“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” – Aesop The SPCA Serving Erie County’s 2014 Humane Poster and Creative Writing Contest is looking for first through eighth grade students to participate in this year’s annual contest. This year we are exploring the idea that every living thing has an imaginary bucket that can be filled or emptied based on our interactions with them. We face a choice every moment of every day: we can fill one another’s bucket with kindness or we can empty them with cruelty. It is a profound choice that influences our relationships, productivity, health, and happiness. Based on the book, How Full is Your Bucket?* by Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D., we are promoting this idea and encouraging students to look for ways that they can become “bucket fillers” and improve their community for all living things. Since 1892, the SPCA’s Humane Education Department has conducted this contest for students in Erie County. Participating students have the chance to win prizes by demonstrating their creativity to write an essay or illustrate a poster to educate others about being kind and “filling the bucket of others.” We also have the Ambassador of Kindness and Humane Educator of the Year Awards which are great ways for teachers to celebrate the work of their colleagues and honor the humane work of their students. Lucy Lord, the founder of the Humane Education Department at the SPCA, created the contest to promote kindness to all living things. The contest has been passed down for generations. Judy Silver, a great, great, granddaughter of Lucy Lord, administered the contest until 2001. Even today, ancestors of Lucy Lord participate and support this program for the students, teachers, and families throughout Erie County. This contest has been a family tradition for years and is a piece of treasured SPCA history. *Copyright © (2009) Gallup, Inc. All rights reserved.
