PRAYER AND WORSHIP COMMISSION
On Palm Sunday we recallthe humble entry intoJerusalem of Jesus, ourKing and Messiah“Hosanna! Blessed is he
who comes in the name of the Lord!” This festiveacclamation, reported by all four evangelists, is acry of blessing, a hymn of exultation: itexpresses the unanimous conviction that, inJesus, God has visited his people and thelonged-for Messiah has finally come.
Palm SundayHoly Week, which for Christians is the mostimportant week of the year, gives us theopportunity to immerse ourselves in thecentral events of the Redemption, to relivethe Paschal Mystery, the great Mystery ofFaith.
Holy Week 2022
“Christ is risen! Alleluia!”, the Church sings, rejoicing. And this festive atmosphere, thesecharacteristic sentiments of Easter areextended over 50 days. This year, the Easterseason begins on Easter Sunday, April 17,and ends on Pentecost Sunday, June 5.
Easter Season
In the evening Mass, called in Coena Domini, theChurch commemorates theinstitution of the Eucharist, the ministerial priesthood andthe new Commandment oflove that Jesus entrusted tohis disciples. Holy Thursday constitutes arenewed invitation to give thanks to God for thesupreme gift of the Eucharist, to receive withdevotion and to adore with living faith. For thisreason, the Church encourages the faithful tokeep vigil in the presence of the BlessedSacrament after the celebration of Holy Mass, recalling the sorrowful hour that Jesus spent insolitude and prayer at Gethsemane, beforebeing arrested and then sentenced to death.

Easter changes everything.Today is indeed a day forwonder, for gasping inastonishment at Jesus’ res-urrection. For all of humanhistory, death had been final.Even Jesus’ closest friendswere not expecting this inn-ovation: life after death. In response to theEaster miracle, Paul tells us to become “afresh batch of dough.” Everything, even ourvery selves, must become new. Easterchanges everything.

commemorate the Passionand death of the Lord. Everyyear, standing in silencebefore Jesus hanging on thewood of the Cross, we feelhow full of love the wordswere that he spoke on the pre-viousevening during the LastSupper. “This is my blood, of the covenant, which is poured out for many.” If Good Friday isa day full of sorrow, it is therefore at the sametime a particularly propitious day to reawakenour faith, to consolidate our hope and courageso that each one of us may carry our cross withhumility, trust and abandonment in God, certainof his support and his victory.

SUNDAY REFLECTIONS
THE MESSAGE OF CHRIST’S LOVEFrom the proclamation of the Gospel at the beginning of the liturgy, we know that todayis different, not only because we hear two Gospel passages, or because we hold palmsand move in procession. Today begins Holy Week, a time set apart, a week in which tolisten, pray, reflect, and take to heart the truth of Christ’s passion, crucifixion, death, andultimately, resurrection. It takes a week, and a lifetime, to truly hear the message ofChrist’s love. It is difficult for us to comprehend that Jesus willingly sacrificed himself,so we must hear the story again and again. Let this week be for us a new moment offaith in which we, together with the criminal who was crucified with Christ, cry out,“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
April 10th |Palm SundayIs 50:4-7; Ps 22:8-9, 17-18, 19-20, 23-24;Phil 2:6-11; Lk 22:14—23:56
SOMETHING NEW IN CHRISTJesus knew that the scribes and Pharisees were trying to trap him. They put him in whatseemed to be a no-win situation. Let the woman who was caught in adultery go, and hewould have been accused of ignoring the law. Let her be stoned, and he would fail toshow mercy toward her, contradicting his life’s message. Jesus’ response teaches threecrucial lessons: none of us is free of sin; we are not the ultimate judges of others; Jesusis the mercy of God, in whom we can always trust. In Christ, God does something new. When we give our hearts to Christ, we have the hope of new life, a life in which mercyreigns.

SUNDAY REFLECTIONS
DIFFICULTY, SURVIVAL, AND GLORYIn Revelation, John the Evangelist tells us what we can expect as followers of the risenJesus: distress, endurance, and a kingdom. Although we are only eight days into our fifty-day Easter feasting, we cannot ignore the distress weighing down our daily lives. Jesus’resurrection does not erase individual suffering, but his glorious triumph over deathcultivates endurance in our hearts. We remember that Jesus did not spare himself, andwe ask for the strength to endure as he did. Imitating Christ helps us grow as membersof God’s royal family. As beloved citizens of the Kingdom of God, we recognize ourkinship with all people. Peter demonstrates his care for others as he heals multitudes ofbroken, suffering people. In the Gospel, Thomas accepts his own spiritual healing whenJesus helps him to believe. In times of difficulty, survival, and glory, we borrow Thomas’declaration of faith: “My Lord and my God!”
April 24th | SecondSunday of Easter /Sunday of Divine MercyActs 5:12-16; Ps 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24;Rev 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19; Jn 20:19-31
EVERYTHING IS CHANGEDEaster changes everything. Having been raised from the dead, Jesus shatters thefrightful images that haunt humanity. Betrayal, torture, crucifixion, death, burial—theseterrors pale in the brilliant glory of Jesus resurrected. Today’s psalm guides ourresponse to God’s power: “it is wonderful in our eyes.” Today is indeed a day for wonder, for gasping in astonishment at Jesus’ resurrection. For all of human history, death hadbeen final. In the Acts of the Apostles, though, Peter testifies that Jesus, who waspublicly executed, was raised to life by God. John’s Gospel admits that the disciples “didnot yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” Even Jesus’ closestfriends were not expecting this innovation: life after death. In response to the Eastermiracle, Paul tells us to become “a fresh batch of dough.” Everything, even our veryselves, must become new. Easter changes everything.
