Cox dished out 38 assists and five Ce- dar Ridge hitters recorded at least five kills. Cox executed revamped offense for second-year coach Eric Soto, who de- spite the impressive win said there's still room for improvement. “We introduced a new system after our playoff loss last year, and it is very complex," Soto said. "We have the ath- letes, but we had a lot of nervous energy in our home opener and did not execute as well as we will in the future." Soto cited the defensive efforts of Alyssa Clark and Riley Cox, who com- bined for 30 digs and keyed the defense system, “Alyssa and Riley are special (with) high volleyball IQ and excellent court presence,” Soto said. "Alyssa not only plays her position but has the ability and skills to anticipate when free balls are not being tracking, and she moves in to make the play." Pflugerville (1-1), which beat Taylor in its own season opener on Monday, kept the first two sets tight but couldn't make enough plays down the stretch. The Raiders led 15-10 in the first set and were seemingly in control at 24-16 before the visiting Panthers made a 7-0 run led by kills from Camden Frederickson, Zahra Coates, Chelsea Okeke and Abby LaFol- lette. Cedar Ridge prevailed when the Panthers had an attack error on set point. In the second set, the Panthers held a 20-15 lead before the Raiders (1-0) ral- lied with a 10-3 run. Kaitlyn Werner col- lected three of her team-leading 10 kills in that spurt while Olivia Johnson, Ele- na Bilhartz and Ava Martinez each had timely kills. "Overall, we had a good first match, but the unforced errors and the efforts of a well-coached Pflugerville team kept the match close,” Soto said. Cedar Ridge settled into its offense in the third set, especially during an 11-3 scoring run to take control of set and match. “We finally connected with our pass- ing," Soto said. "If we can get the passes to Faith, we are pretty good." Bilhartz added eight kills, Nyla Lewis and Martinez finished with six kills each, and Johnson had five kills in a well-balanced attack. In other local action, Class 5A's Ann Richards beat District 26-6A's Del Valle 25-17, 25-21, 20-25, 25-13 as Nora Willis had 17 kills and served seven aces. Set- ters Isobel Ryther and Violet Webb had 15 assists each while Talia Tamez had 20 digs in the win. Lauren Murphy had 11 kills as Round Rock beat Cedar Park 20-25, 25-20, 25- 19, 25-20. Kate Alex led Cedar Park with 12 kills while teammates Lainee Roberts added 11 and Nia Cummings had nine kills. Dylan Gilkey had 25 assists for Ce- dar Park while Lauren Silver had 20 as- sists for the Dragons. Red-hot Rouse is 4-0 after Tuesday’s sweeps of Waco Midway and Lake Bel- ton. The Raiders opened the season Monday night by beating Westwood in four sets and sweeping Dripping Springs. TAPPS power Round Rock Christian Academy defeated Georgetown Grace Academy 25-12, 25-4, 25-11 as Savannah Johnson had nine kills with eight aces and Emma Owens had five kills. Ryann Holley had four kills and served six aces while Rachel Millikan had three kills and two solo blocks for the Crusaders. In Class 4A, 2020 state runner-up Wimberley opened the season with a 28-26, 25-16, 25-22 win against Class 5A playoff hopeful Bastrop. Paige Crawford led the Texans with 11 kills and three ser- vice aces. Bastrop got 11 kills each by Jasmine Creek and Emma Patmon. Tournament action gets underway this weekend, including the Jason Landers Memorial tournament in the Austin school district and the West- wood Warrior Showcase in the Round Rock school district.
