HUSKERS.COM | 5 INAUGURAL BIG TEN CONFERENCE SEASON | COACHES AND STAFF Sco Jacobson Sco Jacobson is entering his 21st season as head coach of the Nebraska women’s tennis team, where he is the winningest and longest- serving coach in NU history. Jacobson has guided the team to 15 straight winning seasons, dang back to the Big 12’s inaugural season in 1996-97, and has had at least 16 victories in seven of the past eight years. He is on track to earn his 300th career victory in the 2011-12 season, as he enters this year with 285 wins. Jacobson achieved his 250th career victory in the 2009-10 season, aſter entering with 243 wins. In the seventh match of the season against Air Force, the Huskers swept the Falcons 7-0 to give the coach the milestone victory. Aſter laying a strong foundaon in his first five years in Lincoln, Jacobson has helped Nebraska become a fixture in the naonal rankings and a force at the conference level. Jacobson was named the 2005 Big 12 Coach of the Year aſter leading the team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and an 18-4 record. The following year, the Huskers made it to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships, the farthest they have advanced in team history. They finished with a 17-10 record in 2006 and another berth to the NCAA Championships, while Kim Hartmann was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year. In 2009, Jacobson helped the Huskers to their second straight 16-7 record, balancing a lineup of three talented newcomers along with three experienced seniors and four other returning leerwinners. The Huskers’ 7-4 Big 12 record was good enough for fourth place in the conference, the team’s second-highest finish ever and highest since it finished third in the 2005 season. The 2010 season saw the team achieve its most success to date under Coach Jacobson. The team’s impressive 22-6 record featured a third place Big 12 finish and the Huskers’ first-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament against Illinois. In recognion of the team’s accomplishments, Jacobson was named the 2010 Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second me in his career at Nebraska. Nebraska’s 2011 campaign reached comparable levels of success. The squad achieved a 20-8 record and a fourth-place finish in its final season of Big 12 play. NU qualified for its third-straight NCAA Tournament and placed two student-athletes on the All-Big 12 singles team: Madeleine Geibert and Patricia Veresova. Under Jacobson, seven players have earned Big 12 individual tles, as well as 26 first-team All-Big 12 honors by 13 players. Academics have always been an area of success of the women’s tennis team under Jacobson. During his career at NU, Jacobson’s Huskers have earned 47 academic all- conference accolades, including 33 first-team cerficates. Jacobson also guided the athlec career of two-me CoSIDA Academic All- American Imke Reimers. The women’s tennis team has also received the Herman Award, given to the NU team with the top overall grade-point average for the academic year, mulple mes. Before becoming head coach in 1991, Jacobson helped the NU men’s team to an 84- 86 record as an assistant coach for nine years. Aſter playing professionally for two seasons, Jacobson served as an assistant with the Husker men’s program from 1979 to 1989. Jacobson also spent 11 years as the assistant director of the Tennis and Life Camp in St. Peter,Minn. He has been an employee of the camp for 22 years. In 1995, Jacobson was awarded the David Aasen Award by the staff of the Tennis and Life Camp. The award honors enthusiasm, energy, sense of humor, high standards of sportsmanship, a love of teaching and a genuine concern for others. Originally from Blue Earth, Minn., Jacobson has been involved in many acvies in Nebraska. In the past he has been an instructor for the Lincoln Racquet Club and coordinator for the Husker Neers Booster Club. Assistant coach Hayden Perez enters hisseventhseasonatNebraska in2011-12.Perezis inhis12thseasonasacollegiatecoachandassists with team travel, recruiting, practicesandon-court coaching. TheHuskershavehada combined record of 104-47 in Perez’s sixseasonsasassistantcoach. In his first seasonwith the Huskers, PerezhelpedguideNebraskatoitssecondconsecutiveberthintheNCAATournament,asNUfinishedwith a 17-10 record and advanced to thesemifinals of the2006Big 12Championships.Perez assisted the development of KimHartmann, who was named the 2006 Big 12FreshmanoftheYear. Perezhelped theHuskers to a16-7 recordin2009, includinga7-4Big12mark,andwasinstrumental in coachingNebraska to its first-everNCAATournamentvictoryoverIllinois. Perez was named the ITA Central Region’sAssistantCoachof theYear in2007asoneofeightcoachesintheeightITAregionstoreceivethe award. Perez was automatically qualifiedalong with the other seven coaches for theNationalAssistantCoachoftheYearAward. Perezassisted theHuskers to their record-breaking22-6finishin2010,inwhichtheteamfinishedthirdintheBig12Conferenceand35thinthenation.HiscoachingrolewasalsokeyintheseasonsofAll-Big12selectionsMadeleineGeibert, Mary Weatherholt and StefanieWeinstein.Forhisefforts,PerezwasnamedtheITACentralRegion’sAssistantCoachoftheYearforthesecondtimeinfouryears. Perez played a key part in guiding NU toits second-straight 20-win season in 2011,wheretheteamcappedtheyearwithanNCAATournament bid and finished 43rd in the ITADivison I Women’s National Rankings. UnderPerez’stutelage,MadeleineGeibertandPatriciaVeresovabothearnedAll-Big12honors. Before coming to Lincoln, Perez spent the2004-05seasonatFloridaState.AtFSU,Perezhelped Mihaela Moldovan earn All-Americahonors, the Seminoles’ first All-American innine years. Perez helped the Seminoles to a2005NCAATournamentappearanceandafinalrankingof43rdintheITAteampoll. Perez’s coaching experience also includesstintsatCameronUniversity,WyomingandAirForce.AtAirForce,PerezworkedastheDirectorof Player Development for the IntermountainSection of the U.S. Tennis Association, wherehe oversaw endorsement opportunities,scheduling,rankingsandjuniorcompetition. Asaplayer,PerezearnedMVPhonorstwice

and advanced to the finals of the MidwestRegionChampionshipsin1996whileplayingatCameronUniversity.HewasrankedashighasNo.17insinglesandearnedatop-fivenationalranking in Men’s Open Doubles by the U.S.TennisAssociation. AtCollinCounty(Texas)CC,PerezhelpedtheteamtoanNJCAAnationalteamchampionshipin1995,whenhewonthedoublesnationaltitleandearnedfirst-teamAll-Americahonors.PerezearnedaNo.1nationalrankingindoublesandwasrankedinthetop30insinglesplayatthejuniorcollegelevel. Perez, who won at least 20 matches ineachofhisfouryearsofcollegiatetennis,waspreviously a member of the Abilene (Texas)HighSchoolsquadthatwonthe1991Class5Astatetitle.Hestillplayscompetitive tennisonthenationalsceneintheMen’s30Divisionandinselecttournamentsthroughouttheyear. Perez graduated from Cameron Universityin 1999 with a business administrationdegree,andismarriedtotheformerGretchenMcGeough. They have a son, Tristen, born inOctober2008.

Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne hascontinuedtoleavealastingimpressiononthehistoryofNebraskaAthleticssincereturningtoleadtheHuskerprogramastheschool’s13thathleticdirectoronOct.16,2007.Osborne,wholedNebraskatothreenationalchampionships(1994,1995,1997)and255victoriesinhis25yearsastheHuskers’headfootballcoach,hascontinuedtousehisimpressiveleadershipskillstoguidetheNUathleticdepartmentasawholeoverthepastfourseasons.With the core values of integrity, trust, respect,

teamwork and loyalty serving as guiding principlesforNebraska’s23-sportprogramasawhole,OsbornehasmadehistoricdecisionstohelptheUniversityofNebraskaathleticprogramsforyearstocome.InJuneof2010,OsbornejoinedNebraskaChancellor

HarveyPerlmanandBigTenConferenceCommissionerJimDelanytoannouncetheHuskerswouldjointheBigTenbeginningonJuly1,2011.Nebraska’smovetotheBigTenisexpectedtoaddUniversity-wideacademicopportunities,whileprovidingfinancialstabilityfortheathleticdepartmentforyearstocome.Just a few months later, Osborne announced

anaggressiveexpansionplanfortheeastsideofMemorial Stadium thatwill increase attendancepast 90,000 for the first time, while continuingNebraska’s NCAA record-setting sellout streak.Theexpansion,whichissetforcompletionbeforethe2013footballseason,willincludeathleticandacademicresearchcomponents.In the spring of 2010, the city of Lincoln also

received voter approval to begin construction on a16,000-seatdowntownarena,whichwillserveasthenewcompetitivehomeforbothNebraskamen’sandwomen’sbasketballprogramsbeginningin2013-14.The basketball programs, thewrestling program

andmanyofNU’sothersportswillalsobenefitfromtheHendricksTrainingComplexattheBobDevaneySportsCenter.Thefacility,whichopenedinOctoberof2011, includesnewpracticeand teamareas, inadditiontoexpandedathleticmedicineandstrengthtrainingareas.TheNebraskabaseballandsoftballprogramswill

also benefit froma new indoor practice facility atHaymarketPark,whichopenedlastfall.ThefirststepinOsborne’saggressivebuildingplan

for Nebraska’s facilities began in the summer of2010,astheHuskersbrokegroundontheStudentLifeComplexonthewestsideofMemorialStadium.TheStudentLifeComplex,whichopenedinthefallof2010,directlybenefitseveryHuskerstudent-athletewithexpandedacademicresources.WhileOsbornehashelpedinitiatelandmarkmoves

offthefield,hehascontinuedtohelpcoachesandstudent-athletes focus on Nebraska’s tradition ofsuccess in competition. In fact, the Huskers haveenjoyedrenewedsuccessinOsborne’sfirstfouryearsasathleticdirector.In2010-11,eightHuskerteamsfinishedamongthe

top20inthenation,while15NUsquadsadvancedto

postseasonplayintheirrespectivesports,includingtheHuskerfootball team’ssecondstraightHolidayBowlappearance.OneofOsborne’sfirstmajordecisionsasathletic

directorwastohireBoPeliniastheHuskers’footballcoach.Pelini,whohadspentthe2003campaignasNU’sdefensivecoordinator,hasenergizedNebraska’sstoriedtraditionwithback-to-back10-winseasonsandatrioofBig12NorthDivisiontitlesinhisfirstthreeyears. In 2009 and 2010, Pelini’s Huskers finishedamongthetop20teamsinthenationinthefinalpolls.Thetradition-richNUvolleyballprogramhasclaimed

threeBig12titlesandadvancedtothreeNCAASweet16appearances,whilethewomen’sbasketballprogramhasearnedtwoNCAATournamenttrips,whilenotchingthebestseasoninschoolhistorywitha2010Big12titleandaberthintheNCAASweet16.TheNUwrestlingprogramsharedthe2009Big12titleandfinishedinthetop16atfourstraightNCAAChampionships.TheNUmen’sandwomen’strackandfieldteamscombinedforthreeconferencecrowns,whileproducingseventop-20finishesindoorsandoutdoorsoverthepastfouryears.Themen’s andwomen’s gymnastics teams have

producedtop-10NCAAfinishesthepasttwoyears,includingaschool-record-tyingfourth-placeshowingby thewomen in 2011. TheHusker bowling teamwonthe2009NCAAtitleandhasfinishedinthetopeightattheNCAAChampionshipseachofthepastfouryears.TheNUrifleteamhasproducedapairoftop-sixNCAAfinishesinthelastfouryears,whilethemen’sandwomen’stennisteamsbothearnedNCAATournamenttripsin2010and2011.The2010NCAAfirst-round victory for thewomenwas the first inschoolhistory,whilethemen’sappearancein2010wasthefirstinschoolhistory.The Husker softball team has made three

consecutiveNCAATournamentappearances,whiletheHuskerwomen’sgolfandbaseballprogramsbothearnedNCAARegionalbidsin2008.Osbornemadehissecondcoachinghiresincehis

returntoNebraska,whenhenamedtwo-timeMajorLeagueAll-Star,three-timeGoldGloveawardwinner,andformerNo.1MLBDraftpickDarinErstadasthebaseballteam’snewcoachonJune2,2011.ErstadwasnotonlyoneofthebestHuskerbaseballplayersinhistory,hewasthestartingpunteronNU’s1994national championship football team coached byOsborne.While the Huskers have continued to make

advancements in competition and in recruitingunderOsborne’sguidance,theyhavecontinuedtosetthebarhighacademically.NebraskaledtheBig12with14CoSIDAAcademicAll-Americansin2010-11,increasingitsnation-leadingtotalto291CoSIDAAcademic All-Americans all-time, across all sports.TheHuskersalsoledtheBig12withaleague-record192academicall-conferenceselections,alongwithaconference-record688Big12Commissioner’sHonorRollselections.NUgraduated113student-athletesfromAugustof2010throughMayof2011.

BeforebeingaskedbyChancellorPerlmantoreturntoNUasathleticdirector in2007,Osborneservedthree terms in the U.S. House of Representatives(Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district) from 2000to2006.He returned to academia following a 2006

gubernatorial bid, serving as a senior lecturer atNebraskaintheCollegeofBusinessAdministration,teachingleadershipandbusinessethics,inthefallof2007.Osbornealsoworkedasaconsultantforlocalcollegeathleticdepartmentsfortwoyears.Osborneandhiswife,Nancy,continuetopourtheir

time and support into the TeamMates mentoringprogram,whichtheyfoundedin1991.TeamMatesprovides encouragement to school-aged youth tohelpthemgraduatefromhighschoolandpursueapost-secondaryeducation.Osborne’s leadership of the TeamMates program

beganwhilehewasputtingthefinaltouchesononeofthebestcoachingcareersincollegefootballhistory.TheHastings,Neb.,native,whoearnedmaster’sanddoctoraldegrees ineducationalpsychologyfromtheUniversity of Nebraska,was namedNU’s 25th headcoachfollowingthe1972season.In25seasonswithOsborneatthehelm,theHuskers

mounted a 255-49-3 record - the sixth-most winsin major college history. Osborne’s .836 winningpercentagerankedfifthall-time.Hiscareercametoaclosewitha42-17winoverNo.3Tennesseeinthe1998OrangeBowl,whenhebecamethefirstcoachincollegefootballhistorytoretireasareigningnationalchampion.Followinghiscareer,hebecameoneofjustfourcoachesinhistorytohavethemandatorythree-yearwaitingperiodwaivedforinductionintotheNationalFootballFoundationCollegeHallofFameinDecemberof1998.Osborne’s1994and1995teamsallowedNebraska

tobecomejustthesecondschoolinhistorytopostback-to-backperfectnationalchampionshipseasons(Oklahoma1955-56).Nebraskaputtogetherthebestfive-yearrunincollegefootballhistoryfrom1993to1997,going60-3withfivestraight11-winseasons.OsborneledNUto13conferencecrowns,including

sixofhislastsevenseasonsonthesideline.All25ofhisHuskerteamswonatleastninegamesandwenttoabowl,while15won10-or-moregames.Intheclassroom,theNUfootballprogramtotaled

65CoSIDAAcademicAll-AmericaawardsinOsborne’s25 years. In fact, he accumulated more footballAcademic All-Americans in his 25 years as coachthananyother footballprogram in thenationhasproducedinitshistory.Priortobecomingheadcoach,Osbornespentfive

seasonsunderDevaney,helpingtheHuskerswinback-to-backnationalchampionshipsin1970and1971.In1973,OsbornesucceededDevaney,whoalsoservedasNebraska’sAthleticDirectorfrom1967to1993.Osborne and his wife, Nancy, have three

adult children, Mike, Ann and Suzanne and fourgrandchildren.

Logsdon’s duties include oversight on alladministrativeissuesandoperationalfunctionsof theAthleticDirector’s office; oversight intheareasofadministration,athleticmedicine,nutrition, football operations, softball,women’s gymnastics and rifle; developingand implementingadministrativepoliciesand

procedures, assistingwith strategicplanning,reviewingandmaintaininggameandcoachingcontracts andoversightof theadministrativebudget.

Previously, Logsdon spent six seasons asNU’sdirectorof football operations, thefirstfemaleinDivisionItoserveinthatcapacity.Shehandledorganizationofallrecruitingfunctions,supervisedcomplianceactivitiesandcoordinatedallfootballadministrativeoperations,includingtravelandpracticeoperations.Logsdonservedthreeyearsasassistanttothedirectoroffootballoperations and 14 seasons as the footballrecruitingsecretary.

Logsdon received a bachelor’s degree ineducationfromNebraskain1989.

10 years as associate athletic director forcompliance/sports administration from 1998to2007.

Burton is responsible for the directadministrativesupervisiontothesportsofgolf,tennis,men’sgymnastics,trackandfield,crosscountry, bowling, wrestling and swimmingand diving. He also oversees the operationof Haymarket Park.Workingwith the LincolnSaltdogs,hehelpssetthebudgetforfieldandstadium operation costs and create strategicplansforthefacility.

Burtonisamemberoftheathleticdepartment’sexecutiveteam,whichhelpssetpolicy,developsshort-andlong-termgoalsandobjectives,andcreates strategic plans for the department.Burton has expanded his responsibilities byassisting the development office in areas offundraising and building relationships withathleticdepartmentsupporters.

BurtonfilledasimilarpositionatOklahomaStateastheassistantathleticdirectorforsportsadministration and compliance from 1993to 1997. He oversaw OSU’s Olympic sportsprogramsaswellas the trainingandstrengthandconditioning,wrestling,men’sandwomen’strackandfieldandmen’sandwomen’stennisprograms.

BurtoncametoNebraskafromTexasTech,whereheservedasanassociateathleticdirectorforcomplianceforoneyear.WhileatTexasTech,BurtonhelpedcompletetheNCAAinvestigationinto the Red Raider athletic department andanalyzed the entire compliance system atthe institution. He also helped identify andimplementfinancialaidandeligibilitysystems,includingchangesinpersonnelandrestructuringofthecompliancedepartment.

Burton, who was a member of the NCAADivisionIwomen’ssoccercommitteeforthreeyearsandwasamemberoftheNCAADivisionI bowling committee, served as a legislativeadministrator for the NCAA from 1989 to1993. At the NCAA, he was involved in thedevelopment of legislation, interpretation ofregulationsandreviewedlegalissuesrelatedtotheapplicationoftheassociation’sregulations.HeservedasanNCAAliaisontocommitteesandconductedcomprehensiveeducationtoseveralintercollegiate athletic conferences. He hasservedontheNationalAssociationofAthleticComplianceCoordinatorsExecutiveCommitteeand the subcommittee of Big 12 Directors ofCompliance.
