Manifesto on Love

Jonathan Ong, Violin Abigail Rojansky, ViolaDorothy Ro, Violin Jonathan Dormand, Cello

Described by The New York Times as an “outstanding ensemble,” the Verona Quartet, winner of the 2015 Concert Artists Guild Competition, has quickly earned a stellar reputation as one of the most compelling young quartets in chamber music today for their “interpretive strength… robust characterization [and] commanding resonance” (Calgary Herald). The Verona Quartet has performed worldwide in venues such as Wigmore Hall (London, UK), Izumi Hall (Osaka, Japan), the National Theatre (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Melbourne Recital Hall (Melbourne, Australia). Strongly committed to education, they have been on the faculty of the Indiana University Summer String Academy as Quartet-in-Residence since 2016, and various international educational residencies.

Out of the Ordinary

Guy Few, Trumpet, Violin and PianoMark Fewer, Violin Stephanie Mara, Piano

In their own rights, trumpeter Guy Few and violinist Mark Fewer are celebrated as “buoyant” (The Globe and Mail) and

“genre-bending” (National Post) performers. The immensely gifted artists come together with pianist Stephanie Mara for a diverse program that will sweep their audience into a multi-coloured world of gypsy folk, pure classical, and bewitching jazz. Join Few and Fewer as they weave their way from Puccini arias to Valses Bourgeoises by Berners, seamlessly pairing it with music by Gershwin and the famous jazz standard Round Midnight by Monk.

2017 Juno Award Winners

Four musicians with equally stellar pedigrees formed the New Orford String Quartet with the goal of developing a new model for a touring string quartet. Their concept has resulted in a quartet that maintains a remarkably fresh perspective while bringing a palpable sense of joy to each performance. The Toronto Star has described this outcome as “nothing short of electrifying” and they have been described as Canada’s best string quartet by CBC Radio.

Consisting of the concertmasters and principal cellist and violist of the Montreal, Detroit, and Toronto Symphonies, the New Orford String Quartet has seen astonishing success, giving annual concerts for national CBC broadcast and receiving unanimous critical acclaim, including two Opus Awards for Concert of the Year. In 2017 the group was awarded the Juno for Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble for their stunning recording of the Brahms Op. 51 string quartets.

Arnold Choi

Saturday, December 1, 2018 | 4:30pm

*Living Spirit Centre, 3018 Doan Drive, Regina

The Cecilian Chamber Series is pleased to present a landmark musical event of the Complete Cello Suites of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach began composing these works over 300 years ago in 1717. Due to the works’ technical demands, the Cello Suites were little known and rarely publicly performed until they were revived and recorded by Pablo Casals in the early 20th century. They have since been performed and recorded by many renowned cellists. They remain an enduring source of fascination, inspiration and consolation for students and professionals alike.

We invite you to experience the beauty and deep meaning of these important 17th century works performed by cellist Arnold Choi.

NOTE: This event will include two intermissions with food and drink provided.

Deadline for ticket purchase: November 23, 2018
