The Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) helps low-income immigrants improve their legal status and works for more just and humane laws and policies affecting immigrants.

ILAP began in 1993 as a volunteer lawyer project providing assistance to about 20 asylum seekers per year. In 2000, in response to the rising need for immigration legal assistance, ILAP became a staffed legal aid agency. Since that time the organization has grown from a staff of two and a dozen volunteer lawyers, to a staff of twelve and over 200 volunteers.

ILAP is not eligible for most federal funding, so our support comes from the community. Thank you to the many individuals, family foundations, private and community foundations and civil legal aid funders who support us! Some of the ways we manage our financial development are through matching gifts, multi-year funding and recurring donations, all of which added significantly to our sustainability in 2016.

We are deeply grateful for the partnership of everyone who supports ILAP and look to our future together with great anticipation.

A MESSAGE FROM ILAP’S LEADERSL O O K I N G B AC K

Rights Coalition, we advocated for the retention of general assistance and other public benefits for asylum seekers and other immigrants in Maine. As the climate worsens, ILAP staff and volunteers remain committed to our mission of helping low-income immigrants improve their legal status and working for more just and humane laws and policies impacting immigrants.

Because ILAP is ineligible for most federal funding, we rely upon private donors and foundation to support our work. Thank you for your partnership in our mission!

Dear Friends,

During a time of increased hostility towards immigrants, ILAP staff and volunteers provided immigration legal assistance to 2,429 immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Maine during 2016. We had 100% success in full representation cases that reached a final decision. An additional 1,310 individuals attended ILAP’s education and outreach events and learned about the immigration laws and their legal rights.

ILAP is able to serve more clients through collaborations and the use of volunteers. In 2016, 140 ILAP pro bono attorneys donated 2,805 hours of their time, valued at $693,135, representing 149 asylum seekers. Dozens of volunteers also helped us conduct intake, complete immigration applications, and provide administrative and development assistance.

In addition to our legal services and outreach, ILAP staff also participated in systemic advocacy activities. Along with our partners on the Maine Immigrants’
