The first layer of clothing which is worn next to the skin should be close fitting such as polypropylene, polyester and wool.

The second layer, such as long sleeved wool or nylon shirt should be loose fitting to keep you warm but, not hot.

The third layer like a woollen pullover or jacket offers additional insulation to ensure that the bottom layers stay dry as well.

The fourth layer or outside layer should be water proof and windproof to keep cold air out and keep you warm and dry.
