ePatCare®

ePatCare® is a unique educational software tool developed to improve the dialogue between clinicians by providinginteractive training, and to ultimately advance patient care. ePatCare® provides clinicians the opportunity to create, view, share and present their clinical patient cases within the Oncology Community. It focuses on the needs of this specific targetgroup by offering a patient case sharing function via cloud. This interactive and intuitive platform enables users to easilycreate an attractive and appealing patient case that can be presented to an audience. This is what makes this tool trulyvaluable for HCPs.The intuitive handling of the software as well as a chronological, well-structured and comprehensible presentation of patientcases facilitates discussions with other oncologists or tutorials for students. A virtual journey guides the user through thepatient's history from their presentation to investigation, diagnosis, management and outcomes, with all the patient's medicalbackground and test results located in one convenient place. ePatCare® provides you with clinical real-life cases that havebeen seen and managed by oncology specialists.

ABC has established itself as a major international breast cancerconference. Its primary aim is the development of international consensus guidelines for the management of advanced breast

cancer patients. These treatment guidelines are based on the mostup-to-date evidence and can be used and adapted to many differenthealth care settings globally. The last meeting held in November2015 brought together over 1200 participants from 84 countriesaround the world, including health professionals, patient advocatesand journalists. ABC has the ambitious goal of improving outcomesfor all patients with advanced breast cancer. We believe that healthprofessionals working closely together with patient advocates and

with the strong support of media can raise awareness about the needs and challenges faced by this traditionally underserved and forgotten group of patients. We aim to identify research priorities based on the most importantareas of unmet need, analyse and discuss available data to providethe most accurate management recommendations, but also to influence policy makers and funding bodies and ultimately improvestandards of care, survival and quality of life. Research and education, with accurate usage of available knowledge, throughoutthe world, are key to achieve these goals.

Improving and extending the livesof women and men living withadvanced breast cancer (ABC) in all countries worldwide

The ABC Global Alliance is a multi-stakeholder platformfor all those interested in collaborating

in common projects relating to advanced breast cancer (ABC).

• The 3rd edition will be held in November/December 2018

Rare cancers make up as many as one fifth of all new cancer cases. Paediatric cancers and rare haematologicneoplasms are often covered by dedicated educational

events while rare adult solid cancers are hardly grouped together as a collective group of neoplasms. This course isaimed at dealing with them on an annual basis to provide thecommunity of clinical oncologists specialising in these tumorswith a regular update of recent advances in this specific area.

The ultimate goal is to strengthen the educational coverage of agroup of cancers which may be neglected in spite of their collective incidence. This year we are amid the process of cre-ation of the new European Reference Network (ERN) includingrare adult solid cancers, with the ERN named EURACAN. Manyspeakers and moderators will come from EURACAN. The coursewill be an opportunity to consolidate the network of oncologistsworking within it or in collaboration with it.

In addition, Rare Cancers Europe, in collaboration with ESO, will organize a PilotTraining Course for Rare Cancer Patient Advocates, which will run in parallel. For information about this event, please visit http://rarecancerseurope.org

The ESO and CNIO Conference on Familial Cancer aims topresent the advances in this field from a multidisciplinarypoint of view. Due to its implications not only at individual

but also at the familial and social level, familial cancer has become an important challenge for oncologists, geneticists, molecular biologists and other professionals.. Along the lastyears, new approaches have allowed to increase our knowledgeabout the genes responsible for familial cancer as well as theirbiological functions – factors that are essential in identifying theappropriate treatment in each case. The next generation sequencing is extensively used in the search of causal mutationsbut it represents a new challenge regarding the interpretation of

variants, many of which must be classified as of unknown significance. Biannually the Conference brings together leading basic andtranslational researchers and clinicians involved in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with familial cancer. Thesemeetings help to establish connections among professionalsthat in turn promote progress in the understanding and treatment of these diseases. Besides the lectures from international experts, young scientists can present their work asshort lectures and posters. This format aims to facilitate extensive discussion of current issues and stimulate new ideas.

Breast cancer in young women is a complex disease, occurring when these women are at the peak of their reproductive years, family life and careers. Being a

somewhat rare disease the optimal management of these patients is based on scientific data derived from clinical trialsmostly conducted on older women. Many aspects of breast cancer in young women are therefore poorly understood (e.g.etiology and biology among others) and research is muchneeded in this field. In addition, young women have many yearsahead of them to suffer the long-term effects of treatment and

specific survivorship issues (fertility and job among others). Thisfourth conference is a new opportunity for the latest updates onthis field and a platform for generating future research conceptsand collaborations. It will cover epidemiology, molecular biology, genetics, pathology, surgery, radiotherapy, systemic therapy, survivorship issues in young women with breast cancer. It will also include a consensus session that will form the basisfor a consensus guidelines manuscript to be published after theConference.

Within the Eastern Europe and Balkan Region Programme, ESO is pleased to provide support forclinical institutes in the region to propose a Visiting

Professorship Meeting (VPM) and four VPM will be supported byESO per year. The selection will be made among suitable proposals on a first-come/first-served basis and further proposals will be assessed for the following year.

The Visiting Professor is a renowned expert in the clinical oncology topic and can adequately focus on the tumour typeand discipline.

The hosting clinical institute is a renowned centre of referencefor clinical oncology in the region whose medical team is

interested in attending and actively participating in an internaleducational meeting held in English. Whereas proposals by the Host Chair will be considered, theVPM is intended to span 1.5 days and the programme is discussed with the Visiting Professor. Clinical cases presented by the participants are mandatory partsof the programme.

Typically, a VPM is organised in a tumour type (for instanceprostate cancer) by a defined discipline (for instance, radiationoncology) and should be organized for 30‐50 participants. Themedical/clinical oncology team of the host institute is invited bythe Host Chair and attendance is free of charge. MEDIA ACTIVITIES

The aim of ESO’s media activities is to promote and reward intelligent and critical coverage of cancer and cultivate a

more positive but realistic image of the disease that is developed through several activities that are described herefter.

Cancer World Journalism AwardFew issues in Europe are more demanding of serious journalism than reporting on cancer. Almost one in two ofus will be diagnosed with the disease and may live with it for many years.Journalism that makes a difference should be celebrated. The Cancer World Journalism Award encouragesand rewards journalists who deliver insights into the personal and social impact of the disease, and efforts tochange policy, practice or advocacy. We are looking for journalists to submit one or more items of their work - whether in print, online, on radio, video or television - into the following categories:

• Patient and carer experience• Research, science and treatment• Policy, services and affordability • Prevention

Cancer World Journalist NetworkESO has created a Cancer World Journalist Network group on Facebook for cancer reporting journalists worldwide. Members of thegroup help, support and encourage each other to further develop their cancer reporting skills. They can also submit proposals for shortnews and opinion pieces for the Cancer World website as well as apply for a Cancer World Journalist Grant and be funded by ESO tocomplete a story on a cancer-related topic. Further information is available by contacting Corinne Hall - [email protected]

A prize of €1500 is available in each category. The journalist judged the overall winner will also be funded to attend the Award ceremony, where he/she will be presented with their award.
