COLLAR COMMENTARY- FR. JUSTIN

To know Jesus and to make Him known. This is our mission. Or in the words of Jesus Himself, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you al-ways, to the close of the age” (Matthew 27:19—20). This is our mission. If you had to choose between the words “maintenance” and “mission” to describe our Catholic community in Chip-pewa Falls, which word would you pick? These words of maintenance and mission are often brought in the contexts of par-ish renewal and growth. Catholic Churches, in particular, can become places of stagnation. We like what we like. Our litur-gical tradition ranks among the most beautiful parts of our faith. But Catholics can hang on to traditions (small “t” as “but we have always done it this way”. They can resemble less the places of mission, of healing, like the field hospitals Pope Francis talks about, and more like museums, or even mausoleums. Furthermore, our idea of mission can be more like the attitude of vampires. We need more people, young people, families, otherwise we will die. Like we want to suck their blood so that we can live off of them. This vampiric attitude is one of maintenance not mission. A good friend from up the road (Fr. Derek Sakowski) writes, “Most of our American Catholic institutions were built in a session of summer and autumn. Our immigrant forefathers had a tenacious Faith and didn’t hesitate to sacrifice every-thing to build up these institutions. They were serious about prayer and serious about discipleship. Their children learned the faith from their parents and practiced it in the home. There was a great boom in number of priests and religious sisters.” He continues, “The programs set up in our parishes were all about harvesting the fruits from healthy vines that were already there. The presumption was that all members were unquestionably committed to Jesus and to his Church. As long as most of them were, parishes were booming. That was a very, very long time ago. The destruction has been enormous. Over half of those vines are now dead. Only a remnant remains.” He quotes, “‘Foundations once destroyed, what can the just do?’ (Psalm 11:3) . . . REBUILD THEM” (From Fr. Sakowski’s blog: Abiding in Truth and Love, “A Time to Replant and Build”. But how? Our nagging suspicion is that we need to change a bit in order to focus more intentionally on mission. St. John Hen-ry Newman will say “to live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often”. If an organism doesn’t move and change, it dies. We also know that if an organism is susceptible to every outside influence in its environment, it won’t live very long, so we can’t willy nilly just change everything. Tossed by waves or blown over by strong winds. We build on Rock – on Christ. We build on the Rock – on Peter, like Christ Himself does. Against this Church, the gates of hell can’t prevail. In my over ten years in Chippewa, I have often been amazed at the wonderful and faithful Catholics we have in the city. So many people who love Christ and their Catholic faith, willing to serve His Church and the wider community, to know Jesus and make Him known. I have, at the same time, wondered why even though we have so many great people that we don’t seem to be thriving as much as I imagine to be possible when we are animated by the Holy Spirit. We have so many good things and good people doing great things all around us, the Spirit is really active, but why are we not exploding in a new Pentecost? What if thinking more about mission and less about maintenance would unleash these spiritual forces? Ignite the dynamite? Usher in a new time of grace and renewal? We have so many amazing resources and a great group of intentional disciples at the ready. What if we were a few key, if not bold, moves away from a second Pentecost, but this one not in Jerusalem, but in Chippewa Falls? A common analogy is what if we have everyone already on the bus, just not in the right seats? Parishes? Priests? Rectories? Staff? Ad-ministration? Schools? Evangelization? Outreach? Catechesis? Pastoral Ministry? Hospitality? We have brought in a group to help us with this thinking. They are proposing bold suggestions that we would be silly not to consider. Our time to talk about these things will be February 4, at 7pm. Join in person or virtually. We will have Evening Prayer and Benediction starting at 6:30, per our usual. Come and be part of something AMAZING. Prayer to Our Lady of the Falls We fly to you, O Lady of the Falls, Mother of this City and of the whole Church, that all our efforts would begin with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and continue with His good Help and yours. We especially entrust to you the care of the New Evangelization in Chippewa Falls, the sanctification of all its people, and the direction of all its apostolates, most especially our Catholic schools. Obtain for us this grace, for which we already express our gratitude: that this pastoral plan would find its origin in Him, through Whom all things are possible, and by Him, be brought to fruitful completion. With the intercession of St. Charles Borromeo, all our patron saints and guardian angels, and St. Joseph, patron of our Diocese and protector of the Uni-versal Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Mass/Confession Schedule Changes:

A Bit of This & That From Sr. Yvonne

JESUS TEACHES WITH AUTHORITY In the gospel today (Mark 1: 21-28) Jesus spoke words with the power to drive out unclean spirits, astonishing the people in the synagogue with his AUTHORITY. We can imagine the "Buzz" in the crowd with the people saying: "WHAT IS THIS?” When our priests or teachers speak to us about faith as if they are reciting a lesson learned by heart, we will probably pay little attention. But if they speak from their own experience, that shows that they deeply believe in what they say we are eager to lis-ten. That is the way Jesus speaks to us today with the force of his own life behind his words. There are no flip-flops and no division between his words and his actions. May our actions be in harmony with our words. Let us pray that God gives us the strength to be consistent and that Jesus helps us to imitate him according to his plan for each of us. Jesus, please help me to become who I was created to be. Thanks Jesus! FEBRUARY 1 ---THE FEAST OF ST. BRIDGET OF IRELAND (sometimes called St. Brigid of Kil-dare) Because of the pandemic, we could not cele-brate our 160th anniversary as we had planned. How-ever, with grateful hearts we thank God for the faith community of St. Bridget's. The earliest settlers were Irish and they honored St. Bridget by naming our church after her. Bridget became a nun. She founded a monastery and became abbess of the convent--the first in Ire-land. Her gifts to the world included helping lay the foundation of education for the laity through monas-tery schools which developed into universities in the Middle Ages. She gave the women of her country the opportunity to use their energies and intellect in ways previously not open to them. She was very generous in helping the poor. She was very devoted to the Sign of the Cross and so you often see a cross in her hand made of reeds. Today, parishioners and visitors come from Eau Claire, Fall Creek, Cadott, Chippewa Falls and other nearby places to worship at St. Bridget's. Let us con-tinue to pray that we can pass on our faith to many generations yet to come. When this pandemic is over, we will have a BIG celebration. May God continue to bless us. Alleluia!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK AND STAY WELL!
