A FASCInAtIng worLDEverything around us is built environment. From the houses we live in to the schools we study in, to the malls and offices. From Burj Khalifa to Mumbai Sea link – everything is built environment. Even the airport is built environment and so is the cricket stadium.

The world’s population is growing at an enormous rate. During the 20th century alone, the population in the world has grown from 1.65 billion to 6 billion

To accommodate this growing population, we will have to have a robust infrastructure in place. We will need more schools, hospitals, bridges, airports, railway stations, malls and much more.

It is a fascinating, ever-growing world where –

∂ Over a 100 million people commuted from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 2016 alone

∂ We are on our way to build a structure 167-floor high (yes, that will be taller than the Burj Khalifa)

∂ We can now travel to other countries by using cross country highways

∂ We have built hotels deep in the sea

And it will only grow…

8

why build a career in built environment ?

not just brick and mortar anymore

Did you know that drones are now being used to inspect high-rise building for faults or capturing high resolution images of the roofs for research purposes? This will be an immensely useful tool going forward for engineers working on big infrastructure projects that involve high-rise structures.

While engineers have drones to their rescue, virtual reality tools are being availed by architects and designers to create buildings and products intuitively. And then there are professionals who are using new-age tools to make sustainable structures that are in harmony with nature and also won’t give way to earthquakes or hurricanes.

New technology tools like 3-D printing, Big Data, Smart Analytics and more are taking the art of building things to a whole new level.

what it means for you?

It changes the way this industry works. New technologies mean requirement of skilled professionals that not only know these technologies but also enjoy the excitement of working with these.

You will be working with the latest technology tools creating man-made marvels that will become a part of history for the coming times.

What more? You can take your pick from a number of different paths, each as exciting and unique as the next.

Did you think built environment is all about working on construction sites day in and day out? It is anything but that!

Because it is the next Big thing!

As a built environment professional you stand a chance to work in some of the most amazing projects around the world. It is a world of opportunities in a sector that is only going to grow.

9

what kind of careers await you?

You don’t have to be an engineer or an architect to be able to work in built environment. You can choose to use any of your skill to build a rewarding career in this sector

PlanIf planning is what you are good at, you can choose to be part of the team that works on the building plans. Every infrastructure project, whether it is a one-story house or a skyscraper or even a bridge needs a plan before it can start taking shape.

Build Want to build big? As a built environment professional you can be involved in huge projects that not only give you immense scope to be creative but also impact millions of lives. You can be a surveyor for Delhi Metro Rail or a construction manager for a 7-star, world-class project like the Dubai Atlantis. Exciting much?

manageIf supervision and keeping things in check are what you are good at, you could become a facilities manager. A facilities manager is not only responsible for running things smoothly in the big office spaces or malls but also has the onus to keep the building relevant and maintained for years. It is one of the most upcoming fields in built environment.

Goals/Objectives of Advising

1. To provide you with information and support that will enable you to be successful at UNLV.

2. To ensure that courses you take at UNLV (or other institutions) will be evaluated (and hopefully) accepted for credit toward your degree requirements.

3. To promote your involvement in on-campus, co-curricular experiences that may increase your satisfaction with the college experience and develop your interpersonal skills & leadership abilities.

4. To promote your involvement in off-campus, experiential learning experiences (i.e., volunteer services and internships) to help you explore and clarify your career options.

5. To help you "connect" your college experience with your plans and goals for life after college.

6. To promote your ability to think critically, solve problems, and make informed decisions about your future life plans.

7. To be a mentor to you by providing you with personal guidance, support, and advocacy.

8. To assist you in finding the campus professionals in support services who can best help you succeed academically and personally.

Advising Philosophy and Methods

Your advisor’s role: Our academic advisors will do what we can to serve as a resource, helping you make the most of your college experience and connect it with your future plans (e.g., future education, major and/or career). If you think you already know what you're going to do after graduation, our advisors can help you identify some activities and organizations for you participate in during college to develop your skills and gain experience. If you're overwhelmed by the choices about a future major, college or career, then our advisors will try to help you identify some options that would match your personal interests, values and abilities. We see advising and teaching as closely related because in the process of exploring options about your future, you will, also, be learning about yourself – gaining personal insight, refining goals, clarifying values, and developing critical-thinking and decision-making skills. Hopefully, these experiences will enable you to make decisions about your future that will improve the quality of your personal and professional life.

Your role as advisee: Your role as a student is to be diligent and proactive in exploring your educational opportunities. In order for advisors to be effective, they need your help and cooperation to assist you. For you to make wise decisions about your education and career, you must seek out information and ask for clarification. In particular, you should: (a) Meet with your advisor at least annually and keep the appointments you have scheduled. (b) Be prepared for appointments, which will require you do some research that you can discuss with the advisor. This step will help you evaluate your options and make decisions for yourself about your education and career. (c) Make your advisor aware of your interests, goals, and personal and work priorities. The more information you feel comfortable sharing about yourself, the better advisors can get to know you. We can then make you aware of opportunities specific to your interests and goals.

RICS School of Built Environment (RICS SBE), Amity University is an industry led academic institution which delivers specialized undergraduate and postgraduate programs to students aspiring to work within real estate, construction and infrastructure sector. It also serves as a hub for research and development of technical expertise in built environment.

Established in 2013, RICS SBE is supported by leading real estate, construction & infrastructure firms as well as the Ministry of Urban Development, government of India. It is located at Amity University’s Noida and Mumbai campus and has nearly 1700+ students enrolled.

our values

sector∂ produce global professionals with integrity and

competence in keeping with RICS standards

16

our rootsThe grounds to set up this institution were laid in 2011 when an RICS research demonstrated that nearly 80% shortage of skilled professionals in this sector was curbing its growth. globally, RICS accredits specialised degrees in real estate and construction offered by different universities. graduates of such accredited degrees are then eligible for the RICS chartered qualification. However in India, higher education of this kind was not available. As a result, alongside civil engineers, architects and planners, a large number of professionals from other backgrounds were being drawn into the sector and learning on the job.

Being a global professional body that offers chartered qualifications and standards for this sector, the industry called upon RICS to bridge this talent gap. And thus, RICS and Amity University came together to establish the RICS School of Built Environment (RICS SBE), Amity University in 2013.

17

RICS is a global professional body that promotes and enforces the highest professional qualifications and standards in the valuation, development and management of land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. Our name promises the consistent delivery of standards – bringing confidence to markets and effecting positive change in the built and natural environments.

Founded in London on 15 June, 1868, RICS is today a leading global professional body with over 125,000 accredited professionals served by a network of offices around the world. In 2018, its 150th year, RICS will not only celebrate past achievements but will work to promote pride in the profession, inclusion and diversity, and to inspire the next generation.
