2. Summer Internship

An internship is a critical part of PGDM course and offersstudents the opportunity to get a feel of the corporateworld. Not only that, it offers an opportunity to workclosely with the management professionals and developknowledge, competencies and experience related directly withthe field that a student may choose subsequently. The companyalso gets an opportunity to look at the potential hires. Itis an ideal time for any student to convince the company thathe/she is a good fit. The students, who use the internshipexperience effectively, are hired faster and earn more thanthe others who do not. More and more employers are seekingstudents who have relevant experience and are familiar withthe work environment. Successful completion of internshipleads to new contacts, mentors, references andrecommendations. This increases the possibility of landinginto an impressive job position and hefty salary.

2.1 What is an Internship?

Internship is a temporary hands-on work experience in anorganization or company for which students can earn anacademic credit. This is an opportunity to add practical, relevant experience to the field of study

2.2 Why should you do an Internship?

“Test drive” the path you are choosing and confirm yourinterest. An internship is a good way to check out yourinterest in a possible career field. Not only will you havethe opportunity to build your knowledge base and test yourskills by doing your job, but you will have the opportunityto be exposed to the work of others within the organizationand find out about additional job possibilities.

Grow personally. The value of an internship often extendsbeyond career exploration; a good experience can have asignificant impact on your personal growth by developing your

JRE-SOM Summer Internship Handbook 2014 Page: 5 of 21

intellectual, interpersonal, and leadership qualities.

Get experience and skills and enhance your resume withcareer-related experience. Employers’ key criteria today, when interviewing potential candidates for employment isrelated work experience.

Develop future employment opportunities. The high demand forskilled employees has convinced employers of the prudence ofsponsoring internship programmes to identify, test, groom andrecruit candidates.

Gain valuable contacts and references. Networking is anessential part of the job search process and who better toask for a reference or contact than someone who knows yourworking style and habits. Getting to know people working inthe career field you are interested in is easier when you areworking beside them.

3. Objectives of Summer Internship

The objectives of the Summer Internship Programme are - To provide an opportunity to the student interns to apply

the learnt concepts in real-life situations To make them aware of the corporate culture by assigning

time-bound projects in a company To create awareness among student interns about their

strengths and weaknesses in a work environment To provide student interns a platform to take up on-the-job

training and develop a network which will be useful inenhancing their career prospects

Summer Internship can be broadly classified into threephases-

(i) Orientation in the company(ii) On job training (iii) Project/research work leading to Summer Training

During this period, thestudent intern shall understand the company, its customersand the competitors. He/she will thoroughly study thefinancial statements of the company for the past couple ofyears, understand the policies of the company, study themacro-environment in which the industry operates and preparea SWOT analysis.

The student intern may also get oriented to variousdepartments of the company and get to know the keyfunctionaries. The student interns shall meet thesefunctionaries with prior appointment and understand thevarious perspectives from them in managing their departments. This provides a unique opportunity for the interns to gaininsights into managing the departments directly from the headof those departments. The student interns shall also get toknow their company guide and other executives/supervisors whoshall be closely guiding them during the period of SummerInternship.

JRE-SOM Summer Internship Handbook 2014 Page: 7 of 21

3.2 On-the-job Training

The student interns should keep this in their mind that thefuture employers will assess them on their Summer Internshipand whether or not their temporary employer liked them willbe reflected in the pre-placement offer. At a minimum, you will get afull-time offer, which will make you more marketable tofuture employers. The summer internship should be a time tomake an investment in your future.

On-job training may stretch from the beginning to the end ofSummer Internship. During this period, the student internwould be assigned various tasks by the organizations, whichare part of the day-to-day functioning of the departmentwithin the organization. On-job training gives directexposure to execution and support functions of thedepartment. It gives a flavour of teamwork, organizationalculture, team dynamics, result orientation, organizationalpressures, complexities in achieving the desired results, etc. A student intern should take this as a learningexperience and be ambitious of achieving the desired targetsor accomplishing the required tasks, through professionalismand business acumen. On-job training provides good scope fordeveloping necessary managerial skills and positive attitude.

of a detailed Summer Training Report. Summer Training Reportcan be chosen by a student intern in the field of hisspecialization/interest. However the student has to besensitive to the placement opportunities and take up SummerTraining topic in that area. A good Summer Training Report, providing value to the corporatation may be the trigger for abetter placement opportunity.
