LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVES
Bernie and I each have been a part of The 5th Avenue Theatre for the better part of twenty years, and every single year, we are humbled, touched, and inspired by the families who make The 5th a part of their holiday traditions. Over the years, we have seen guests who came to The 5th as children become parents in their own right and who now bring their children (and grandparents) to The 5th at the holidays.
Families join us for experiences and memories that stay with them for a lifetime, beginning with the excitement a child feels as the lights dim and the curtain rises. We bring people together around wonderful evenings, experiences and shared memories.
Heartfelt stories wonderfully and wondrously told are part of the magic that bind us together at this time of year. Every year, we try to choose a musical that will delight people of all ages and fit into a tradition that spans generations.
Mrs. Doubtfire undoubtedly falls into this category. Wildly funny with unforgettable characters and some truly stunning stage magic, this a musical that, at its core, is about the extraordinary lengths we will go to for the people we love. It’s also a musical about hope, reassuring us that it’s never too late to step up, to grow, and to make things right.
Mrs. Doubtfire marks the 22nd new musical we’ve produced on our stage and will be the 10th new musical to move from our stage to Broadway. The world-class talent onstage and off has a small mountain of prestigious theater awards between them and have been lighting up the lives of theater lovers the world over throughout their careers. We couldn’t be happier to be working with each of them on this production.
But this production? The one you are seeing on our stage today? This is something special that we have created just for you with your holiday traditions in mind. We are honored to play a role in your life at this special time of year.
Heartfelt stories wonderfully and wondrously told are part of the magic that bind us together at this time of year.
FROM THE DESK OF BILL AND BERNIE

NEW WORKS CHAMPIONS
A special thank you to the following donors, who have made leadership gifts to support the development of our three new musicals this season–Austen’s Pride, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Bliss. We are grateful to them for their multi-year commitment, which allows The 5th to take substantial risks by producing new musicals on our mainstage. Their leadership provides these works the time, space, and audiences they need to make it to the next stage of their lifecycle.

The 5th Avenue Theatre Corporate CircleCorporate Circle Membership offers companies of all sizes theater benefits to our world-class productions and opportunities for professional networking, client entertainment, and employee recognition, while supporting The 5th’s education programs that serve 75,000 students statewide annually. Benefits include: premium tickets, private events, concierge service, special networking opportunities, and representation on The 5th’s Corporate Council, an advisory group of local business executives.
Contact Lori White at [email protected] or 206.971.7902 for more information.
WHY DID FREESTONE CAPITAL MANAGEMENT BECOME A CORPORATE CIRCLE MEMBER?
Many of our clients and Freestone team members were born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, so The 5th holds a special place for many of those who attended musicals as children. The 5th’s commitment to the next generation also aligns with Freestone’s charitable mission – “Enhance the lives of children and families in the communities we serve.”Through their educational programs, The 5th provides teens and young adults with the opportunity to explore their passion for the arts.
WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST ABOUT THE MEMBERSHIP?
Experiencing the creative process through musical theater is tremendous. Partnering with The 5th and their concierge service to share with our clients an experience they would otherwise have, brings the relationship to another level entirely. We’ve also connected with many like-minded individuals who share our belief in the importance of the arts in our community.
DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE OR EVENT AT THE 5TH.
This past holiday season, my father-in-law celebrated a milestone birthday. Debating how we wanted to celebrate, The 5th came to mind as a unique way to mark the occasion and spend time as a family. Three generations came together for a matinee of Annie. Our children then heard stories from our extended family about how Annie connected them to their own fond memories of childhood. It was a perfect way for the family to celebrate him.

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP
BILL BERRY (Producing Artistic Director) served as The 5th Avenue Theatre’s Associate Producing Artistic Director and Casting Director from 2002 through 2009, when he became the Producing Artistic Director. During that time, he directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times Footlight Award, 2007), Wonderful Town (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wizard of Oz, and Smokey Joe’s Café. In 2014, he
made his Broadway debut as the director of First Date at the Longacre Theatre. Berry’s directing work has been seen at theaters across the country, most recently at Florida’s Asolo Repertory Theatre, where he directed the new musical Beatsville. Berry also directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre, St. Paul’s Ordway Center (Ivey Award), San Jose’s American Musical Theatre, and Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars. From 2002 to 2009, he served as the Producing Director for The 5th’s education and outreach programs. During that time, he significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives, including spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Theatre Awards: Honoring High School Musicals. He also substantially increased the reach of the Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company throughout the Northwest. These programs combined now serve nearly 75,000 students annually.
BERNADINE (BERNIE) C. GRIFFIN (Managing Director) first joined The 5th Avenue Theatre in 2002 as Director of Theater Advancement and Development. She was appointed Managing Director in January 2010 and is responsible for the administrative, marketing, fundraising, information services, and facility operations, as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of Directors and
external affairs. During her tenure, The 5th has grown from a $10 million to a $25 million organization. She brings to her position 35 years of fundraising and arts management experience. Prior to The 5th, she served as Director of Development for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as for The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. Before moving to California, she served at the Seattle Symphony, where she is proud to have been part of the team that built Benaroya Hall. In addition to the Symphony, Griffin worked for the Tony Award®–winning Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as Tony Randall’s National Actors Theatre in New York. She began her career at the University of Denver. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. She is a member of Theater Communications Group, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, Seattle Rotary #4, and is a board member of the Downtown Seattle Association, Visit Seattle, and the Washington State Cultural Alliance. She has also served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Griffin was named one of the Puget Sound Business Journal ’s 2013 Women of Influence.
