UK Bathing Waters Conference
Northern Ireland
Belfast 19th – 21st November 2019
The key role that Bathing Waters play in tourism and local economies is now widely
accepted. In addition, the benefits to physical health, mental health and wellbeing in
general of open water swimming and recreational coastal pursuits is increasingly
recognised to be of key importance. In an era of considerable political uncertainty but
increased public expectation, there remains the need to show exemplary compliance
with World Health Organisation and European standards.
The 2019 conference is being hosted by the Department of Agriculture Environment
and Rural Affairs (DAERA) in Northern Ireland. The aim is to bring together all the
principal stakeholders to help ensure these challenges are addressed in a timely,
innovative and cost effective manner.

Tuesday 19 November 2019
Delegates are invited to assemble on the late afternoon of Tuesday 19 November.
Three parallel workshops will take place at the Assembly Rooms, which are also the
venue for the main conference. A hot buffet will follow the workshops. The buffet is
open to all delegates (including those not attending the workshops) but must be
requested on the booking form.

Workshop A: Developments in Microbial Source Tracking 16.30-18.30
A technical discussion workshop for practitioners.
Attendees will be asked to submit in advance one or more of:

Wednesday 20 November 2019
The main conference will run from 08.30 on Wednesday 20 November through to
13.00 on Thursday 21 November.
On the evening of Wednesday 20 November there will be a drinks reception hosted
by Belfast City Council, followed by a conference dinner in Belfast City Hall.
Thursday 21 November 2019.
The conference will resume from 08.45 until 13.00.
There is no charge for attendance at the workshops, main conference or the
conference dinner, but delegates will be responsible for making and funding their own
arrangements for travel and overnight accommodation.
Booking is now open. Early reservation is suggested as numbers are limited to a
maximum of 180, and the special accommodation rates at the hotels are available only
on a limited allocation of rooms and for a limited time. In the event of over-subscription
the organisers reserve the right to limit places from each organisation to ensure all key
stakeholders are represented.

The Conference Centre is opposite Great Victoria Street Rail Station/Europa Bus
station where the express buses from both Belfast Airports terminate. The conference
hotels and City Hall – venue for the conference dinner – are all within easy walking

Reception and Conference Dinner
Belfast City Council have kindly made Belfast City Hall available for the conference
dinner. The City Council are also hosting a drinks reception for delegates prior to the
dinner.

Travel
By Air: Belfast has two airports: Belfast International and Belfast City (George Best).
Both have direct bus links to the Europa Bus Terminal opposite the Assembly
Buildings.
From Belfast International: Airport Express 300/300a runs every 15/20 mins. Journey
time 40 mins. Fare: £11 return (£10 if bought on line).
From Belfast City (George Best): Airport Express 600 runs every 30 mins. Journey
time 20 mins.
Budget airlines run to Belfast from many UK airports.
By Sea. Stena Line run passenger & vehicle ferries from Liverpool (Birkenhead 12
Quays) to Belfast and from Cairnryan (Dumfries and Galloway) to Belfast. Bus
connections run from the Port of Belfast to central Belfast.
P&O ferries run a passenger & vehicle service from Cairnryan to Larne with rail
connections to Great Victoria Street station.
By Road. Neither of the venues have dedicated parking. There are a number of
public car parks in the vicinity but they can be expensive.
