1. Communion Service September 23 in
place of 6:30PM Mass
The priests of our deanery (11 parishes
grouped together) have been invited to
have dinner with our new archbishop on
September 23
rd
. Deacon George Miller will
conduct a communion service in place of
6:30PM Mass that night. Adoration will
begin after the Communion Service and
Confessions will take place between
7:30PM and 8:30PM.
2. Brown Bag Lunch
Starting on Thursday, October 1
st
, Fr.
Pastorius and Fr. Holbrook will be hosting
“Brown Bag Lunches” in the Parish Center
at 11:30am. All are invited to bring their
own lunch and listen to Fr. Pastorius, Fr.
Holbrook or another staff member share
and discuss with you their ideas about the
Church at this time. We will not be taking
reservations but we will have to limit the
number of attendees to 45 people. Please
wear a mask as you enter the building and
be mindful of the six foot distancing rules.
3. Romans 12 Ministry
St. Paul reminds the Romans in his letter
to them that we are all “One Body.” Our
social distancing and isolation have left
many of our members feeling the pains of
loneliness. Mother Teresa reminds us,
“The most terrible poverty is loneliness,
and the feeling of being unloved.”
Knowing that the people of St. Joseph are
hurting in a special way at this moment
because of the Covid-19 virus, we would
like to create the Romans 12 Ministry.
Members of this group will agree to check
in with their prayer partner (probably over
the phone) at least once a week to see how
they are doing. If you are interested in
making a difference in someone’s life or if
you would like to receive a spiritual buddy,
please contact the parish office. We have
volunteers who will match you with
someone who needs to know that they are
an important part of our community even if
they cannot be with us physically. Please
contact Debby Marshall in the Parish
Office, [email protected] to
become a part of this ministry.
4. THE BETTER PART – Young Adult
Bible Study
As they continued their journey he entered
a village where a woman whose name was
Martha welcomed him. She had a sister
named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at
his feet listening to him speak. Martha,
burdened with much serving, came to him
and said, “Lord, do you not care that my
sister has left me by myself to do the
serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said
to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are
anxious and worried about many
things. There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part and it
will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10: 38-
42). Let us deepen our friendship with
Jesus as we explore each of the four
Gospels and we see how the Gospels show
us that Jesus is our Christ, our Teacher,
and our Friend and at the same time learn
about the role Jesus wants to play in each
of our lives. Our Young Adult Bible Study
will be held on the 1st and 3rd
Wednesdays of the month from 7:15PM-
8:15PM in the Education Center starting
October 7
th
.
5. Pet Blessings
The blessing of pets and animals is often
celebrated on October 4, the Feast of St.
Francis of Assisi. This year October 4
th
falls on a Sunday. We will try something
different this year and offer four different
times for people to have their pets blessed.
All blessings will take place on the upper
parking lot by the concession stand. The
times are 10:15AM, 12:15PM, 4:15PM, and
7PM.
6. RCIA
Why do Catholics do that? Are you
interested in learning more about the
Catholic Church? Perhaps you’ve been
thinking of becoming a member of St.
Joseph Parish, or perhaps you are just
curious about what Catholics believe.
Please think about attending the first few
sessions of our R.C.I.A. program. We’ll
meet on Sundays in room 14 at 10AM and
all are welcome. If you’d like more
information, call the parish office or email
Fr. Pastorius at
7. Possibly Renting our Space
We are entertaining the possibility of
renting out the basement level of our
school. The extra income would be helpful
during these tough times. Each potential
deal is being reviewed by Archdiocesan
lawyers and our parish finance council
before any decisions are made.
8. New and Improved Ambassador
Station
We want the ambassador’s station in the
vestibule to be your primary place to get
the information and items you need.
Simply make your request to our
ambassador and he or she will assist you if
you are in need of any of the following:
 Letter of Good Standing
 Baptismal Certificate
 Scholarship Forms
New Parishioner Information
 Lily and Hammer Club Forms
Mass Intentions
 ECLC Brochures
 And more!
9. Special Collection for Missions
Before the pandemic, our parish was asked
to participate in the yearly mission
cooperative plan in which parishes in the
Archdiocese have a missionary come to the
parish and explain their organization or
order’s mission. This talk is then followed
by a second collection. While we were not
able to host a missionary this summer, we
are asked to take a second collection for
the mission. This weekend, September 20,
we will have a special collection for the
LaSallette Missionary. If you would like to
make a donation to this great missionary
group, please go to WeShare (our online
giving program on our website) and donate
to the “Mission Appeal” collection. You
may also bring an envelope from home and
label it “Missions.”
10. Email Changes
Our parish is now on one email server.
Please make a note that all emails for staff
members are their first initial and last
name followed by @stjoemanchester.org.
Please discontinue using any emails that
end in @sjmschool.education. In
particular, Julie Quillo can only be reached
at [email protected] and Cathy
Noyes at [email protected]. If
you have sent them any emails in the last
few weeks please resend to their new
email. They are unable to retrieve emails
from the old server.
11. Directory Updates
We will be working on our parish
directory for 2021 in the next few weeks.
Please send any information including
ministry updates that you would like
included in the parish directory to
Maureen O’Reilly in the parish office,
[email protected]. Don’t
forget to send any address or phone
number changes as well. Thank you.
“Throughout
salvation
history, God has welcomed
repentant sinners with special joy.
Jesus concludes the parable of the
lost sheep with these words: ‘there
will be more joy in heaven over one
sinner who repents than over
ninety-nine righteous people who
have no need of repentance’ (Lk
15:7)*.”

As we near the fall
months, the Covid-19
virus continues to
dramatically alter
everyday living. Our
St. Louis council is still
recommending suspended ‘in-
person home visits’ to our
neighbors in need. However, we
are making phone calls and ‘virtual
visits.’ Thanks to your generous
donations we are able to help our
neighbors pay housing, utility and
many other bills. If you or someone
you know needs help with food or
financial assistance, please call our
St. Vincent de Paul office phone at

Stephen Ministry
Encourage One Another
In I Thessalonians 5,
Paul writes,
“Therefore encourage
one another and build each other
up... Encourage the timid, help the
weak, be patient with everyone.”
God has called us to build up and
encourage one another. For those
who are experiencing difficult
times, our Stephen Ministers can
provide the care and support
needed. If you would like to know
more about this care giving
ministry, call Anne Grant,
636-399-7633 or Jerry Nash,
636-386-3650.

Spiritual Ponderings
Wrestling with God
This month, I have been sharing some insights that I have gained from reading: “Wrestling
with God: Finding Hope and Meaning in our Daily Struggle to Be Human,” written by Father
Ronald Rolheiser. This week I will continue to share some reflections from the book. Quotes
from the book will be in bold and my commentary will be in the normal font.
And so a healthy spirituality needs to honor both the senses and the spirit. The ordinary
pleasures of life can be deep or shallow, more mystical or more mammal, depending upon
how much we honor what’s spirit and what’s angel within us. Conversely, our
spirituality and our prayer lives can be real or more of a fantasy, depending upon how
much we incarnate them in what’s sensual and what’s mammal within us.
I truly believe that we human beings learn through our senses. I know that there are other
philosophers and thinkers out there that have other ideas, but they have not convinced me to
move away from how St. Thomas talked about human learning. The Catholic liturgy speaks to
us through the five senses to unveil the mysteries that our senses cannot comprehend. In the
same way, I need to make my love for others tangible. For example, I can say that I love my
mother, but if I do not spend time with her, it is a lie. I may say that I have a love for the poor,
but if I do not do something to help them then I have proven that I do not.
For everyone who is emotionally healthy and honest, there will be a lifelong tension
between the seductive attractions of this world and the lure of God.
In their book: The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the Search for Meaning, Ernest Kurtz &
Katherine Ketcham speak of spirituality in the following terms: According to the way of life that
flows from this insight, it is only by ceasing to play God, by coming to terms with errors and shortcomings, and
by accepting the inability to control every aspect of their lives that alcoholics (or any human beings) can find the
peace and serenity that alcohol (or other drugs, or sex, money material possessions, power or privilege) promise
but never deliver.
My major choices in life incarnate and radiate a great tension, because I’ve tried to be true
to a double primordial branding inside me, the pagan and the divine.
A priest friend of mine from another diocese was once asked when he decided to become a
priest. I remember thinking his answer sounded very insightful when he responded, “this
morning.” Each morning he has to make the choice to be a priest of God or go do something
else. It was a little bit of a shock when a few years later he told me that he decided not to be a
priest anymore. He had slowly stopped living out his faith which led to bad decisions thus
resulting in his meeting a woman and deciding to marry her. I believe that I have learned from
his story because I work hard to develop good relationships with others and this is made real
through my actually sitting down to pray.
Another person that I knew used to be fond of telling the joke about the guy who prays in the
back of Church asking God to help him win the lottery. Week after week the man comes in
and finally God gets annoyed and responds, “at least meet me half way and buy a lottery
ticket.” God desires to help us grow but we need to work with Him and make the changes
that he calls us to make.
We can deal with almost everything except fear…Fear can render us impotent. But
naming it properly, recognizing where that symptom belongs and how powerless it leaves
us, can help us to live with it, without sadness, and anger.
Fear is the absence of trust. I sometimes wonder if the first sin was not disobedience (eating
the fruit) but rather not trusting in God. God gave Adam and Eve everything that they could
want but they still feared that God did not love them when they were questioned by the devil.
If they had trusted God even though they did not understand the reasons for His rules, then sin
would not have entered the world. How often do we sin against people because we fear that
they may harm us or take something we value away from us? Herod had John the Baptist
killed because he was AFRAID of the crowd, he was AFRAID of his wife, he was AFRAID of
ruining his reputation. Pilate had Jesus killed because he was AFRAID of the crowd and he
was AFRAID of the Roman Emperor.
