The ABC's of Mercy www.marian.org

A = Ask for mercy. In Sacred Scripture, Jesus tells us, "Ask and it will be given to you ... for everyone who asks receives" (Mt 7:7, 8). In the Diary of St. Faus na, Jesus reminds us of this idea:

Souls that make an appeal to My mercy delight Me. To such souls I grant even more graces than they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion (1146). [B]eg for mercy for the whole world (570). No soul that has called upon My mercy has been disappointed (1541).

B = Be merciful in deed, word, and prayer. As we learned, mercy is love's second name. It's a par cular kind of love, a par cular mode of love when it encounters suffering, poverty, brokenness, and sin. But it's not just a movement of the

heart. It's not just feeling compassion for someone. To be true, mercy must also be put into ac on. So, mercy is really two movements: heart and arms. The "heart" part is the movement of compassion — it's something we feel. The "arms" part is the movement to alleviate the suffering of another — it's something we do. And what should we do? Jesus tells us in the Diary: I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: the first — by deed, the second — by word, the third — by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an unques onable proof of love for Me.By this means a soul glorifies Me and pays reverence to My mercy (742). So, mercy in ac on is mercy in deed, word, and prayer. And whenever our hearts are moved to compassion, wherever we are, we can always put this compassion into ac on either by some deed that helps alleviate another person's suffering, by some word that comforts or assists them, or by prayer. As St. Faus na wrote: "If I cannot show mercy by deeds or words, I can always do so by prayer. My prayer reaches out even there where I cannot reach out physically" (163). Of course, one of the great prayers of mercy, as we learned earlier, is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

C = Completely Trust. Trust in the mercy of God gets to the heart of the message of Divine Mercy, which is why the Image of Divine Mercy has the prayer at the bo om, "Jesus, I trust in You." Now, trust does not mean that we have license to go

about sinning as we please. Rather, it implies that we repent of our sins. Anyway, here are some beau ful quotes from the Diary that have to do with trust: Encourage the souls with whom you come in contact to trust in My infinite mercy. Oh, how I love those souls who have complete confidence in Me — I will do everything for them. (294) Why are you fearful and why do you tremble when you are united to Me? I am displeased when a soul yields to vain terror. Who will dare to touch you when you are with Me? Most dear to Me is the soul that strongly believes in My goodness and has complete trust in Me. I heap My confidence upon it and give it all it asks. (453) I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy. (687) Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trus ng soul. (1777) Now that we know our ABC's of mercy , we're all set to live the Divine Mercy message and devo on to the full. For more informa on on Divine Mercy, we invite you to visit TheDivineMercy.org

RENEW MY CHURCH—PARISHIONER SURVEY Survey offers people a voice in ‘Renew My Church’ effort By Michelle Mar n Staff Writer, The Catholic New World

As the Archdiocese of Chicago moves forward with plans to renew and revitalize the church in Cook and Lake coun es, all Catholics will have an opportunity to make their voices heard. As part of the “Renew My Church” ini a ve, the archdiocese invites all Catholics to respond to a survey about their parishes and the archdiocese. The survey is available online at www.archchicago.org/renew and it began Easter Sunday. Paper copies are also available at the parishes. “The archbishop’s desire is that everyone chime in and respond as much as possible,” said Father Jason Malave, co-chairman of the Priests’ Steering Commi ee for Renew My Church. “We want to capture people’s places of worship, we want to capture their hopes for the future, we want to capture people’s thoughts about what would make for a more vital church and parish.” “Renew My Church” is a mul -year planning process for the archdiocese to strengthen parish vitality and be er align its resources and its mission, with a goal of bringing people to Christ and helping them to know Christ more deeply, said Tim Weiske, director of the strategic planning and implementa on department. The survey is reminiscent of Pope Francis’ efforts to ask for input before the synods in 2014 and 2015. In the archdiocese, priests have been informed about the process and had a chance to voice their opinions, and about 2,500 parish staff members and lay leaders a ended vicariate level mee ngs or language-specific mee ngs. The survey is the next level of input. The survey should take 10-15 minutes to complete and will include ques ons ranging from where respondents a end Mass — both on a regular basis and any other churches they might go to — to what they think makes a parish vital. In launching the plan, the archdiocese acknowledged that circumstances have changed, with far fewer priests being ordained than are re ring and churches that once were full hos ng small congrega ons as the demographics of their neighborhoods changed. As planning moves forward, parishes will join together in planning groups to evaluate the mission needs of their areas and discuss how to be er use available resources to support the mission into the future. A small number of planning groups could begin as a pilot this fall. In his column in the Feb. 7 Catholic New World announcing the ini a ve, Archbishop Cupich wrote: “Just as our ancestors responded in faith to their dreams and built the church we have today, it is our me to dream big and to

take up this work. It will take a steady faith — a faith that is imagina ve, that strengthens us in the knowledge that Christ is

leading us. This faith will keep us together. It will steel us to make the bold decisions that will shape the church for genera ons to

come.”

When it comes to sheep, I’m pre y much clueless. Even though I have a BS degree in Animal Science from the University of Illinois, and even though I spent a fair amount of me on the south farms during my Champaign-Urbana days, and even though I got to know a few sheep people on a first name basis, I don’t really know sheep. And yet believe it or not, I actually knew a fair amount about them back then, when I was more immersed in their world. Or they, in mine. But I’ve long forgo en much of that insight. At the same me, it’s not that I’m totally sheep-ignorant either. I mean, I sheared a sheep once. That should count for something. I know “Baa Baa Black Sheep/ Have you any wool…” Heck. I even know the sheep password (“Baa-ram-ewe! Baa-ram-ewe! To your breed, your fleece, your clan be true! Sheep be true! Baa-ram-ewe!”) that Babe needed to say to get the sheep to listen to him at the end of the movie. Beyond that, though--at this moment in me, anyway--I’ve got nothing. When it comes to salva on, by comparison, I know as much as the next guy. Granted, my take is colored by my educa on and upbringing, but I am grateful for both, so here’s what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say: “Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salva on is necessary for obtaining that salva on.” And, “Salva on comes from God alone…” And, referencing the Dogma c Cons tu on on Divine Revela on Dei Verbum and Romans 1:16 (“For I am not ashamed of the Gospel…”), “‘The Word of God, which is the power of God

for salva on to everyone who has faith, is set forth and displays its power in a most wonderful way in the wri ngs of the New Testament’ which hand on the ul mate truth of God’s Revela on. Their central object is Jesus Christ, God’s incarnate Son: his acts, teachings, Passion and glorifica on, and his Church’s beginnings under the Spirit’s influence.” And yet, others don’t even subscribe to the biblical Jesus, let alone the historical one. And per one of those Jesus-does-not-exist websites, “Many currents fed the Jesus myth, like streams and tributaries joining to form a major river.” As a writer, I like the metaphor. As a believer, I reject the premise. But non-believers are certainly free to hold it dear. And as I’ve wri en before, these folks are actually believers in their own right. They just choose to believe that Jesus is a figment of somebody’s (or lots of somebodies’) imagina on. I choose to believe in him as the Risen Christ. Someday, we’re all going to learn the truth, but in the mean me, I’m taking the side of the angels. And on this Fourth Sunday of Easter, tradi onally known as Good Shepherd Sunday, I especially embrace the Good Shepherd image. “My sheep hear my voice,” Jesus says. “I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” I don’t know about you, but this is the flock for me. “Baa-ram-ewe! Baa-ram-ewe! To your breed, your fleece, your clan be true!” Believe it or not, the Good Shepherd is calling. I believe it. “Sheep be true…”
