Living in Sydney

Australia’s Cultural GatewayLocated on the south-east coast of Australia, Sydney is the gateway to Australia and home to over four million people. Sydney is also one of the world’s most multicultural cities, where you can experience the food, entertainment and customs of the world. It is the major point of entry for international airlines operating in Australia and offers more entertainment, shopping and sightseeing than any other Australian city.

Major Events, Markets and ShoppingSydney hosts many major cultural and sporting events, thousands of eateries and restaurants from many different cultures, excellent shopping options and an exciting and diverse nightlife. Lively weekend markets are a feature of areas such as the famous Rocks district, Paddington, Balmain and Chinatown. They provide a cheaper shopping alternative to the wide range of department stores and designer outlets.

Friendly PeopleAustralian people are typically friendly and easy to get along with. They come from culturally diverse backgrounds that range from Anglo-Saxon and European cultures to Asian, South American, African and Middle Eastern.

Australians are very accepting of the cultures of others. Indeed, Australians celebrate their differences and enjoy learning about the culture, religions and customs of visitors and their

fellow Australians. Currently over 50 per cent of Sydney residents were either born outside Australia or have at least one parent born overseas.

A Mild ClimateThere are four seasons in Sydney. Summer is from December to February, Autumn from March to May, Winter from June to August, and Spring from September to November. January and February are the hottest months in Sydney. Average temperatures in Summer range from 17 to 26 degrees and in Winter, from 8 to 16 degrees. Sydney’s winters are generally mild. There is no wet season and rainfall in Sydney is usually spread evenly through the year.

A Healthy LifestyleSydney’s warm and sunny climate is perfect for a healthy outdoor lifestyle. People enjoy a range of activities including cycling, swimming and surfing. The city centre is beside Sydney Harbour and features landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the world famous Sydney Opera House. The city is surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches, national parks and mountain ranges suitable for bushwalking, hiking and camping all year round.*The Economist’s Global Liveability Report 2010

Sydney is Australia’s largest and most dynamic city. It is an exciting and ever-changing urban centre and ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities*. Sydney is vibrant and cosmopolitan with a diverse and unique lifestyle. Importantly, Sydney is considered to be safe, clean and green.

UNSW Foundation Studies –A Rewarding Experience

Students study on the UNSW campus where they have full access to all facilities and receive the best preparation for their future undergraduate studies.

Students participate in class activities that help develop their presentation and language skills, giving them greater confidence in the use of spoken English.

Teaching follows university practice with lectures and tutorials. Tutorial classes generally have about 18 students, ensuring that each student can receive individual attention.

Students are able to consult with teachers about their studies in additional sessions outside class time. All students also have the advantage of an academic support program where each tutorial group is assigned a dedicated teacher to advise on a range of matters to assist them as a group and individually. In these discussion sessions the students are provided advice on study skills, exam preparation and academic progress, as well as university undergraduate programs.

Why is UNSW Foundation Studies so popular?

The UNSW Foundation Studies programs guarantee a place in an undergraduate degree at UNSW in Sydney for international students who meet the specified entry requirements.

Courses in the Foundation Studies curricula are specifically designed to prepare students for their chosen degree and are continually modified as new areas of study emerge. The programs are overseen by the Academic Board of UNSW.

Foundation Studies provides a safe, caring environment with friendly, supportive advisers and teachers who have many years of experience teaching international students.

Students are taught in a modern, well-equipped teaching building that includes student recreational areas and a courtyard café.

Foundation Studies has its own Residential College that offers first-class accommodation with a high level of security and care.

www.ufs.unsw.edu.au | 9

The program structure is flexible and allows students to join at different times during the year and at different academic levels.

UNSW Pathway Packages are available providing students with a seamless study pathway between the UNSW Institute of Languages (if additional English language training is required), UNSW Foundation Studies programs and UNSW undergraduate degree programs – all on a single visa.

In Australia you can have a great opportunity for the future and it is a very good place to live. I’ve learnt to be myself and adapt to another lifestyle and culture.

Our Successful Students

Our Foundation Studies students have a proven record of success. Since our first students began in 1989, at least 85% have gained entry to undergraduate programs at UNSW or other Australian universities.

UNSW Foundation Studies programs familiarise students with the local academic and social culture, and develop skills and knowledge that lead to a dedication to study and higher achievement. UNSW Foundation Studies also offers an advantage to superior students who often choose the foundation programs over completing final school qualifications in their own country, in order to gain entry to UNSW.

UNSW Foundation Studies graduates have excellent Student Progress Rates in their undergraduate programs at UNSW. Student Progress Rates are a measure of the percentage of students who pass the courses attempted in their degree. Generally our students demonstrate excellent overall academic performance when compared to other international students and local students at UNSW.

‘I chose to study here to improve my English and learn how to be independent. My classes are well organised and there is a great cultural exchange. The teachers are nice, patient and very helpful and it’s less stressful studying here.’

Outstanding Academic Achievements – UNSW University Medal WinnersOver the years, a number of UNSW Foundation Studies students have gone on to win University Medals at the University of New South Wales. At UNSW a University Medal is awarded to the highest performing student who has completed an undergraduate degree program, usually at Honours level. We are extremely proud that Foundation Studies students have won the University Medal on three separate occasions – in 2000, 2001 and 2006.

Want a Great Career?UNSW Foundation Studies gives students an edge in their undergraduate study. Many students are invited to stay on at UNSW for higher degree studies. Most students move into highly successful careers in business, government and industry in their home countries after graduation.

I chose to study here as UNSW has one of the highest engineering ranking in Australia and all that is required for you to get the best. At UNSW Foundation Studies, I have covered some of the intense subjects and increased my knowledge.

A UNSW Foundation Studies Family Tradition

My father graduated from UNSW with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, also my brother and most of my cousins studied at UNSW Foundation Studies.

Travis Loh (left) pictured with Sher Rin Loh

In 2010, Sher Rin Loh became the 6th child of the Loh family from Malaysia to attend UNSW Foundation Studies.

Sher Rin studied in the UNSW Foundation Studies Design Stream and is now studying Architecture at UNSW. “The most important things I learnt in UNSW Foundation Studies were Design and Australian history. I have to admit that the culture and lifestyle in Australia are pretty different from Malaysia and it’s beginning to influence my daily life.

I’m enjoying the multicultural society, meeting new people and being independent.”

Sher Rin was very happy during her time in the program, particularly with regard to the study environment.

“Facilities at UNSW Foundation Studies were good and the staff obliging and cheerful. My classes were great and the teachers were friendly, open-minded and helpful. I bonded well with my classmates and we even organised our own trips to Sydney Harbour and to other parts of the city.”

Sher Rin’s brother, Travis, is an alumnus of UNSW Foundation Studies. He decided to study in this program for several reasons. “My father graduated from UNSW with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, also my brother and most of my cousins studied at UNSW Foundation Studies.

www.ufs.unsw.edu.au | 13

The Foundation program has really improved and enhanced my presentation, time management and speaking skills. The teachers really encouraged me to voice my opinions and share ideas when brainstorming. Foundation Studies is really useful in cultivating the essential skills needed for further studies, life and future employment.

Corry Ng (Australia) Stream of Study: Arts | Preferred Bachelor Degree: Arts

I remembered hearing many good things, mainly how diversified the students are at UNSW Foundation Studies which increased my interest to enrol into the program. I studied in the Standard C (October program) in 2001 and then I graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Information Technology at UTS and then finished with a Masters Degree in Digital Media at UNSW. “

Travis still has fond memories of the program. “My friends who I studied with at UNSW Foundation Studies often reminisce about the ‘good old days’ and we never fail to agree that UNSW Foundation Studies was, and still is, the best moment of our stay in Sydney. I liked how the teachers were attentive to my learning needs as a student and the classroom sizes were just right (not too small or too large). UNSW Foundation Studies and university have really changed my outlook on life and have instilled in me responsibilities such as time scheduling, discipline and critical thinking, as well as giving me the freedom to socialise and have a fantastic time.”

* Performance in each course is expressed in terms of a letter grade with an associated grade point.

** Each course is allocated a number of Units of Credit (UOC), which determine its weighting in the GPA calculation.

For course descriptions and assessment, please see our website: www.ufs.unsw.edu.au/streams-of-study.html

GPA Calculation The GPA is determined by averaging the grade point multiplied by the Units of Credit (UOC) for each course. For example, suppose you gained the following final grades: Academic English B-Computing Studies A-Mathematics S B Chemistry C Biology C+then the GPA would be as follows:

Anson, from Hong Kong, who studied the UNSW Foundation Studies Commerce/Law stream speaks of his UNSW experience. “I chose to study here because UNSW is a world-renowned and internationally recognised university. Also, my sister is studying here in UNSW and recommends this university.

The most important thing I have learnt is to appreciate and respect other cultures while studying here, as well as improving my critical thinking and interpersonal skills. I really appreciate the fact that we can learn efficiently here as there are well-equipped

facilities on campus. The learning atmosphere here is fantastic since students are encouraged to develop their own ideas instead of just following tutors instructions.

In my class, there were only 15 students which allows both teaching and learning more effectively. Moreover, whenever I am confused the lecturers and tutors are always more than happy to help. I admire this very much.

A Scholarly Performance

Yiu Cheung (Anson) Chan was one of four UNSW Foundation Studies Scholarship students commencing in 2010. On completion of his Foundation program, he also won the Ross Woodham Scholarship as the outstanding student in Business

Convenience is another advantage studying here as UNSW has a great location. Accommodation, restaurants, clinics, post office etc are on or near the campus. The high accessibility to the CDB of Sydney allows us to experience the city life.

The longer I stay here, the more I learn, apart from improving my spoken English, I’ve learnt to be more independent and deal with problems on my own. I’m happy and grateful to be a student of UNSW and I’m looking forward to my second and third years here.”

Cost of UNSW Foundation Studies All students entering UNSW Foundation Studies programs pay the same fees whether they are international students, Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents.

Entry into UNSW Undergraduate Programs via Commonwealth Supported Places Students enrolled in UNSW Foundation Studies may proceed to a Commonwealth Supported place at UNSW.

The grades required for Commonwealth Supported places in undergraduate programs are determined by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) at the time of each intake, and are dependent on the availability of places and the demand for them.

In many popular programs no Commonwealth Supported places remain for Semester 2 (July) entry because of demand at Semester 1 (February/March) enrolment.

For this reason Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to enrol in a January or April UNSW Foundation Studies program which concludes in time for students to enter Semester 1 at university.

Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents

Commonwealth Supported places are in strong demand in the majority of programs and students completing UNSW Foundation Studies need to achieve high grades, equivalent to other Australian students.

English Language Grade The minimum English language requirement for obtaining a university place is grade C+. Some programs may require a higher grade (see list of program requirements in the current UNSW Foundation Studies Student Guide or on our website www.ufs.unsw.edu.au).

Applying to Other UniversitiesWe will help students apply to UNSW and other universities but it should be noted that some universities may not offer places to Australian citizens or permanent residents who have studied in foundation programs.

Cost of University Degree For Commonwealth Supported places, student contributions are paid either up-front or are deferred and paid later through the tax system.

For further details please refer to the UNSW website: www.unsw.edu.au. Click on ‘Future Students’ and follow the links.

Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia are eligible to apply for all UNSW Foundation Studies programs provided:

• they have an international educational background (most high school education outside Australia); and

• they have not completed an Australian year 12 or equivalent certificate; and

• they meet academic and English language requirements.

Recognition of UNSW Foundation Studies

In AustraliaUNSW Foundation Studies qualifications are recognised by the Group of Eight (Go8) coalition of leading Australian universities, intensive in research and comprehensive in general and professional education. The Go8 universities are:The University of New South WalesThe University of Adelaide The Australian National University The University of Melbourne Monash University The University of Queensland The University of Sydney The University of Western Australia.

Most other Australian universities also recognise the UNSW Foundation Studies qualifications.

InternationallyUNSW Foundation Studies qualifications are also recognised by many universities in the following countries as meeting, or partially meeting, their entry requirements to undergraduate programs: Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.

Note: Many universities will only consider applications on a case-by-case basis, and there may be additional requirements, quotas or specific subject requirements for certain programs.

Starting Your University Degree

University Placement by Student Advisers Towards the end of the UNSW Foundation Studies programs, the Student Advisers arrange a Faculty Information Day and seminars. At these events students gain first-hand information about the many

undergraduate programs the university offers, and are able to talk directly to the representatives of the different faculties. The Student Advisers are available to discuss preferences with students before university placement is made.

Once the final UNSW Foundation Studies results are released, the Student Advisers assist in the placement of students in the nominated undergraduate program.

Undergraduate Entry Semester 1 (February/March) and Semester 2 (July)

UNSW Foundation Studies has programs for university entry into Semester 1 (February/March) and mid-year Semester 2 (July). Main university entry is in February/March. Although many university programs offer entry in July, not all undergraduate programs are offered. See the list of programs on pages 26 – 29 for mid-year (July) entry, shown with +.

Student Support Services and Accommodation

Student SupportTo welcome all new students, Student Advisers organise an orientation program to meet teachers and to give information about studies, as well as details of student visa requirements. Tours of the UNSW campus and Sydney are also offered. Orientation provides a great opportunity for students to meet one another and make friends before formal classes begin.

Throughout a student’s program, Student Advisers organise weekly team sports and outings to places of interest in and around Sydney, as well as extended trips during the holidays.

Clubs and SocietiesOn the UNSW campus, there are over 30 sports clubs, which train and participate in competitions throughout the year. Participation in sports is a great way to meet people with the same interests and develop personal skills. Sport helps balance academic study.

There are other clubs and societies on campus including music, debating, theatre, science fiction, politics, religion, the environment and many more.

Extra TutoringThe UNSW Foundation Studies team is committed to helping all students reach their full potential and complete their program to the highest standard. As part of this commitment, we offer additional consultation sessions outside class time.

These additional sessions provide students with the opportunity to speak to their teachers about their studies. These sessions are scheduled during the year, and when examination time is approaching. Every student has the opportunity to benefit from this extra tutoring.

Online ServicesThe UNSW Foundation Studies student intranet can be accessed from anywhere in the world at any time. It provides access to a variety of services and information such as online learning, the academic calendar and timetables, student handbooks, news and information on student activities, and a secure area which allows access to assessment details and grades. The student intranet also enables students to confirm their UNSW preferences online as they move from UNSW Foundation Studies into their UNSW undergraduate degree course.

UNSW Foundation Studies has a team of Student Advisers who offer friendly support to students during their studies. Support is especially important when students first arrive in Australia and are settling in.

ESOS Framework International Students are protected by the Australian Government through legislation, the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 and the National Code 2007.

A full description of the ESOS framework can be found at the following web link: www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/ArticleDocuments/86/en-ESOSFramework.pdf.aspx

Students with School Age Dependants Prospective international students should note that that all school-age dependants who accompany them must attend school whilst in Australia. These school-age dependants will be required to pay full fees if enrolled in a government or non-government school.

Student Deferral, Suspension and Cancellation of Enrolment Students can defer commencement of their course or temporarily suspend their enrolment once they have commenced studies in certain limited compassionate and compelling circumstances.

When deferral, suspension or cancellation of enrolment is rejected, students have the right to appeal the decision. Deferral, suspension or cancellation of enrolment might affect the student visa. Students should contact Student Services to discuss their individual situation.

Please remember that all requests for deferral, suspension or cancellation of enrolment must be made in writing to Student Services.

Attendance For students on student visas, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) requires the Institution to monitor students’ attendance. Your visa is conditional on your attendance in class being no less than 80%. Any student whose attendance is less than 80% must be reported to DIAC. Students who receive a warning letter about attendance should respond to it immediately.

Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC) It is compulsory for International Students on student visas to have medical cover for the proposed duration of their Student Visa, provided through one of the approved Australian providers of the OSHC scheme. This coverage can be arranged for you on enrolment or you may organise it on your own.

To apply for entry to our programs, simply follow these steps:

1. Decide on your preferred program of study.

2. Complete the Application Form and submit it along with your supporting documents to Student Services via our website, by email: [email protected] or Fax: 61 2 9662 2651.

3. When you receive your Letter of Offer, check the details in the offer carefully and make sure you read and understand the Conditions of Enrolment applicable to your enrolment.

4. Accept the Letter of Offer by signing the Acceptance Agreement form and return it together with the applicable payment.

5. Contact the Australian Diplomatic Mission in your home country for visa requirements and to make arrangements for your travel and study in Australia.
