4. INTRODUCTION

4.1. Identification of Specimen

The sponsor identified the specimen as four fire protection systems in a two-hour ceiling/floor.

4.2. Overview

This report details a test carried out on the above specimen. The fire test was carried out in accordance with Australian Standard AS 1530.4:2014 to measure the fire-resistance of the specimen. The specimen under test was installed into a two-hour ceiling floor system which was installed into a steel restraint frame suitable for mounting to the test apparatus.

4.3. Manufacturers & Suppliers

The laboratory was not involved in the selection of any test specimen materials for this test. The laboratory did however supply the supporting construction materials to the client.

4.4. Test Standard

The measurements leading to the results presented in this report have been undertaken in accordance with Standards which specify a method for measuring the fire resistance of building elements:

• AS 1530.4:2014 Methods for fire tests on building materials, components, and structures — Part 4: Fire-resistance tests for elements of construction.

Section 4 Floors, Roofs and Ceilings, Horizontal Separating Elements

Section 10 Service Penetrations and Control Joints

As necessary and where required, the following Standards have also been referred to:

5. DESCRIPTION OF SPECIMEN

5.1. General

The supporting construction consisted of a suspended floor/ceiling system measuring 1600 mm x 1600 mm x 500 mm overall.

All dimensions are nominal unless otherwise stated.

The floor/ceiling system started with the floor 125 mm hardwood floor joists evenly spaced in the 1600 mm opening at no more than 450 mm spacing with 19 mm yellow tongue flooring on top. Hanging from this consisted of a 2-hour plasterboard floor-ceiling system constructed to Knauf Blueprint 2017 system number KF258 with 3 layers of 16 mm Knauf Firesheild. The 16 mm Knauf Firesheild plasterboard sheets had offset joints by 400 mm on each layer. The 16 mm Firesheild was fixed to a frame of Accuceil furring channel (AFC28-36) max spacing of 450 mm. Accuceil 28 mm J-track was fixed to the surrounding concrete walls. Two AccuCeil top cross rails (ATRCR38-48) were spaced at 600 mm centers perpendicular to the furring channel, the furring channel was fixed to the top cross rail with Accuclip FC to TCR Clik Clak clips. The top cross rail had Accuclip Adj AC21 to TCR suspension clips connected to 5 mm suspension rod which was bent at the top to form a hook which was hooked onto an Accuclip suspension rod flat bracket. This bracket was fixed to the 125 mm F17 hardwood joists to complete the suspension ceiling.

The first layer of plasterboard was fixed off to the wall track around the perimeter at max 150 mm centers and to the furring channel at max 200 mm centers with Type S 6 g x 32 mm NP screws. The next layer of plasterboard was fixed with Type S 6 g x 40 mm NP screws at 150 mm centers around the perimeter and 200 mm centers on each furring channel. The third layer of plasterboard was fixed with 10 g x 38 mm course thread bugle head laminating screw at 150 mm centers around the perimeter and 200 mm centers through the centre of the ceiling. Each Layer of 16 mm Firesheild was sealed to detail figure 67 on page 275 of Knauf Blueprint technical manual with Knauf BindEx fire and acoustic sealant.

5.2. Specimen A: FyreCHOKE Retrofit Collar

Services 1 x 50 mm PVC DWV

Aperture 60 mm opening through both the plasterboard and Maxilite board.

End conditions The pipe extended 500 mm into the furnace, through the cavity and 2000 mm above the floor sheeting.

Supports Pipe was supported at 400 mm off the face of the plasterboard inside the cavity, also 500 mm and 1500 mm above the floor sheets.

Fire Stopping

The penetration was locally thickened with 60 mm Maxilite board on the bottom side of the plasterboard nominally 300 mm x 300 mm. The Maxilite board was secured into the furring channel using 3 x 100 mm x 8g plasterboard screws. The Maxilite was predrilled using a 19 mm spade bit to a depth of 30 mm to allow the plasterboard screws to fasten into the Furring channel.

The annular gap between the pipe, plasterboard and Maxilite board was filled with FyreFLEX sealant to a depth of 10 mm from either side. A 5 mm fillet of FyreFLEX sealant was applied to the perimeter of the Maxilite board and plasterboard from the bottom side.

A 50 mm FyreCHOKE collar was retrofit around the pipe on the underside of the slab, fixed in place through four pre-formed fixing tabs using 65 mm x 8g plasterboard screws.

5.3. Specimen B: FyreBOX Maxi

Aperture 360 mm x 135 mm opening through the plasterboard.

End conditions The cables extended 500 mm into the furnace, through the cavity and 500 mm above the floor sheeting.

Supports Cables were supported at 400 mm off the face of the plasterboard inside the cavity, and 400 mm above the floor sheets.

Fire Stopping

The penetration was locally thickened with 60 mm Maxilite board on the bottom side of the plasterboard, nominally 650 mm x 350 mm. The Maxilite board was secured into the furring channel using 100 mm needle point bugle head plasterboard screws. The Maxilite was predrilled using a 19 mm spade bit to a depth of 30 mm to allow the plasterboard screws to fasten into the Furring channel. A 5 mm fillet of FyreFLEX sealant was applied to the perimeter of the Maxilite board at the interface with the plasterboard. The 5 mm annular gap between the FyreBOX Maxi and Maxilite board was filled with Fyreflex sealant. The FyreBOX FyreFLANGE mounting flanges were secured to the top side of the plasterboard and bottom side of the Maxilite board using 38 mm laminating plasterboard screws installed into every second mounting hole in the supplied FyreFLANGE.

50 mm x 50 mm x 0.9 mm steel angle was fixed into the furring channel using 2 x 6g 16 mm self-tapping screws, fastened from above. The steel angle was flush with the long side of the FyreBOX maxi, and then fixed into the FyreBOX through the metal casing with 3 x 16 mm self-tapping screws installed into each side at 150 mm centres.

The supplied FyreBOX foam was neatly cut out to fit around the services and installed flush with the top of the FyreBOX only. 300 mm of TWrap was installed to the top side, secured with 3 x 4.6 mm stainless steel cable ties. The TWrap finished flush with the Maxilite and included a 50 mm overlap onto itself. The cable ties were installed nominally 50 mm from the ends of the TWrap, and one in the centre.

5.4. Specimen C: FyreBOX Mini

End conditions The cables extended 500 mm into the furnace, through the cavity and 500 mm above the floor sheeting.

Supports Cables were supported at 400 mm off the face of the plasterboard inside the cavity, and 400 mm above the floor sheets.

Fire Stopping

The penetration was locally thickened with 60 mm Maxilite board on the top side of the plasterboard nominally 300 mm x 300 mm. The Maxilite board was secured into the plasterboard using 4 x 8g 100 mm plasterboard screws. FyreFLEX sealant was used to seal the gaps between the Maxilite board, and to bed the Maxilite board onto the plasterboard. A 5 mm fillet of FyreFLEX sealant was applied to the perimeter of the Maxilite board at the plasterboard interface. The 7mm annular gap between the FyreBOX Mini and Maxilite board was filled with Fyreflex sealant. The FyreFLANGE mounting flanges were secured to the bottom side of the plasterboard and top side of the Maxilite board using 38 mm laminating plasterboard screw. Every fixing hole was used on the top side and 6 fixing holes were used on the bottom side.

The supplied FyreBOX foam was neatly cut out to fit around the services and installed flush with the top of the FyreBOX Mini. 300 mm of TWrap was installed to the top side, secured with 3 x 4.6 mm stainless steel cable ties only. The TWrap finished flush with the Maxilite and included with a 50 mm overlap onto itself. The cable ties were installed nominally 50 mm from the ends of the TWrap, and one in the centre.

5.5. Specimen D: Trafalgar FyreDAMPER ceiling box

Supports

The FyreDAMPER assembly was secured into the Top Cross Rail using 2 x 8g plasterboard screws on each side at nominal 250 mm centres. Additionally, the FyreDAMPER assembly was secured into furring channel on the perpendicular edge using 2 x 8g plasterboard screws on each side at nominal 250 mm centres.

Fire Stopping Single Trafalgar damper cell measuring 100 mm diameter. Fyreflex sealant installed to the base of the FyreDAMPER to bed it into the plasterboard and around the Trafalgar damper when installed into the Maxilite.

5.6. Orientation

The suspended floor/ceiling system was placed horizontally against the furnace chamber and subjected to fire exposure from the underside only. The suspended floor/ceiling was asymmetrical due to the ceiling being on the fire side and floorboards on the non-fire side.

5.7. Support and Restraint Conditions

The test specimen suspended floor/ceiling was supported in the test specimen frame by refractory brick material covered with a ceramic fibre blanket to create a seal for the test specimen.

5.8. Pre-Test Conditioning

The specimen was completed on 19th February 2021 and left to cure in the indoor laboratory environment until the test day.

5.9. Construction of the test specimen

The laboratory supplied and constructed the supporting construction on behalf of the client to their specifications. The client supplied and installed the test specimen into the supporting construction.

7. EQUIPMENT

7.1. Furnace

The furnace had a nominal opening of 1650 mm x 1650 mm for attachment of vertical or horizontal specimens. The furnace was lined with refractory blanket material meeting the requirements of Clause 2.1 of AS 1530.4:2014 and was heated by combustion of a mixture of LPG and air. The temperature of the furnace was controlled to vary with time, as close as possible, in accordance with the following relationship: T = 345 log10 (8t + 1) + 20 Where T = furnace temperature at time (t), in degrees centigrade t = time into the test, measured from the ignition of the furnace, in minutes

7.2. Temperature

The temperature in the furnace chamber was measured using four Type-K 3 mm diameter 310 stainless steel Mineral Insulated Metal Sheathed (MIMS) thermocouples. Each thermocouple was housed in 15NB 253MA steel support tubes, sealed at each end with refractory blanket with the measuring junction protruding into the furnace a minimum of 25 mm. The calibration reference for the thermocouples was: 28228-1N.

Specimen temperatures measured with type K thermocouples of wire diameter not exceeding 0.5 mm, with the measuring junction silver soldered to the face of a 12 mm diameter by 0.2 mm thick copper disc. Each thermocouple was covered with a 30 ± 0.5 mm x 30 ± 0.5 mm x 2.0 ± 0.5 mm thick millboard pad. The calibration reference for the thermocouples was: A30464TB

A roving thermocouple was available to measure temperatures at positions that appeared hotter than the positions monitored by fixed thermocouples. The calibration reference for the thermocouple was: 19174-2N .

The location of the thermocouples on the unexposed face of the specimen is described in Table 1 and results are in Appendix A Charts and Appendix B Tables.

7.3. Pressure

Furnace pressure was measured with a Dwyer Magnesense pressure transmitter (S/N 71640), with a probe located 100 mm away from test specimen. The calibration reference for the pressure transmitter was: APL211504.

7.4. Measurement System

The measurement system comprised a multiple-channel data-logger scanning at 1 second intervals to internal storage and logging at 1 minute intervals to an external computer. The calibration reference for the data logger was: 28228-1N.

8. DEVIATIONS FROM THE TEST STANDARD

There were no deviations from the requirements of the test Standard.

9. TERMINATION OF TEST

The test was terminated at 121 minutes by agreement with the sponsor.

10. TEST RESULTS

10.1. Laboratory Ambient Temperature at Commencement of fire test

At 10:27am on the 5th March 2021 at the commencement of the test, the indoor ambient temperature was 28°c. Over the 121 minute test duration the temperature increased to 30 °c.

10.2. Observations

Table 11 includes observations of the significant behavior of the specimen and details of the occurrence of the various performance criteria specified in AS 1530.4:2014.

Photographs of the specimen are included in Appendix D.

10.3. Furnace Temperature

Chart 1 shows the standard time-temperature curve for heating the furnace chamber along with the actual average and maximum time-temperature curves recorded during the heating period.

10.4. Furnace Severity

Chart 2 shows the furnace severity versus time during the heating period.

10.5. Furnace Pressure

Chart 3 shows the plot if the furnace pressure versus time. Furnace pressure differential at the height of the lowest penetration was determined in accordance with 10.8.2 and controlled in accordance with 2.11.3.1 of AS 1530.4:2014.

10.6. Specimen Temperature

Chart 8 shows the curve of the maximum temperature versus time associated with Specimen A.

Chart 9 shows the curve of the maximum temperature versus time associated with Specimen B.

10.7. Performance

This report details the methods of construction, the test conditions and the results obtained when the specific element of construction described herein was tested following the procedure outlined in this standard. Because of the nature of fire resistance testing and the consequent difficulty in quantifying the uncertainty of measurement of fire resistance, it is not possible to provide a stated degree of accuracy of the result.

11. FIRE-RESISTANCE LEVEL (FRL)

For the purposes of the Building Code of Australia, the specimens achieved the following FRL:

The fire-resistance level of the specimen(s) is applicable when the system(s) is exposed to fire from the same direction as tested.

The test was conducted in a ceiling/floor system with an established FRL of -/120/120. The maximum FRL of any test specimen cannot exceed the FRL achieved by the ceiling/floor system in which it was installed.

The results of these fire tests may be used to directly assess fire hazard, but it should be noted that a single test method will not provide a full assessment of fire hazard under all fire conditions.

12. FIELD OF DIRECT APPLICATION OF TEST RESULTS

The results of the fire test contained in this report are directly applicable, without reference to the Accredited Testing Laboratory, to similar constructions where one or more changes listed in Clause 10.12 of AS 1530.4:2014 have been made provided no individual component is removed or reduced.
