-tival the special message of servic-ing Hashem through the medium of prayer, our alternative to the Divine Service in the Temple.
In a similar vein, Rabbeinu Ephraim explains that the term ‘tzadik’ re-fers specifically to one who excels at prayer. We know the Chanukah en-emy was Yavon, the Syrian-Greeks. When we add the letter ‘tzadik’ to the beginning of the word Yavon, presto, we come up with the word Tzion, portraying vividly how the power of prayer led Zion (the Jews) to conquer their Greek enemies.
The Kitzur Shulchan Orech teaches us that eating on Chanukah is not a seudas mitzvah, a meritorious ban-quet, unless we accompany the meal with z’miros, songs to Hashem. I be-lieve this unusual requirement is for the following reason. Eating is not re-ally a fitting celebration for Chanukah since it was part of the ways, through sumptuous feasts and banquets of wine, which the Syrian-Greeks suc-ceeded in Hellenizing many Jews. However, if we synthesize the eating with songs to Hashem, then it bears the appropriate message for our Cha-nukah festivities.
As we reach the awesome day of Zos Chanukah - which is considered to be the final seal of judgment, I would like to wish all of my wonder-ful readers and their families, that we all be blessed with good health, happi-ness, and everything wonderful.
The Chanukah SpiritBy Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss
“...if we synthesize the eating with
songs to Hashem, then it bears
the appropriate message for
our Chanukah festivities.”

IN TIME FOR CHANUKAH, ORTHODOX UNION ANNOUNCES THATDECEMBER AGAIN WILL BE OU FIRE SAFETY MONTH
C hanukah candles are beau-tiful but they also present a fi re risk. In recognition that the observance of Chanu-
kah makes December a time in which Jewish homes are particularly sus-ceptible to unwanted blazes, the Or-thodox Union today announced that December once again will be OU Fire Safety Month. This year, the festival of Cha-nukah will be celebrated from Tues-day evening, December 20-Wednes-day, December 28. The initiative is the latest as-pect of the OU’s “Safe Homes, Safe Shuls, Safe Schools” program, and was instituted, according to Frank Buchweitz, OU National Director of Community Services and Special Projects, because “we want to pro-tect our families. Chanukah presents us with the opportunity to sensitize the community to dangers associated with use of fi re in many of our obser-vances.” The OU has posted six re pre-vention guides on its website, www.ou.org/chagim/chanukah/preven-
tion.htm. They include: • Chanukah Burn and Scald Prevention tips, which not only in-clude candles, but the making of latkes as well; it advises women to be particularly careful of their sleeves and hair when lighting and blessing candles; • Torah Tots/Play it Safe for Chanukah, which has a variety of safety tips, includ-ing keeping a 10 lb. ABS fi re extinguisher near the kitchen, away from the stove; • Fire Safety for Jewish Observances, which among other items advises that candles should be kept at least four feet away from curtains, draperies, blinds, kitchen cabinets and bedding; • A link to the New York City Fire Department’s fi re safety infor-mation website; • Who by Fire: Helping Burn Victims and Their Families, with a special section for Chanukah; and • Home Safety – Ten Hot Tips to Make Your Home a No Burn Zone, including developing an emergency
evacuation plan. In addition, the OU has pro-vided guidelines from Rabbi Hershel Schachter, OU Halachic Decisor, on Chanukah fi re safety. In accordance with Jewish law (halachah) Rabbi
Schachter de-clared: “If one is not go-ing to be home while the Cha-nukah candles are lit, it is bet-ter that they not be lit, but one
can light later in the evening if they will be home. There should always be someone watching or near the candles. In terms of using an electric menorah, you shouldn’t say a bracha (blessing) on it, although you are able to say a bracha on electric (incandes-cent) lights for Shabbat and Yom Tov candles. When lighting in a hotel room, one should make sure he has half an hour to let the candles burn, and then blow them out when he has to leave.” VUESTH

A VUE FROM A READER!
NEWT IS RIGHT!By Mendy Muller, Brooklyn, NY
Mr. Gingrich stated in Saturday nights GOP Debate that the Palestinians historically were an “invented” people and that the Palestinian leadership sought to destroy Israel. He is 100% accurate. In the Six-Day War, Israel captured Judea, Samaria and East Jerusalem. But they didn’t capture these territories from Yas-ser Arafat or Mahmoud Abbas. ey cap-tured them from Jordan’s King Hussein. I can’t help but wonder why all these Pales-tinians suddenly discovered their nation-aal identity a er Israel won the war. e truth is that Palestine is no more real than Shangri-La. e rst time the name was used was in 70 A.D. when the Romans committed genocide against the Jews, de-stroyed the Temple and declared the land of Israel would be no more. From then on, the Romans promised, it would be known as Palestine. e name was derived from the Philistines, a Goliathian people con-quered by the Jews centuries earlier. It was a way for the Romans to add insult to injury. ey also tried to change the name of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina, but that had even less staying power. Mark Twain visited the Holy Land in 1867, and published his impressions in Innocents Abroad. He described a deso-late country – devoid of both vegetation and human population: “….. A desolate country whose soil is rich enough, but is given over wholly to weeds… a silent mournful expanse…. a desolation…. we never saw a human being on the whole route…. hardly a tree or shrub anywhere. Even the olive tree and the cactus, those fast friends of a worthless soil, had almost deserted the country.” Palestine has never existed -- be-fore or since -- as an autonomous en-tity. It was ruled alternately by Rome, by Islamic and Christian crusaders, by the Ottoman Empire and, brie y, by the British a er World War I. e British agreed to restore at least part of the land to the Jewish people as their homeland. e vast majority of Arabs came to the area a er the early Zionist pioneers be-gan draining malaria-infested swamps and plowing the land! In doing so, these Jews created the economic opportunities and medical availabilities which attracted Arabs from both surrounding territories and far-away lands! In fact, over 90% of the Arabs migrated there within the last one hundred years. Most of the Arabs in “Palestine” were interlopers and squatters originating from Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and other lands who simply took possession of pieces of land. So much for their unfounded claims that they have been there since “time immemorial!”
ese Arabs came from disorganized col-lections of tribes with a tradition of con-stantly terrorizing each other and trying to seize land from their neighbors. Many of them were social outcasts and crimi-nals who could not nd jobs in their own countries so they searched for their luck elsewhere. Unfortunately, those Arab im-migrants imported into the Holy Land their age-old culture of terrorizing neigh-bors in order to seize land. In fact, today’s Arab “Palestinians”, let by Abbas and his PLO (sanitized to the PA, or Palestinian Authority...which is nothing more than a network of murderers masquerading as a government!) are still nothing more than street thugs, bullies and ‘Little Ah-madinejads’ found elsewhere throughout most of the Muslim world. ere is no language known as Palestinian. ere is no distinct Palestinian culture. ere has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention), Syrians, Leba-nese, Iraqis, etc. e last independent state in “Pal-estine” before modern Israel was ancient Israel. No nation, other than the ancient nation of Israel and later again in 1948 with the rebirth of the nation of Israel, has ever ruled as a sovereign national en-tity on this land. A mighty Jewish empire extended over this entire area well before the Arabs --- and their Islam --- were even born! e Jewish People have one of the most legitimate Birth Certi cates of any nations in the world. Every time there
is an archaeological dig in Israel, it does nothing but support the fact that the Jew-ish People have had a presence there for well over 3,000 years. e national coins, the pottery, the cities, the ancient Hebrew texts... all support this claim. Yes, other peoples have passed through, but there is no mistaking the fact that Jews have always had a continual presence in that land for over 3,000 years. is predates and certainly dwarfs any claims that other peoples in the regions may have. e an-cient Philistines are extinct. Many other ancient peoples are extinct. ey do not have the unbroken line to this date that the Jews have. And if you want to talk re-ligion, ne. G-d gave the Land of Israel to the Jewish People. And G-d does nothing by accident! It is important to note that there was a Jewish population in Palestine con-tinuously. Even a er the Jewish state was ended by the Romans, Jewish communi-ties continued to exist. All of the succes-sor governments tried to eliminate the Jews at one time or another, but none suc-ceeded as numerous accounts testify over the centuries. When the Zionists started the modern “return” to Eretz Yisrael in the 19th Century, they were joining Jews who never le . Keep in mind that the Arabs control 99.9 percent of the Middle East lands. Israel represents one-tenth of 1 percent of the landmass. But that’s too much for the Arabs. ey want it all. And that is ultimately what the ghting in Is-rael is about today, greed, pride, envy and covetousness. No matter how many land concessions the Israelis make, it will never be enough. What about Islam’s holy sites? ere are none in Jerusalem. Shocked? You should be. I don’t expect you will ever hear this brutal truth from anyone in the main stream media. It’s just not politi-cally correct. I know what you’re going to say: “what about the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem which represent Islam’s third most holy sites.” Not true. In fact, the Koran says noth-ing about Jerusalem. It mentions Mecca hundreds of times. It mentions Medina countless times. It never mentions Jeru-salem, with good reason. ere is no his-torical evidence to suggest Mohammed ever visited Jerusalem. Meanwhile, Jews can trace their roots in Jerusalem back to the days of Abraham. Treating a 5,000-year-old birth-right backed by overwhelming histori-cal and archaeological evidence equally with illegitimate claims, wishes and wants gives diplomacy and peacekeeping a bad name. I applaud the incredible moral courage of Newt Gingrich.

JEWISH MOTHERS KNOW A young Jewish man excitedly tells his mother he's fallen in love and that he is going to get married. He says, "Just for fun, Ma, I'm going to bring over 3 women and you try and guess which one I'm going to marry." The mother agrees. The next day, he brings three beautiful women into the house and sits them down on the couch and they chat for a while. He then says, "Okay, Ma, guess which one I'm going to marry." She immediately replies, "The one on the right." "That's amazing, Ma. You're right. How did you know?"
The Jewish mother replies, "I don't like her."

Rabbi. Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb
ExecutiveVice President,Emeritus of the
Orthodox Union
LOOKING INWARD “We are stumped,” reported Richard on behalf of the little group, who had just begun the Joseph story. “The narrative was fascinating, but we found it diffi cult to identify basic Jewish concepts in the midst of this intriguing plot.” Simon interrupted, something which was unusual for him, and reminded us of his background in the study of literature. “You know that I teach English literature for a living, and I found the storyline in the assigned reading of Parshat Vayeshev, (Genesis 37:1-40:23) to be a model for a great literary work. It had everything: sus-pense, drama, confl ict, and even romance. But it was hard for me to fi nd religious or moral messages in this text.” Even Leon, who somehow was al-ways able to see what others could not, was at a loss. “The story is great,” he said, “and I can hardly wait for next week’s as-signed readings to see how it all turns out. But I must confess that I too could not fi g-ure out the basic Jewish concepts that we were supposed to learn this week.” I empathized with the group and pointed out to them that the narrative sec-tions of the Torah often contain plots so rich and fascinating that the underlying messages are often diffi cult to ascertain. Traditional commentaries are up against the same challenge yet, somehow, are al-ways able to discern very powerful and very relevant teachings in all of the bibli-cal stories. I suggested that the class attempt a technique which I have found useful when faced with that challenge. I must confess that this technique is drawn from my background in the fi eld of psychology. “What I do,” I told Richard, Simon, and Leon, “is try to fi nd an event, a passage, or even a phrase or word which speaks to me personally. Somehow, in the interface between the text and my inner self, I fi nd a universal message. Let’s try it.” The class opened their Chumashim, and a fi ve-minute period of absolute si-lence ensued. Each member of the class was deeply engaged in both scrutinizing the text and meditating upon their own subjective experiences. As each pair of eyes was lifted from the text, I realized that the time to ask for their verbal response had been reached. I saw in each pair of eyes an illumination, as if all three students had been enlightened with some great new truth. I knew now that I would not have to coax an answer
from any of them, but I would, rather, have to deal with their competing efforts to gain my attention. Richard did not wait for me to recog-nize him, but immediately began the dis-cussion. “What struck me,” he said, “were these two verses: ‘And Israel loved Joseph above his other sons... and made for him a ketonet pasim [a coat of many colors]. And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they came to hate him and could not speak together peacefully.’ “ (Genesis 37:3-4) Richard then burst into tears. The text had touched a sore spot in his soul. In a deeply personal way, he continued to relate how his own father had favored his older brother, and how he had been struggling all of his life to impress his father and to gain his father’s approval. The class listened at-tentively to Richard’s poignant confession and allowed him to conclude: “The basic Jewish teaching is clear: a father must not favor one child over the other. The conse-quences may be dire. The Jewish people’s descent into exile traces back to the fact that Jacob favored Joseph.” I made a note to myself to inform the class at a later time that the Talmud itself (Masechet Shabbat 10b) found the same lesson in the text that had been the focus of Richard’s response. Leon then assumed the fl oor, with a similar depth of disclosure. “You know by now that I have always looked for approv-al from others. The way I act in this group is the way I act in the rest of my life. I ma-nipulate the dialogue so that I impress oth-ers. As I perused this week’s text again just now, I found myself envious ironically, of Reuben. The Bible tells us about Reu-ben’s futile attempt to save Joseph from his brothers’ hands and to return him to his father (Genesis 37:22). Reuben’s heroic at-tempt, although unsuccessful, is recorded for all time and eternity. That’s the kind of recognition that I deeply crave.” Once again, I made a note to myself. Leon had hit upon a concept not to be found in the Talmud itself, but rather in the responsa of the medieval Rabbi Solo-mon Ben Aderet, who ruled on the basis of this text that it was proper to publicize the names of those who did good works. I and the rest of the class waited for Simon’s response in suspense. What deep-ly personal emotion would he express? Af-ter all, he was the shy one in the class, the one who was most withdrawn. We were all
taken aback when he began his remarks in a confi dent voice. “There was something about the story of Judah and Tamar that transfi xed me. I couldn’t quite put my fi nger on it until we had those few moments of quiet con-templation. It was then that I realized that Tamar had the opportunity to identify her father-in-law, Judah, as the one who had impregnated her. Instead, she just points to the few objects he left with her and says, ‘Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.’ (Gen-esis 38:25) “I have gained a reputation in this group of being the one who is most shy and most sensitive. But I think we are all beginning to learn that we are all quite sensitive individuals. The basic Jewish concept that I learned from Tamar’s un-willingness to identify Judah by name is that one must be ready to allow oneself to be executed by fi re rather than put another person to shame. Embarrassing someone is in a certain sense akin to murder.” This time, I immediately shared with the class the Talmudic source for the basic Jewish concept which Simon had come up with on his own: “Class, each of you is on to some-thing. Each of you has discovered a princi-ple which is to be found in our traditional sources. Richard, what you said is to be found in the Talmud. Leon, a rabbi in the Middle Ages already thought along your lines. And Simon, here is what the Talmud says about the verse that you’ve connected with: ‘Why did not Tamar simply name Ju-dah? Said Rav Zutra the son of Tuviah in the name of Rav: to teach us that it is pref-erable that a person allow himself to be cast into a fi ery furnace than to embarrass another person in public.’” (Sotah 10b) Once again, my little class of three, with no formal Jewish education to speak of, had independently recreated three basic Jewish teachings: that parents not favor one child over another, that good deeds be publicized, and that embarrassing another is a serious crime indeed. The class left the room that evening with a sense of having accomplished at least two things: they each had listened sympathetically to another person’s shar-ing of his soul, and they had each been able to transcend the details of a fascinat-ing story and fi nd therein universal moral lessons.
