PILOT SCHEME PUTS YOUGHAL COMMUNITY BUS ON SIX-DAY WEEK

By Christy ParkerYoughal Community bus has extended its Thursday/Friday service toMonday to Saturday. The new schedule begins as a pilot service and willbe re-assessed after two months. "Thursdays & Fridays are very popularbut we think the need is there for a much broader service," saysCommunity Bus PRO John Cunningham, announcing the scheme. The bus, with wheelchair facility, operates a door-to-door service forthose over 60 or anyone who is physically or non-physically incapacitat-ed. Passengers summon the bus simply by ringing either the driver's serv-ice number or Cumann na Daoine. Operating within the three-mile townboundary, it is essentially a free service though a €2 donation per journeyis recommended and generally accepted. "But anyone declining or unableto contribute is still welcome," says Community Bus Treasurer LeslieGodfrey. Cumann na Daoine launched the service in 2009 as a hired bus under theauspices of hackney and bus operator John Long. A year later, St Mary'sSenior Citizens Group in Knockaheeny donated a bus to the group, enabling it to strive and thrive more independently. However "it costsover €7,000 to maintain the bus, exclusive of any extra costs such asemergency driver cover," says John. "We rely almost totally on fundrais-ing and donations and Youghal people have been brilliant to us, " he adds.FAS currently funds the Thursday & Friday drivers but volunteer driverswith appropriate qualifications, are always needed, particularly given thenew, extended hours. Equally volunteers are sought for the crucial role of'driver companions' to assist passengers and the smooth running of theservice. Today the community bus has over 150 registered clients, many of whomwould reside in the upper reaches of Youghal's hills and inclines. "Thevast majority use it for shopping but there are also visits to the family, doctor appointments, library service, swimming pool, beach, park, etc.,"Leslie reflects. 'Not a hackney alternative' 'One hackney operator recently criticised thebus's negative impact onthe hackney trade, partic-ularly in austere times.Leslie accepts that "someimpact was inevitable"but stresses that the serv-ice was "never intendedas a rival to anyone andwe don't want to engagein any dispute over it."She believes that mostusers would be in the lowincome bracket and usethe bus because it is eco-nomical. Leslie's point is supportedby Community Bus Vice-chair Bree Browne, a sprightly, widowed pensioner with two kneereplacements. "I live at the top of Windmill Hill," she says, "My late hus-band used to drive us, but now I couldn't afford to come down town with-out the bus. It's a huge asset to pensioners. I'd still rather be 40 and usehackneys and any other suggestion is ridiculous," she adds. Leslie is reluctant to create ripples with any other service provider but shedoes feel that most bus passengers would previously have been reliant onfamily members for transport, shopping, etc. and so the loss to the hack-ney industry would be relatively small. She further accredits "the socialaspect" as a string inducement to bus passengers who simply might oth-erwise not leave their homes much at all. Addressing the issue of verification, which has also been questioned,Leslie says "a certain degree of trust is involved" when people completethe application form detailing their credentials. "We issue membershipcards to our members, most of whom we would know anyway. We askthat the card be produced on boarding the bus and if here is doubt aboutsomeone and they don't have the card, they are not allowed on. We haverefused people to board." The new Community Bus timetable is as follows: Mon-Tuesday-Wednesday: 9.30am-2pm; Thursday: 9.30am-5pm; Friday: 10am-5pm;Saturday: 10am-2pm. Bookings/Calls on (024) 91900 (weekday workinghours) or 087-1759555. "When possible, we'd ask people to book a day ornight in advance," advises John Cunningham. The bus does not run onbank holidays.

By Christy ParkerYoughal's resistance to the proposed replacement of its ambulancewith aresponder car brought over 1,000 people onto the streets onAugust 6th. The rally, called by the Save Youghal Ambulancecommittee, convened at Dolphin's square car park at 2.30 pm.Growing as it proceeded, the protest followed the one-way systemwestwards via the back street and through Strand Street, beforeturning east at the South Abbey grotto and returning to the squareby the town centre. The marchers carried banners, flags and placards as the rallying cry'Save Youghal Ambulance' through the 30 minute parade. Lengthytraffic delays were incurred. It was the second such protest againstthe HSE plans to replace the ambulance, following a 500-strongdemonstration at Foxhole on the town perimeter a week previous. Youghal, with a town population of 7,000 in a 44,000 catchmentarea, is served during daytime and weekends by an on-duty ambu-lance, while an on-call service operates 8 pm-8 am Monday toThursday. It's respective 90-second on and seven-minute responsetimes meet Health, Information and Quality Authority. (HIQA).As is now well documented, there is deep anger and resentment inthe town against the HSE proposal to replace the ambulance withadvanced paramedic car responder from September 1st. The vehi-cle would be unable to transport patients. Objectors fear an ambulance summoned from elsewhere would notmatch HIQA's criteria and would fail to meet the 'golden hour,'timespan for hospital admission to give patients an optimum sur-vival chance. The HSE says the proposal SIPTU approval andemanates from Labour Commission recommendations to abolishon-call services nationally. For all the alleged negotiations, therehas been deep criticism of #the HSE's -and perhaps by proxySIPTU's- failure to consult with the public and its representativesprior to the proposal being leaked or, for that matter, since. United to save lives There is an immensely strong affiliation between the Youghalambulance service and the general public. Many on Saturday'smarch will have recalled January 16th 1966, when a milk lorry wasthe best transport available to bring Mr. David Pomphrett to thelocal hospital with severe burns, following a gas explosion in hishome that had already killed his brother. David later died from hisinjuries. The tragedy motivated the town to acquire its own ambu-lance within twelve months. Seldom then has an issue so angered and united the town, across allsectors. "Geographically we are quite isolated and no ambulancecan get here and then to Cork within an hour," said local GPDeirdre O'Brien in Dolphin Square. "It will certainly cost lives."Frank McLellan, 48, said the ambulance service already took anhour to reach his hinterland of Kilwatermoy and a further delay

YOUGHAL TAKES TO THE STREETS TO SAVE REGION'S AMBULANCEwould exasperate the situation. Carmel O'Halloran, a 65 year-oldwidow, demanded, "How dare they play cat and mouse with ourlives!" Disrupting her first wedding anniversary to protest,Gaelscoil teacher Julie Ni Bhuachalla, was "distraught that some-one could be left waiting over an hour for an ambulance."

Mayor Eoin Coyne pledged the town council's "full support"adding, "we will keep going for as long as it takes." Negotiations vitalRetired Youghal ambulance driver Pa Murphy, 61, described theproposal as "illogical", arguing that "response car staff are excellentbut cannot replace an ambulance if a person needs urgent trans-portation." Fellow retired paramedic Paddy Neville recalls a simi-lar threat in 1987. "I support the protests but back then we met withthe Southern Health Board and the facts and figures dissuadedthem. Now the population is even bigger." Mr Neville's testimony reflects the insistence of the area's four TDsthat the town must acquire face-to-face negotiation with the HSE tocoincide with the street campaign. This course of action has beencompromised by most government and statutory authorities onvacation to mid-August. Meanwhile, as approach-es continue to b madebehind the scenes, 'SaveYoughal Ambulance'PRO Jim Flanagan hopesthe HSE will accept a del-egation in the comingweeks. "We'd also likeclarification on SIPTU'sstance," he adds.

Minister of State at the Department of Tourism & Sport, Michael Ring,TD made the most of his official trip to Youghal on Tuesday 26th Julywith a well earned ‘paddle’ in Claycastle Beach, one of the resort townsthree blue flag beaches. The trip formed part of a visit to some of EastCork’s major tourism sites and attractions.Hosted by Youghal Chamber of Tourism & Development and TheYoughal Socio-Economic Group (YSEDG), the Minister spent almost3 hours in the town having been introduced to its natural and built her-itage by local East Cork Deputy, David Stanton along with CorkCounty and Town Cllr Barbara Murray. Following the beach trip, the delegation (which included Head of FailteIreland in the region, Fiona Buckley) took in a tour of Youghal’s his-toric quarter including the 13th century Town Walls, St. Mary’sCollegiate Church and College Gardens. A formal meeting conducted in Youghal’s Enterprise Centre followed, with the delegation raising a number of pressing issues pertinent to theMinister’s portfolio. These included funding of ‘fit-out’ costs of theiconic Clockgate building. Town Clerk Liam Ryan explained to the Minister that the Town Councilhad undertaken a feasibility study, conservation plan and produced abusiness plan on the building. Funding for the exterior and conserva-tion works was anticipated to be sourced from South & East Cork AreaDevelopment. The Town Clerk went on to explain that funding wouldnow also be required to complete phase two of Youghal’s eco-board-walk running from Claycastle to Redbarn, with phase one due for com-pletion by December 2011.The topic which drew most interest and discussion however, was therequest by the group for a ‘Youghal-specific’ marketing fund to allowThe Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group to roll-out a num-ber of its key marketing initiatives. The delegation emphasised thatdespite the town’s best efforts to develop and invest in its tourism prod-uct; its signage, streetscapes and exploit every positive development inthe town, a negative public perception still existed about the town.Other issues to be raised with the Minister included the provision ofbeach facilities, the development of the Greyhound Track and theurgent repair of the roof in St. Mary’s Collegiate Church. The Ministercommitted to assist Youghal through any means available to him, citinghis home town of Westport as being in a similar position to Youghal anumber of years ago. “Tourism is the number one priority for this Government and I amdetermined that rural tourist destinations will be promoted and devel-oped as part of my brief” said the Minister. The Minister went on topay particular praise to the Town Council for its leadership and fore-sight in it’s investment in heritage tourism amenities.“I don’t think I have ever met a group of people with such commitment, determination and passion about their town as I have here in Youghal;I am completely blown away by the town’s stunning beauty and it’sattractiveness to the visitor, both domestically and internationally”, saidthe Minister. The visit concluded with a presentation by the Town Council Mayor,Eoin Coyne, to the Minister to officially mark his visit to Youghal.

By Christy ParkerYoughal athlete Amanda Crotty is poised to become the town’s first everParalympic runner. The 26 year-old runner surpassed the 5.20 A-StandardParalympic qualification time when, running in an otherwise non-dis-abled field, she recorded5.17 minutes for the 1,500metres at the NationalChampionships in Santryon August 7th. In acquiringher A-Standard, Amandaknocked 13 seconds off herpersonal bestAmanda, who has beenvisually impaired frombirth, is the only female -and one of only three intotal- amongst Ireland’strack and field considera-tions for the 2012 games. She is now considered cer-tain to represent her coun-try in London. As a visual-ly impaired runner, shecompetes whilst tethered toa guide, who must alwaysremain behind the athlete. The youngest of three girlsand one boy, Amanda tookup athletics aged 10. Her sparkling career has brought honours galore. Inher earlier years she “did everything,” as she recalls and her wide-rang-ing abilities brought her county and Munster honours in shot put, discusand All-Ireland cross country. In 2001 she took bronze in the Blind SportsEuropean Athletics Championship Penthatlon (100 metres, 800 metres, long jump, shot put and discus). In 2007 she was named Ireland’s Blind Sports Athlete of the Year, wininggold in the 800m and 1,500m at the May Games International in Dublin,

before taking 1,500m gold in the 4th International Athletics Meeting forthe Disabled in Tunisia. Articulate and cheerful as she is determined, the athlete became an Irishinternational in August 2010 and helped Ireland to bronze in the DutchOpen Championships last April. On August 19th she will represent hercountry in the Czech Open Championships in Prague. Amanda, who hopes eventually to become a physical therapist, uses spe-cial software to read books on computer and to surf the internet. She hasdescribed her school life as having been, “tough at times as my sightdepreciated. I still did sports, including hurling and football, but athleticswas my favourite." The Youghal star trains almost daily, dividing her regime between CorkInstitute of Technology’s track, UCC’s sports field or at the YoughalAthletic Club facility. She derives inspiration from Catherina McKiernan, whose tenacity she greatly admires. “Catherina finished fourth manytimes but never gave up trying to improve and got there. She sets a greatexample,” believes Amanda.New coachAmanda associates her current success with acquiring a new coach lastFebruary. Peter Maher, Irish born but a former Canadian Olympicmarathon runner, changed her training practice to enhance her strength bylonger runs, but also altered her mind-set. “He kept insisting I had theability but that had to believe,” says Amanda. “Then suddenly it all cametogether for me.”Still on a high a week later, Santry brought a joyful day that will foreverbe etched in her memory. “My mum was there and there were so manyhugs and congratulations, it was wonderful” she recalls. Being essential-ly a mainstream athletic event she was “absolutely delighted” when con-gratulations poured in from luminaries like Togher and internationallysuccessful walker Rob Heffernan and his similarly esteemed wife Marian,a 400m runner. Meanwhile in a middle distance Paralympic discipline “dominated byRussians,” Amanda “needs to be doing around 4.57 for medals,” whileone Russian has clocked 4.40. “Peter says I can do 4.50 so who’s to doubthim?!”she smiles. Who doubts Amanda either?

By Christy Parker Following a series of street protests and subtle political diplomacy, theHSE has agreed to meet a delegation from the Save Youghal Ambulancegroup to discuss the proposed replace of the with town's ambulance serv-ice with a responder car. A time and location has yet to be decided for sucha meeting, though it can be assumed that it will occur outside Youghal. As has been well documented, the development follows one public meet-ing (attendance circa 500) and two public demonstrations/marches atFoxhole and the town centre (estimated attendances 500 and 1,000approximately). The fact that the protests were well organised, orderlyand of minimum inconvenience to traffic, etc., was probably helpful too. Objectors say lives will be lost if the town's 8,000 population -in a catch-ment area of 44,000- is replaced by a paramedic car that cannot transportpatients to hospital. They further argue that it would contravene HIQArecommendations on response times. The proposed ambulance replacement, which was widely anticipated tobe been implemented from September 1st, is now on hold, pending on-going negotiations. The HSE remain also in consultation with SIPTU onthe proposal, which has echoes in alterations to national as well as localwork practices. Indeed, the union have yet to ballot on the wider propos-al. Fine Gael Cork East TD David Stanton says all four constituency TDshave worked towards attaining direct contact with the HSE by which toair their concerns. "Face to face talks are crucial so all sides can presenttheir arguments. There are a lot of issues involved, including the unionnegotiations," he says. "It is possible that several rounds of consultationmay be needed before the issue is settled. But as of now no final decisionshave been made and it's a good time for the people of Youghal to meetwith the HSE. My offices are working on facilitating that meeting." Save Youghal Ambulance PRO Jim Flanagan says the group are in theprocess of selecting a suitable delegation to meet with the HSE. "We'dalso like detailed clarity on SIPTU's stance," he adds.

By Christy ParkerA public meeting to discuss Cork County Council's decision to grant sludgetreatment Eras Eco Ltd. permission to facilitate the processing of hazardouswaste will be held in Youghal on Wednesday August 17th. Despite publicnotices being distributed, the organisers of the meeting say they wouldrather refrain from commenting to the press until after the gathering. Barproprietor Michael Farrell says he is not personally involved in organisingthe meeting. Eras Eco Ltd acquired permission for the €10m upgrade oftheir facility at Foxhole, last June. That decision is currently being appealedto An Bord Pleanála by Youghal Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.Meanwhile opposition has been gathering momentum in the town in recentweeks, with petitions running in several retail premises. The plant, on a 3.5 acre site lies adjacent to a business park, and within halfa mile of the River Blackwater and a proposed marina development site.Local artist and businessman Will McGoldrick describes the planning per-mission as "ludicrous" and "totally at odds with the town as a beach andtourist resort." Eras Eco is presently licenced to process non-hazardouswaste and industrial sludge from waste water treatment plants. The compa-ny employs six full-time and four part/time staff and claims the expandedoperation will create ten further jobs. The upgrade would permit 'the construction of above ground aerobicdigester tanks for the treatment of sludge', while the production of methanegas would 'generate electricity for use on site. The company hopes to treata maximum of 95,000 tonnes of waste annually, a reduction of 15,000tonnes on the present allowance. No odours; A spokesman for Eras Eco has denied the expansion will impactnegatively, arguing that 'advanced oxidation technology' will provide 100%waste destruction and convert it into clean, water without generating odoursor harmful emissions. He claims residue will be fed into the sewer systemand then through the council's impending new waste water treatment facil-ity. Youghal Town and County Councillor Barbara Murray says the expansionwill compromise Youghal's image as "a family-orientated, holiday resort."She says the propensity exists for sludge to be treated at source and "thereis no need whatsoever to export it to Youghal, which is not industrialised." Missed; The planning application, for which permission was granted lastJune, was lodged over Christmas 2010. It seems to have eluded the noticeof most people, except the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, despitereports in the Youghal News, Youghalonline.com, the Irish Examiner andthe Dungarvan Observer. The chamber alone lodged an objection, whileYoughal Town Council, being a subsidiary of Cork County Council, werenot in a position to do so. Indeed, most councillors seem also to have beenunaware of the application prior to permission being granted. Should Bord Pleanála uphold the county council's decision, objectors willnote that that a new public consultation process will be initiated if and whenthe plant applies for an EPA licence to commence operations. "That processis not associated with the planning or appeals procedure but operates in sim-ilar fashion in that fresh or renewed submissions will be invited," confirmedan EPA spokeswoman. Meeting takes place in Farrell's bar, SummerfieldCross, on Wednesday at 7.30 pm.

CHILDREN SURE TO 'BEE HAPPY' AT YOUGHAL'S NEWEST MONTESSORI SCHOOL

By Christy ParkerYoughal's newest Montessori school will open in the coming weeks. BeeHappy, at the converted former Yew Tree bar, Tallow Street, was official-ly opened on Sunday by TV3 news and sports commentator TrevorWelch, whose sister Sharon is the teacher and talent behind the venture. Sharon, from Cork city, has been living in Youghal since 2000. Her newbusiness brings the culmination of a dream while reflecting on a wonder-ful empathy with children and an insightful appreciation of the charmingworld of childhood. Now 42, her journey to this juncture has been cir-cuitous but perhaps inevitable. A travel lover, At 20 Sharon moved to Athens, taking a variety of jobsfrom bartender to tour guide, shop assistant and child minder across sevenyears. Three subsequent years in Jersey, Channel Islands, provided simi-lar incursions. Returning to Ireland in 2000, she obtained a degree in social science anda qualification in youth and community work. Her three year studiesbrought work placements in Youghal Youthreach and project work withboth Faranree Community Development and Ballyphehane YouthDevelopment (over 7's). She later worked on personal development pro-grammes for young people, including the Garda Diversion programme, through Ogra Corcai. PreschoolPart of a large family and with young relatives, Sharon's lifelong regardfor children's formative preschool years sparked a career change in 2008.She enrolled in a Cork Montessori course under the auspices of St.Nicholas College, Dublin, emerging with a diploma to work with 2½ to 6year-olds. She then taught at Midleton's Montessori school, BrambleCottage, which she found "extremely enjoyable and rewarding." BrambleCottage closed (since re-opened) in 2010 but "with the help of the CorkChild Care Committee, I decided to open my own school," she smiles.Vocation discovered, Tallow Street beckoned. An innate sensitivity affords Sharon an invaluable ability to view theworld from a child's perspective. Deeply caring and possessed of a high-ly playful sense of humour, she and Montessori were destined to merge. The double act can only bring benefit to her adopted town. Crucial yearsThe Montessori methodology specialises in working with children on aone-to-one basis, "allowing each child to learn at their own pace,"explains Sharon. "There is a strong emphasis on social skills and a holis-tic curriculum that helps children o develop socially, intellectually, emo-tionally and physically." She believes this rounded approach has relevance far beyond childhood."Any child psychologist -even common sense- will tell you that the firstfive years are a person's building blocks for life," she explains. "They arehighly impressionable, formative years that remain in the subconscious.Other factors will intrude throughout life but these years set the template." Montessori magicBee Happy has been renovated to match the needs. Pausing during thefinal preparations, Sharon demystifies some of the paraphernalia on thepremises. A 'practical life' section features variously sized plastic jars that"open and close to promote independence, confidence concentration andco-ordination, through transference of contents." A small mirror, when polished, strengthens writing muscles; little tea setsencourage social skills, tactile senses benefit from matching various clothmaterials with eyes closed, sand-surfaced letters help developing minds tointerpret and form letters. There is a culture area where coded maps willinform her charges of the multicultural people and places in the world

they inherit, along with its seasons, creatures and other wonders. Books, sound boxes, toys, writing books, coloured pencils, endless hours…oh tobe three again! Seated at 'circle time,' children will "learn to ask questions and expressthemselves and also to listen while others do so," advises the teacher. Aspeech therapist will also be available to facilitate development of lan-guage, literacy and listening skills. There is also an outdoor play area. Each parent will receive an end of term progress report, each child an end-of-year file. Capable of facilitating a maximum of 20 children, the school will adhereto the HSE regulated ratio of one teacher per maximum of 10. The cur-riculum -practical life, sensorial, language, maths, history, geography, sci-ence, drama, arts & crafts- will address each child's specific needs as theyprogress at their own pace. The purpose and the end result is to "learn andbe happy," concludes Sharon, in what would be a worthy template for theadult world too. Bee Happy will open on September 1st. Enrolments are still being taken.First sessions run from 9.15 am-12.15 am, Monday to Friday. Second ses-sions run 1 pm to 4 pm, all across 38 weeks and operating in conjunctionwith the primary school calendar. Enrolments accepted under theGovernment sponsored free pre-school year Early Child Care Education(ECCE) scheme. Free summer camp at year end. Further details, costsetc.,from Sharon on 087-6732574. Visits welcome.

By Christy ParkerThe Youghal Concerned Citizens (YCC) group advanced several schemesduring its August meeting in the Red Store. Amongst the issues discussedwere: Mackerel Food Festival; With chief protagonist and marketing consultantTim Magee temporarily absent, Norman McDonald said the eventremained on schedule for Barry's Lane on Saturday August 27th. "Peopleare working on it and the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism is very kind-ly assisting with advertising," he added. The mini-festival will include food stalls and associated attractions, includ-ing music (probably courtesy of Foróige). Permits will be provided forauthentic stall operators to discourage unofficial hawkers and the like, whowill be moved on by gardaí. Local restaurants are committed to participat-ing in an event where mackerel dishes of various ingenuity and preparationwill be celebrated and, doubtlessly, consumed. Three cases of the tabby-grey creatures have already been pledged, while hopefully their livingcousins will honour the occasion with their presence in the nearby waters.A plan remains to entice former Loreto students -of whom the class of '91is holding a reunion on the same date- to swim amongst in the dock. It'sunclear as to the link between former Loreto girls and gutted mackerelother than possibly some shoals of young males would have had theirdreams 'gutted' by the said ladies in times past. No matter, when it comesto marketing Youghal any depths -literally- are fathomable! Not forgetting Halloween… Secretary Adrian Hyde reminded that "all outfestivals are intended to promote Youghal." While the mackerel versionwould promote its seafood and maritime culture, the proposed Halloweenfestival would focus on the town's history and heritage in a family-friendlyway, during the relatively stagnant business period before Christmas.Traders would hopefully help create an ambience and a letter being circu-lated would detail some "fairly simple" and inexpensive requirements, suchas dressing oneself windows appropriately, etc. So far, the proposed Halloween schedule included a headless horsemanappearing randomly in the town, a Halloween themed parade, replicas oftorture machines, pumpkin, spot-the-ghost competitions and storytellingfor children at historic venues, Youghal Haloween tours, fortune telling, adults fancy dress competition, volunteers in Halloween type dress greet-ing visitors, Halloween themed restaurant food, etc. A festival committeewas currently deliberating on the ideas. A themed Christmas was being con-sidered on similar lines. Chairman Jim Flanagan said there seemed gener-ally to be public belief in both. Clean Up Your Area: Jim Flanagan said it was time to establish a date fora previously devised 'clean up your area' initiative. The first week inSeptember was the deemed most suitable time, ideally in tandem with theTidy Town's committee. Further details will be forthcoming. The 49 Steps: The secretary said the onus was now on the YCC to furnishinsurance and a health and Safety clearance statement, which volunteerworkman Kieran Dennehy was organising. Meanwhile the town engineerwould shortly forward the work specifications and thereafter the remedialwork required to re-open the steps would commence. Application for inclusion in Feargal Quinn's town regeneration project forRTE television: Youghal's bid had failed but hopes remain that it may stillbe included amongst "ancillary pieces" attached to the series. Dog Litter; Jim Flanagan said the feedback was very positive on the effortsto counteract dog litter. Increased signage was needed on the North MainStreet however, as "the dogs don't seem to be reading them!" Lil Dannobserved. Anti -dog litter signs are available from the town hall on requestfor residents associations, etc. From the floor, consultation was sought withthe relevant local authority regarding a dog warden to deal with stray dogs, especially on estates.Tour Buses; Jim Flanagan noted that coaches previously stopping for halfan hour were are now dallying for up to three hours following the persist-ent efforts of Norman McDonald and Cliff Windsor (in costume) to greettour parties and to negotiate with drivers and tour operators. NormanMcDonald said he had secures a visiting convoy of nine buses, bearing 500passengers, from a cruise liner docking at Cobh on both Thursday August18th and Tuesday September 6th. He requested (and has since received)volunteers to assist with greeting the visitors and advised that a goodimpression would almost certainly usher Youghal onto future liner excur-sions. Plans would be fashioned to make the new visitors' visit informativeand memorable. Fishing Brochure, Sludge Treatment, Old Railway Station, TrafficWarden, Green Park; Norman McDonald complained that Youghal wasabsent from the annual Bord Fáilte Munster fishing guide. "The Blackwaterseemingly doesn't exist in Youghal!", he fumed. A delegation is to be dis-patched to Fáilte Ireland. There was no update as yet from the Chamberregarding its appeal to An Bord Pleanála against Cork County Council'splanning permission for an extension to facilitate the treatment of toxicwaste. Irish Rail/CIE has erected new fencing and tidied the area somewhat

but more needed to be done. It was requested that the town clerk be askedto clarify the status of traffic warden duties as private vehicles were nowregularly occupying loading bays. An update was sought also on the plansfor the imminent resurfacing of the main road. The meeting ended with arequest that the town clerk also provide an update on "the situation regard-ing the fountain in Green Park" as there third parties "interested in restor-ing it." Norman McDonald was curious as to the whereabouts of the swansthat once silently awaited water in the neglected structure. The Beach; A YCC Seaside committee were currently compiling proposalfor toilets, showers and casual trading licences. Funding of €197,000 forthe Youghal Town Council section (Front strand to Claycastle car park) hadbeen acquired from Failte Ireland and work was expected to commencenext spring. Cork County Council had still not acquired funding from thesame source, to extend the facility as far as Redbarn. The plan is on displayon the left of town hall entrance.Clock Gate; The chairman said he understood that feasibility and conservationstudies having been completed, the town council were seeking funding to under-take the restoration and transformation of the structure. Norman McDonald pro-posed the group ask that it be opened for the mackerel food fest, as was facili-tated during the Queen of the Seas event. Thanks Janice, Thanks Frank: Adrian Hyde thanked Janice O'Leary forher on-going project in researching and providing more representative andbetter quality photographs of Youghal for posting on travel sites. FrankMurphy was thanked for his contribution in signage building and otherworks associated with YCC projects. Community Bus; In the light of comments recently aired in the YoughalNews, Tony Phelan stressed that the bus service is a "voluntary, non-profitmaking" enterprise that does not intend to compete with anyone."Everything is run above board and anyone without a membership card isnot allowed on board," he proceeded. He thanked the YCC for assisting inthe recruitment of two voluntary female driver companions, adding thattwo Suas (Educational development) workers were also being recruited. Hesaid the service was about to be expanded (see elsewhere in this issue) andwill operate in conjunction with the town health centre. He spoke briefly ofan elderly woman whose life quality had been immensely enhanced by thebus service. "That's basically what it's all about," he concluded. The next Youghal, Concerned Citizens meeting is on September 1st in theRed Store, at 7.30 pm.

NORTHERN COUPLE GIVE YOUGHAL ITSFIRST CIVIL MARRIAGE CEREMONY

By Christy ParkerA couple who fled Northern Irelandto escape the Troubles 30 years agohave become the first people marryin a civil ceremony in Youghal.Vicki Magee and Alan Pikeexchanged vows before their twochildren Jacob (12) and Joyce (2),along with 70 family, friends andneighbours in the Mall Artscentre/town hall last Friday, August5th. Guests from as far afield asGlasgow, Belfast and Shannonattended a ceremony performed bysolemniser Rena Noonan from theCork Registrar of Births, Deathsand Marriages. The chief witnesseswere Vicki's brother Tim and Alan'sbest friend Gavin Meehan. Present

also was comedian and family friend Pat Shortt. Childcare worker Vicki, 38 and bricklayer Alan 40, first met in Shannon,to where both their families had located from Belfast in the 1980's. Theydated for three years and then split up "because we were too bloody stub-born," recalls Vicki. "However, having "checked out the grass in otherfields, we reunited and have been together for 12 years since," sheexplains. The pair followed Tim's footprints to Youghal in 2006 and live50 metres from the town hall. "We adore it here and have the best neigh-bours imaginable," smiles Vicki. The couple were attracted by the scenic splendour of the adjacentBlackwater for their civil union. Last Friday the sun glimmered on theriver as the wedding party gathered by the centre's glass-enclosed rearreception area at 3 pm. The bride wore a plum off the shoulder chiffongown, with gold-plated platforms and blond hair tied up with pink rosepins. The groom was adorned in a lightweight, Italian-style grey suit, mauve tie and black shoes. As gulls cried on the breeze, boats bobbed lazily on the calm waters andchildren's voices rent the air from a small, adjacent beach, the couplewalked the red carpet into the building. Twenty minute later, to cheers andapplause, they kissed and embraced as Ms Noonan pronounced them hus-band and wife. The marriage was celebrated with a marquee reception in the garden ofTim Magee's riverside residence some 200 metres away, with local Italianrestaurant Capri Bay providing the catering. The bride's mother will carefor the couple's children in Bangor while the honeymoon will be spent"gradually travelling up there to collect them!" said Vicki.

Team Youghal will create history on Sept 11th when they will compete inthe 1,350 mile Race Around Ireland Cycle Race for the third successiveyear. This year the team will be raising funds for two local charities,Youghal Hospice and Youghal Meals on Wheels.THE RACE AROUND IRELAND is quite simply the toughest cyclingendurance test in Europe covering a massive distance of 1,350 miles trav-elling through all four Irish Provinces with many steep climbs and sharpdescents along the way. What makes this such a fantastic challenge is the constant flow of the racewhich runs 24 hours a day from start to finish, with little or no let up andthat overwhelming desire not only to complete the race, but to win it! 'Team Youghal's' winning time in the 2009 'Race Around Ireland' wasclocked at 90 hours and 6 minutes and they improved this by almost twohours last year in very poor weather conditions. The race is part of the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA)World Cup Series and the race is organised by the Navan Road Club andis sanctioned by Cycling Ireland. In the 'Race Around Ireland' once the clock starts for 'Team Youghal' inNavan on September 11th it won't stop until they reache the finish line atthe end of the 1,350 mile circuit. This is the second most gruelling bikeraces in the world, the toughest being the Race Across America and TeamYoughal became the first Irish 8 Person Team to complete this race inJune of this year in seven days and 14 hours. Team Leader Ger Flanagan said "This is a great group of people and thereis a great togetherness about the team both on the bikes and in the supportcrew. The support crew are the vital cog in our whole race attempt. We arelooking forward to taking on this challenge for a 3rd successive year andwould like to ask as many people as possible to support the excellent workof Youghal Hospice and Youghal Meals on Wheels". Sponsorship Cardsare in circulation from Youghal Meals and Wheels, Youghal Hospice andfrom Team Youghal. Team Youghal held a launch for their chosen charities at Youghal Hospitalrecently and both charities as really looking forward to the race. The Racewill pass through Youghal on Wednesday 14TH September and onceagain the Walter Raleigh Hotel has been chosen by the Race Organisersas an Official Time Station.Organising or working on an event such as the 'Race Around Ireland' takesmassive work hours and 'Race Around Ireland' race director Alan Hearyand his team deserve tremendous praise for their efforts.Alan Heary said "Team Youghal' are a very important part of the 'RaceAround Ireland' event, because they bring a very professional team andback up crew to the race, with everything in terms of planning and struc-ture as well as pure enthusiasm. I think the spirit of the event is definedby 'Team Youghal' in their approach to everyone involved in the event. There is nobody they wouldn't help or give the best advice to, there isalways an excellent genuine attitude, I believe 'Team Youghal' embodieseverything that is good about the 'Race Around Ireland' and we aredelighted to see them back once again". The race route through Cork is incredible, entering the County inGlengarriff, heading on to Bantry, Goleen, Mizen Head, Skull,Ballydehob, Skibbereen, Leap, Ross Carbery, Clonakilty, Timoleague,Ballinspittle, Kinsale, Ballincollig, Kerry Pike, Blarney, Cork City(Including St Patrick's Hill), Glanmire, Carrigtwohill, Midleton,Castlemartyr, Killeagh and on to Youghal, before heading to Dungarvanand on the Mahon Falls. To keep up to date with 'Team Youghal's' race progress plus dailyreports log into www.teamyoughal.com

YOUGHAL YAWL TO BE LAUNCHED NEXT WEEKEND

By Christy ParkerTwelve months after it was built, a 'yawl made in Youghal' will belaunched at Nealon's Quay next Saturday (August 20th.) Sean Kelly MEPwill perform the necessary in a celebratory ceremony that will also see thevessel christened 'Eochaill.' The salmon boat is the product of a Youghal Maritime Heritage projectprocessed by Cllr Barbara Murray through the Youghal Socio EconomicDevelopment Group. Supported by SECAD, it was conducted throughoutAugust 2010 within Tynte's Castle, North Main Street under the directionand expertise of veteran boat builder Jimmy Horgan, a Youghal nativenow living in Galway. The boat was built using traditional tools andmethodology and is an exact replica of the last yawl built in Youghal byPaddy Buttimer two decades previous. The project created huge interest amongst tourists and locals, engender-ing a strong sense of community spirit as visitors were encouraged todrive a nail or tell a tale in the intimate indoor surroundings. Copious teaand tarts were consumed in the evolving process. Over the winter, the boat was painted and varnished under cover and nowawaits its official baptism. Interestingly, the participation of former GAApresident Kelly holds European connotations and, as Cllr Murray has fur-ther boat building projects ideas that would necessitate funding, Brusselsor Salzburg may prove a better option than piracy on the high seas. Let'sbe nice to the bearded MEP. Meanwhile 'Eochail's' future is matter of conjecture and promise. CllrMurray is asking for submissions from parties interested in acquiring thecraft. "Ideally it would be taken on by a local group and put to use," shesays. "Another possibility is the formation of a rowing club and perhapsbuilding further boats as a seasonal tourism venture. It would also be greatif training courses in boat building could be established, given its place inYoughal's heritage." The launch takes place at 11am.

7th AnniversaryJames (Junior) O’Brien

Late of Kilmaloo, Kinsalebeg, Youghal.Who died on 25th August 2004

God looked around his garden and saw an empty space,He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face.

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest,God’s garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.

God knew you were in pain and a cure was not be be,So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered come to me.

With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away,Although we love you dearly, we knew you could not stay.It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone,

For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.

Sadly missed by your loving wife Carmel & children Lorraine,Daniel, Aileen, Evelyn, Karen & Grandchild Callum,

life was changed forever in a moment of madness when the car in whichhe was a passanger was driven at high speed before being involved in asingle vehicle accident. In his book "Angles watching over me" -JimStewart gives a detailed account of the heart breaking days and monthsfollowing his sons accident. Helplessly he and his family watched on astheir loved son, brother and friend James who having been resuscitatedthree times by paramedics at the scene of the accident, overcome horren-dous spinal and brain injuries which he sustained in the accident. However they now look forward withoptisium to the future as the watch their maricle son - who despite semiparalization, seizures and mood swings enjoys a reasonably good qualityof life with the use of some aids and for this they are eternally greatful. By Christy ParkerYoughal's sole metered taxi operator wish-es to clarify his position following hisomission from a report on fares and condi-tions in the local industry in the YoughalNews of 2/8/11. Mr Pat O'Shea,Copperally, operates as Taxi 1st. Howeverthe business, operating from a mobilenumber, is thus not phone book listed andis untraceable on the internet.Additionally, Mr. O'Shea's listed personallandline no longer operates. This con-tributed considerably to the publishedassertion that his taxi service "appeared tobe out of service." Mr O'Shea is keen to emphasise that he is very much in business, not leastto the many regular customers in whose telephone address books his num-ber resides and who provide the largest percentage of his trade. Pat, who has been in the taxi business for five years, offers the followingrates in his six-seat, leathered-upholstered, privacy-glassed HyundaiTrajet: Standard (8am to 8pm) fare has an initial fixed rate of €4.10 up to1km or 170 secs; Tariff A: €1.03 per km or 36c per min up to 14 km/40mins to €18.70; Tariff B: €1.35 per km or 48c per min for next 15 km/42mins to €38.90; Tariff C: €1.77 per km or 63c per min over 30km/85 minsand beyond €38.90. From 8 pm to 8 am, plus Sundays and public holidays his Premium rateequivalent is a fixed €4.45 up to 1km or 170 secs. Tariff A: €1.35 perkm/48c per min up to 14 km/40 mins/€23.45; Tariff B: €1.57 per km/55cper min up for next 15 km/42 mins/€47.05; Tariff C: €1.77 per km/63c permin over 30 km/85 mins/€47.05.Advanced booking fee is €2. There is a €1 charge for second and addition-al adult passengers, additional to the metre reading. Children under 12allowance see the first child free and €1 extra for 2 to 3 children, €2 for 4to 5 and €3 for 6 or 7. Soiling charge is €140. Discounts and discretion; There is, as always in the trade, room for dis-cretion, in Pat's case particularly for long runs, weddings, etc. Meanwhile,he says his discount policy sees him "charge any passenger travellingalone not more than €5 for a journey within the urban area -i.e. where the50 km per hour speed limit kicks in." His rate from the Quality Hotelstarts at €10.90, plus the 'extra adults/children' rates where applicable. In terms of taxi services generally, Pat concurs with the bus and hackneyproviders that it is a tough economic jungle in which to survive at pres-ent. "When you add in social aggravation and so on, anyone makingmoney out there deserves every cent," he insists. Taxi rank; He feels he would make have greater opportunity to do sowere a proper taxi rank to be installed in the town. He is mystified as towhy this has not occurred, given that it has been aired and apparentlysanctioned within Youghal Town Council some years ago. Two other taxiproviders abandoned hope and departed the town in the wake of its non-arrival, he says. He would favour such a rank being located "near the towncentre with the onus on convenience and safety for passengers." Heintends to seek clarity on the issue in the near future. Anyone call a taxirank to the town hall?! CLARIFICATION: John Long of Worldwide Cabs wishes to correct amisunderstanding carried in the last issue of Youghal News. The compa-ny does not operate a 40/60 payment policy with its drivers, but ratherpays a set hourly wage. Mr. Long explains also that he did not state asmuch but rather that his comment was misinterpreted.

Wednesday 3rd August The girls played thegame away to Sars. The improvement sincethe start of the year has been fantastic and theencouragemnet from the sideline is also agreat boost for the young girls.Best of luck also to Emily Roche as she con-tinues with the Cork U15 team on Saturday12th August.Junior B Championship. Youghal vBallincollig 7 August 2011Youghal played thefirst of 3 games in a round robin series againstBallincollig last Sunday night in Ballincollig.

On the way to the field it looked like the game would be cancelled as theforcast was horendous, but just before the warm up the sun came out andit was a perfect evening for the game.Conditions were a little slippery and it took both teams a few minutes tosettle into the play. The game started off slowly and Ballincollig were thefirst on the score board scoring from a free. Youghal were given 2 consec-utive frees from the 45 but were unable to hold their composure and bothwent wide.A change of free taker and Edel O'Connell stepped up to the plate andknocked a fine point over from a placed ball. Ballincollig scored another2 points from frees leaving the score at 0-3 to 0-1 to the Ballincollig team.Shannen Joyce was nest to score for the youghal side sending a greatscore over from play. Surging runs from Edel O'Connell and CatherineO'Donoghe into the forward line gave the side line something to cheerabout, but it was unlucky for Youghal on the night as they hit the cross bar4 times, 3 in the first half and once in the second. Another 2 frees wereawarded and Ballincollig took all their chances sending both points overthe bar. Leah Broderick scored a great answering point from play from thehalf forward line. At half-time the score stood at 0-5 to 0-3 to Ballincollig.there was no lying down at half time and subsitute Siobhan Downing, who is still not back to full fitness with an ankle injury put a fine pointover after 1 minute of the second half, but Ballincollig weren't far behindscoring 2 points from frees. The Youghal side were trailing by 3 points butnever dropped the heads, they continued to battle hard and a goal alwayslooked inevitable.Great runs again from the half back line that were now conecting wellwith the half forwards made space for each other. The Youghal tacticswere starting to come together and a dangerous ball from the youghal for-ward line resulted in a quick goal from Kerry Handcock leaving the scorelevel. All was looking well with a minute to go then a free was awardedto ballincollig in their half-forward line resulting in a point forBallincollig leaving the Ballincollig team victourious at 0-8 to 1-4.The Youghal juniors now take on The Glen on Friday 12th August at theTop field at 7pm please support the girls.

Back to school budgetingCounting the cost of books, stationery and other expenses

Getting children back to school is an expensive task at the best oftimes, but even more so during a tough economic downturn. The costs can quickly mount up, from buying new books and stationeryto regular outgoings for lunches and pocket money.By being clever and knowing your way around the system there are stillsome key ways that smart consumers can save money. There may be less pressure on your household budget if you plan careful-ly and buy key items in instalments throughout the summer, rather thanall in one go at the last minute.SchoolbooksSchool textbooks can be a very expensive part of back-to-school costs, soit can pay to shop around when buying books, whether old or new.Ask the school if it runs a second-hand book sale - there may be bargains, but make sure that you are not buying a book that is outdated. Compareprices in bookshops with those from online retailers, as well as specialisedschoolbook websites.Another way to save money is to trade in or sell books that your childrenhave finished with - once again it's worth shopping around to get the bestoffer. Some schools operate book-lending schemes, which you might wish toinvestigate and try setting one up in your school. Don't forget that somebooks such as popular classics are also available from libraries, thoughlending times can be limited. When buying second-hand books from a retailer, it is reasonable to expectsome wear and tear. But they must still be "fit for purpose" - if they arefaulty (for example have pages missing), you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund.StationeryBuying stationery in bulk can be cheaper than buying items one by one. There can be good offers at back-to-school time, such as bundles of copy-books, pens and notebooks, so it's good to buy what you think you willneed for the year.Bulk buying with family, friends or neighbours can also bring the costdown further.LunchesPacked lunches prepared at home are not only cheaper than shop-boughtlunches - they are often nicer and more nutritious.Remember too that some lunchbox products targeted at children can workout being far more expensive than putting them together yourself - andthey can also contain large amounts of salt and sugar. Many schools now have "no junk" policies and specifically request thatparents avoid including snack foods and sweets in lunchboxes. So mak-ing packed lunches for the children can also be a good means of limitingtheir intake of fatty foods or those with high sugar content.A little time spent planning your family's weekday lunch menu before youdo the shopping can be good for your child's health and can end up sav-ing you a tidy sum, so set aside a moment for this in your week and watchthe benefits mount up.
