Waste-to-Energy FuelsConverting Waste Into Profitable And Sustainable Power

Waste-to-Energy Fuels

Gaseous fuels that would otherwise be

wasted are becoming the alternatives of

choice. Landfill, wastewater treatment

and other waste fuel source owners

are discovering they can convert these

alternative gaseous fuels into sustainable and

economical electricity - reducing their costs

and environmental footprint and selling on the

power generated to create new revenue.

As global energy solutions specialists,

Cummins Power Generation Energy Solutions

Business (ESB) is well placed to help you take

full advantage of the alternative gaseous

fuels opportunity.

Waste-to-Energy Fuels: Good For Your Bottom Line, Good For The Environment.

2

The world of power generation is changing. In the drive to meet emissions standards and maximize cost-efficiency, more and more businesses are turning to waste-to-energy fuels.

The Cummins ESB Waste-to-Energy Fuels

Marque. Look for it on all our Waste-to-Energy

Fuels content and materials.

Waste-to-energy fuels: a world of potentialToday, landfill, wastewater treatment and other

waste fuel source owners are increasingly

recognizing the value of alternative gaseous

fuels – gases, like methane, that would otherwise

be released into the atmosphere and which can

exacerbate global warming. Driving the change

are low BTU gas generator sets, which use

proven technology to convert these ‘free’ energy

sources into clean and economical electricity.

Generating power in this way brings numerous

benefits. Waste fuel source owners can use the

power for their own facilities or sell it to the utility

grid or other customers to capture new income.

And in many countries, the power can be used

to earn renewable energy certificates or ‘green’

credits that can then be sold as commodities or

used to offset emissions.

Producing Profitable And Environmentally Responsible Energy From Waste.

3

With intensifying environmental regulations and

cost pressures ahead, alternative gaseous fuels

look set to play a key part in tomorrow’s power

generation mix.

Cummins ESB – a partner with visionCummins ESB is ideally equipped to help you

capture the potential of alternative gaseous fuels.

Using the Cummins Power Generation range

of low BTU generator sets of up to 2000 kW,

we design, build and maintain power plants for

a wide range of waste-to-energy applications

worldwide.

From landfill sites in the UK to sewage treatment

facilities in North America, our expertise is proven.

But we also look forward. As part of global power

leader Cummins Power Generation, we share in

the Cummins vision of continuously developing

and pioneering low-emissions waste-to-energy

solutions that anticipate the environmental and

cost challenges of the future.

Alternative gaseous fuels contain methane, a high value energy source which can

be burned to generate power. These gases can be produced and extracted using a

variety of natural and man-made processes and sources, from purpose-built biogas

plants to solid waste landfill sites.

Cummins Power Generation low BTU

generator sets are specially equipped to burn

the methane-mix gases recovered from all of

today’s main alternative gaseous fuel sources.

4

What Are Alternative Gaseous Fuels And How Are They Sourced?

The extracted methane can then be converted

into sustainable electricity using low BTU

generator sets – helping to reduce global

warming by displacing the energy generated

using non-renewable fossil fuels.

5

Solid waste landfill Over 50% of material in the world’s landfills is

organic waste, which produces gas naturally

through anaerobic digestion. The resulting biogas

primarily consists of methane, of which it has a

relatively high content of around 50%, as well as

carbon dioxide and small amounts of oxygen,

nitrogen, ammonia and non-methane organic

compounds.

The biogas is usually retrieved by drilling wells

into the landfill before piping the gas to a central

facility. By converting methane that would

otherwise be released into the atmosphere or

burned off in a flaring process, landfill waste-

to-energy delivers considerable environmental

benefits, minimizing harmful methane emissions

and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Anaerobic digestionAnaerobic digestion that produces biogas can

occur naturally, as in landfills, or in controlled

environments such as biogas plants, which

use airtight steel tanks or covered lagoons as

anaerobic digesters.

These digesters are fed with sewage sludge,

food, agricultural or other biodegradable wastes,

which act as feed for various types of bacteria.

The resulting biogas is comparatively high in

methane and burned to generate power.

Municipal sewage plantsUntreated wastewater in municipal and industrial

treatment plants can produce biogas through

anaerobic digestion. The biogas is produced by

digesters used in the treatment process and then

captured as a fuel source. The gas recovered

from wastewater facilities typically has a high

methane content of around 65-75% but may also

contain contaminants.

Whatever your waste-to-energy goals, we

provide you with everything you need to take

full advantage of alternative gaseous fuels, from

Cummins low BTU generator set technologies to

proven expertise and support.

Optimized gas engines: our low BTU

generator set engines are specially enhanced to

operate with non-standard gas sources, ensuring

they can handle the low and varying energy

contents of alternative gaseous fuels.

Robust generator sets: we build our gas

generator sets for robust operation and high

availability. The result is maximum uptime to help

you get the best from your investment.

Low emissions technology: our low BTU

generator sets are designed to emit extremely

low levels of NOx and other pollutants, so they

comply with the most stringent local emissions

standards and give you the opportunity to claim

renewable energy certificates or ’green’ credits

where available.

Full maintenance: we offer comprehensive

maintenance support to help ensure your low BTU

generator sets stay up and running, so protecting

your operations and income.

Specialist expertise: our knowledge of

alternative gaseous fuels makes us ideally

qualified to achieve your waste-to-energy

objectives, whether they involve landfill,

wastewater or other waste fuel sources, anywhere

in the world.

6

Cummins ESB is here to help you embrace the potential of alternative gaseous

fuels. We bring our project expertise and Cummins generator sets together to

create waste-to-energy solutions that deliver maximum return on investment (ROI)

with minimal environmental impact.

Everything You Need To Convert The Potential.

Seamless build: all our generator sets

are built solely from Cummins manufactured

components to optimize performance and

maintenance support. We call this build integrity

The Power of One™.

Advanced combustion system design: this burns alternative fuels at lower temperatures

and pressures to ensure low volatile organic (VOC)

and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) outputs – NOx exhaust

emissions can be as low as 0.5g/hp-hr (250 mg/

Nm3). Complete combustion of the ultra-lean fuel-

air mixture also minimizes carbon monoxide (CO)

emissions and unburned hydrocarbons, shrinking

environmental impacts further.

7

Alternative gaseous fuels have varying energy potential and can also contain

contaminants – variables that place specific demands on gas generator engines.

Cummins low BTU generator sets are engineered to tolerate these inconsistencies,

while delivering robust and reliable performance.

Optimized For A Variety Of Fuels. Built For Maximum Uptime.

Smart PowerCommand®: our state-of-

the-art PowerCommand 3.3 system provides

advanced control and powerful, user-friendly remote

monitoring functions. Optimized electronic mapping

also allows the generator set to be pre-programed

to match the alternative gaseous fuel to be used.

Spark-ignited engines: the spark-ignited

gas engines in our low BTU generator sets offer

a high tolerance of fuel variables like methane

content and numbers, flame speed and calorific

values. Plus, they deliver proven performance

with alternative gaseous fuels that can contain

damaging elements, such as siloxanes in landfill

gas, ammonia in sewage gas and water vapor

and halogens.

Whatever the location of your waste-to-energy
