Dear Friends, We all know the old saying “Blood is thicker than water.“ I’m not sure where it comes from but it refers to something we all feel deeply. Our families are our most important ties. Actually, though, the phrase implies more. It goes to our ethnicity, our race, our religion, our nation. It’s a way of saying that when these bonds are attacked, we’ll all band together to protect what is dear to us. Water, in this saying, refers to the water of Baptism. That water made us brothers and sisters in Christ. It made us sharers in the life that binds us to all human beings because Christ is united with all humanity…and with all of creation. The life rooted in blood the life of the family, the tribe, religion, or nation has its limits. When it becomes ultimate, as the phrase says, then we feel justified to hurt each other. The life rooted in Christ is eternal. It can has no limits. The life of Christ extends beyond family, ethnicity, and nation because it extends beyond time and space. I wanted to meditate on this phrase because today, this weekend, we’re celebrating the Feast of St. Anne, the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. We’re celebrating the good generated by our family ties but also the greater good of the ties formed by water. At the time when Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, and Anne and Joachim, her husband, were living in Nazareth, small villages like theirs were composed of different family units, what we would call today extended families. These blood ties were what they knew most of all. They were so important that cousins and friends were often called “brothers and sisters.” It’s into this kind of setting that Anne and Joachim raised Mary, and Mary and Joseph raised Jesus. Jesus’ human feelings about his home town were formed by these relationships. So it must have been very hard for him to experience the rejection of his hometown, his relatives and friends, his “brothers and sisters,” at one point in his ministry. Blood ties had their limits. His feelings about being Jewish were formed by these same people also. It’s from the closeness he felt with his home folks that must have had an emotional impact on him as he saw the terrible breakdown of his people under Roman and Herodian rule, the different groups vying for power and influence. Blood ties had their limits. For Jesus, it’s these limits that seemed to cause the most pain as he traveled amongst his people. Why? I think it’s because of what happened to him at the waters of his baptism. There, if you remember, he experienced himself as the Beloved Son of the Father. Do you notice the use of family words to describe his relationship with God? In other words, if Jesus, a Jewish son and grandson, a brother of many extended brothers and sisters, was the Beloved Son of God, then so too, by extension, were all those in his village, his tribe and nation, the whole world. This is what Jesus envisioned because of what happened at the waters of the Jordan. Because he, as the Son of God, identified with all of us in his humanity, then we all became his sisters and brothers. In him water becomes thicker than blood. This family has no limits! We sorely need examples of people who live by Jesus’ vision, especially today. That’s why we here at St. Anne have been graced to have had someone like Lenora Mosca. Her outreach to the poor, to different religious denominations, to different age and ethnic groups, were her way of living that vision. St. Anne herself may not have fully understood the vision of her grandson, but, like Lenora, we must all do our part to build on what he inspires. Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

MEDITATION

Fishing in the Keep of Silence Linda Gregg

There is a hush now while the hills rise up and God is going to sleep. He trusts the ship of Heaven to take over and proceed beautifully as he lies dreaming in the lap of the world. He knows the owls will guard the sweetness of the soul in their massive keep of silence. looking out with eyes open or closed over the length of Tomales Bay that the herons conform to, whitely broad in flight, white and slim in standing. God, who thinks about poetry all the time breathes happily as He repeats to Himself: There are fish in the net, lots of fish this time in the net of the heart.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“There is a boy here who has five barley

loaves and two fish; but what good are these

for so many?.” – John 6:9

The miracle of the Loaves and Fishes is the

only miracle which is recorded six times in

the Gospel. It carries two important

messages. First, no matter how little we

have, we always have enough to share.

Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and

do great things with them if we are just

willing to let Him.

The Pope's intention for July: That political responsibility may be lived at all levels as a high form of charity.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS

WILL NOT MEET DURING

JULY & AUGUST.

How wonderful is the certainty that each human life is not adrift in the midst of hopeless chaos, in a world ruled by pure chance or endlessly

recurring cycles!...We were conceived in the heart of God and for this reason “each of us is the result of a thought

of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.”

Pope Francis from his encyclical Laudato Si:

On Care for our Common Home including a quotation from

Pope Benedict XVI

Page 4: Worship…storage.cloversites.com/stannechurch/documents/bulletin...water becomes thicker than blood. This family has no limits! We sorely need examples of people who live by Jesus’

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

We are grateful to the1,162 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $10,584.00 in the offertory and $2,674.00 through Online Giving offertory which

along with other fees and donations totaled $17,158.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $21,026.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR

2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select

the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
