FALL 2016

Now in its fourth year, The Recording Academy’s Music Educator Award continues to recognize deserving teachers from around the country. Since its launch in 2013, more than 44,000 nominations for music educators have been submitted — a testament to the sincere appreciation many feel for the teachers in their lives. From kindergarten to college, this award has helped to not only reinforce the value of music in our schools but has also had a remarkable impact on the communities of its finalists.

“We invested the grant money in some needed sound equipment for our band and divided the rest amongst the elementary schools, middle school and high school,” said 2015 Music Educator Award recipient Jared Cassedy. “I didn’t view the money as just a means of supporting my own school’s program, but to also recognize the value and hard work of other music educators and their programs.”

Semi-finalists for the 2017 award were recently announced and the recipient will be announced in February 2017. For information about nominating a music educator for 2018 or to hear more from our past winners, visit our website.

MusiCares’ services traditionally fall into three categories: Emergency Financial Assistance, Addiction Recovery, and Healthy Essentials — each designed to address the specific needs of our clients. Through our financial assistance program we learned preventive care is one of the most vital yet cost-prohibitive services, causing clients to seek help when it is too late. In response, we developed the Healthy Essentials program to provide low cost or free health screenings, wellness-based workshops, and clinics. Last fiscal year, our staff hosted 259 Healthy Essentials programs, serving 8,856 clients — a 55 percent increase in the number of clinics compared to the previous year.

The primary reason for this jump? The GRAMMY Hearing Health Initiative.

Studies show that professional musicians are four times more likely to suffer from noise-induced hearing loss than the general public, and are 57 percent more likely to suffer from tinnitus. Only recently has the stigma around hearing loss and hearing protection begun to lift, prompting us to arm music makers with the right tools and education to combat an issue

that is 100 percent avoidable. From this the GRAMMY Hearing Health Initiative was born.

Comprised of clinics that offer hearing protection information, on-site hearing tests, screenings, and impressions for custom-fitted filtered earplugs, the initiative is growing at a rapid pace. From 2013–2014, 10 hearing clinics were held; the following year, the number jumped to 35 clinics. In our most recent fiscal year, MusiCares hosted a record 108 clinics across 18 states, serving 3,638 clients. Clinics are held year-round and, particularly during the spring and summer months, at major music festivals, giving us access to music people of all ages and genres.

“I think it’s a great idea to offer this to both crew and musicians on festival sites — the service is so convenient,” said one client at the 2016 Stagecoach Festival hearing clinic. “Sometimes it’s hard to get an audiologist to a venue on a show day and get everyone attended to.”

MusiCares staff has a presence at more than 80 music events across the country, and with plans to host an event in all 50 states this year, we have no intention of slowing down. Visit our website for a list of upcoming clinics and to learn more about this initiative.
