~In the School of Mary~ PAPAL DOCUMENTS
Condensed by Deacon Bill Wagner (Document of Vat II: Constitution on the Sacred
Liturgy: Promulgated by Pope Paul VI, December 4, 1963) SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM
INTRODUCTION
Condensers note: It was deemed appropriate, even essential, to return to a most important document of the Second Vatican Council since the very life of the Church depends on it. The Liturgy is the source and summit of the life of the Church. Sacrosanctum Concilium (henceforth SC) concerns the goals of spiritual renewal and adaptation within the liturgy, the very source and summit of the entire life of the Church. St. John Paul II noted that a very close and organic bond exists between the renewal of the liturgy and the renewal of the whole life of the Church. Based on faith, conversion is an essential preparation for and a fruit of the liturgical celebration since the grace of the sacraments leads to holiness. SC sees the liturgy as a principle of a renewed commitment to evangelization. God’s life, one of love, spurs the Christian to bring that life to others. The liturgy sets the faithful afire with the love of Christ. The pastoral goal of SC is to make such adaptations as are good for the mission of the Church, ones that are principled and disciplined. This requires a careful study of the liturgical sources and must be an organic development of existing forms. All the faithful should be led to a full, conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations for through it the work of our redemption is accomplished, people are sanctified, the Church is built up, and public worship is given to God. The liturgy is “an action of Christ the priest and of his body which is the Church.” Active participation of the faithful is first and foremost the participation of faith. In it, God’s people exercise their common or baptismal priesthood and offer their spiritual sacrifice, their very selves with Christ in the Eucharist. SC states of Christ that his humanity, united with the person of the Word, was the instrument of our salvation. The sacraments are actions of Christ the high priest. Faith is the condition for receiving grace, but not its cause, for grace comes from God. For the liturgy to have its full effect, it is necessary that the faithful come to it with proper dispositions. Active participation in the liturgy does not mean that the faithful must constantly be doing something, since SC explicitly mentions reverent silence as a form of active participation. Both, Dei Verbum (Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation) and Sacrosanctum Concilium (Constitution on the Divine Liturgy), point up the importance of the Sacred Scriptures. Especially in the liturgy, does the Church unceasingly receive and offer to the faithful the bread of life from the table, both of God’s word and of Christ’s body. Deacon Bill Wagner Please Note: Condensed from The Sixteen Documents of Vatican II, Intros. by Douglas G. Bushman, S.T.L., Pauline Books & Media.
