System Analyst is the Person who plans and guides as well as implements and maintains a modified or new system

The System Analyst - A Key Resource The system analyst performs system analysis and design.

System analysis is the study of a business problem domain for the purpose of recommending improvements and specifying the business requirements for the solution.

System design is the specification or construction of a technical, computer-based solution for the business requirements identified in a systems analysis.

◦ The system analyst bridges the communications gap between those who need the computer and those who understand the technology.

Systems analysts are people who understand both business and computing. Systems analysts study business problems and opportunities and then

transform business and information requirements of the business into the computer-based information systems and computer applications that are implemented by various technical specialists including computer programmers.

1. Problem Definition(Investigator)

The systems analyst must have the ability to take a large business problem, break that problem down into its component parts, analyze the various aspects of the problem, and then assemble an improved system to solve the problem.

The systems analyst must learn to analyze problems in terms of causes and effects rather than in terms of simple remedies.

The systems analyst must be well organized. System analysts must be able to creatively define alternative solutions

to problems and needs.

2. Setting Priorities among Requirements

In any Organization, there are many type of users. Each user has different types of information needs. It may not be possible to satisfy the requirements of everyone due to limited availability of resources. So,it would be necessary to give priority to them. So,Priorities are to be set based on the urgency and importance of the user’s need.

3. Gathering Data or Facts

Initially a System analyst does not know how to solve specific problem. He must consult with managers ,users and other data professionals in defining problems and developing solutions. He uses various methods for data gathering to get the correct solution of a problem. To collect the data, the analyst does the following:

Interviews Personnel Prepares Questionnaires Observes the current System gather forms and documents currently in use During fact fiding,an analyst acts as a researcher, gathering

facts, figures and documents and coming to grip with the entire scope of the problem.

4. Analysing and Evaluation

After gathering data and facts, study and analyze the problems, causes and effects. Then, identify and analyze the requirements that must be fulfilled by any successful solution . A good analyst rejects duplicate and unnecessary data and focus on important data.

5. Problem Solving(Problem Solver)

The analyst analyses and solve problems as well as pulls together other people’s ideas and fefines them until a workable solution is achieved. The System Analyst must evaluate the merit of such proposed solution before recommending one to the Management.

BACK

6. Drawing Specifications(Planner)

identify the scope and boundary of the problem, and plan the development strategy and goal to meet management’s objectives. The specifications should be precise and clear for easy implementation.

BACK

7. Designing System(Architect)

Once the specifications are accepted by the management , System Analyst is responsible for designing it so that management’s goal could be achieved . The analyst must be aware of the latest design tools for system design.System Analyst is also called Architect because he design and implement new systems.

BACK

8. Evaluating System

System must be thoroughly tested . An analyst must critically test the performance of the designed system with specifications. The time at which evaluation is to be done, how implementation is to be done and how user’s comments are to be gathered and user need to be decided by the analyst

9. Implement the New System(Motivator)

Finally, the analyst presents the proposed system to the management and the users. Here the analyst’s role as a motivator becomes obvious during the first few weeks after implementation and during times when turnover results in new people being trained to work with the new system.
