The Gotra is a system which associates a person with his

most ancient or root ancestor in an unbroken male lineage.

Brahmins identify their male lineage by considering themselves to be the descendants of the

8 great Rishis ie Saptarshis (The Seven Sacred Saints) + Agastya Rishi

.

All other Brahmin Gotras evolved from one of the above Gotras. What this means is that the

descendants of these Rishis over time started their own Gotras. All the established Gotras

today , each of them finally trace back to one of the root 8 Gotrakarin Rishi.

first cousin marriage increases the risk of passing on genetic abnormalities. But

for Bittles, 35 years of research on the health effects of cousin marriage have

led him to believe that the risks of marrying a cousin have been greatly

exaggerated.

There's no doubt that children whose parents are close biological relatives are at
