ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA

On July 14th, we celebrate the feast of the "Lily of the Mohawks." The

daughter of an Algonquin mother and a Mohawk chief she was born in 1656.

When she was four years old her parents and brother died of smallpox epi-

demic. Kateri survived, but the disease left her scarred and her sight im-

paired. She was named "Tekakwitha,"

which means "she who bumps into

things." Kateri's uncle took her in, and

although she wanted to practice the

religion of her mother, her uncle dis-

couraged her. Despite tragedy, she was

a devout girl at a young age, often

building crosses from sticks in the

woods. Her uncle gave his permission

for her to become a Christian as long as

she did not leave the village. There, she

put up with ridicule because of her

faith. When she was 18, she began se-

cret instruction in the Catholic faith

with French missionaries. Her commit-

ment to Christianity and vow of virgini-

ty was misunderstood and ridiculed by

her fellow villagers. She escaped to a

nearby mission, where she attended

daily Mass, taught the children, and

cared for the sick and the elderly.

After a time, in 1676, Kateri fled

to Canada where she made her first

Communion on Christmas, 1677. Like

St. Kateri, God invites us to be faithful

to our commitments of faith and to al-

ways respond in love.

Although the last years of her life

were difficult, Kateri was known for her

kindness and good humor.

She died on April 17, 1680 and

was canonized by Pope Benedict in 2012. St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first

Native American woman to be canonized.

FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos

Our seven youths preparing for Confirmation have begun exploring the

subject of prayer. Like anything else in life, the habit of prayer takes some time

and definitely requires practice. The best explanation is this: “Prayer is bring-

ing your wishes and worries to God: Faith is leaving them there.” It doesn’t get

much simpler than that.

Much like many of our faith, the students possessed bits and pieces of

knowledge of the Rosary, but not necessarily everything, and even some of the

basics were missing in their understanding. Catholics pray the Rosary to honor

Mary and remember the important events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. It is

said to have been given by Our Lady to St. Dominic in the 13th century and is

usually prayed using beads. Some look upon the Rosary as just a recitation of

prayers but it is so much more! The prayers being said include the Apostle’s

Creed, Our Father, Holy Mary, Glory Be, and Hail, Holy Queen. The four mys-

teries of the Rosaries are the focus of prayerful mediation on specific days of the

week. These mediations on the grace of God bring to mind the life and virtues of

both Mary, the Mother of God and of Christ himself. Pope Pius XI said, “The

Rosary is a powerful weapon to put demons to flight.”

So pick up your Rosary and don’t be afraid to use it! It you don’t have one or

need a little help in practicing your Rosary see the lovely gift shop clerks for

their wide selection of rosaries for you to purchase and their booklets on how to

pray the Rosary. Arriving at least 15 minutes before weekend Masses will help

with practicing the Rosary as it is recited prior to the start of each Mass. An

extra bonus practice is available on Monday evenings at 6 PM at the shrine of

Our Lady in the back gardens of the church. Bring a lawn chair and practice

with some great men and women of our parish.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION CLASS: Our next class is Monday, July

16th at 6 PM.

SCHOOL BELLS

Sacred Heart

Paper collection: Our collection bin for newspapers, magazines and junk mail

is located in the corner of our parish parking lot. Please: NO CARDBOARD

OR PHONE BOOKS.

Open Enrollment: We offer schooling for Little Learners (3 years old), Pre-

school (4 year olds) through 8th grade in addition to before & after school child

care, CYO sports and a wide range of enrichment programs. Tuition assistance

is available. For more information or to schedule a school tour, call 313.563-

6640.

Box Tops& Coke caps: Please do not stop collecting those box tops and Coke

caps during the summer. They can be dropped off at the parish center or in the

collection basket at Mass. Funds raised from these two programs benefit our

students in so many ways, from the media center to the computer room to the

science lab to the gym.

St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bins: Located in our parking lot along Dart-

mouth St. are several bins for the donations of new and gently used clothing

and shoes for our St. Vincent de Paul Society. If the bins are full, please do not

leave the bags outside the bins as they are exposed to the weather and stray

animals and may no longer be useable. Thank you for your generosity.

Please join us on Monday evenings at 6 PM at the Blessed Mother’s

Shrine to say the rosary. You may wish to bring a lawn chair if you need to be

seated.

JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS

Pope Francis has published a new exhortation entitled, “Gaudete et

Exsultate” or translated means, “Rejoice and be Glad”. Don’t be fooled by the

Church formality or Latin. Pope Francis writes in a very simple and easy to

understand style for everyone—not just for theologians.

In this exhortation, the Pope reminds us that we are all called to holi-

ness, to become saints in our time. And becoming a saint, the Pope explains,

means to be ourselves, where we are called to be in the contemporary world. He

encourages us to be kind, to follow the beatitudes and live our lives in love, to

become “saints next door”. Pope Francis uses many current, down to earth ex-

amples of holiness such as caring for an ailing relative, visiting a neighbor and

speaking truthfully and kindly to others.

The Gift and Book Shop carries this exhortation and other books by Pope

Francis. We remain open before and after weekend Masses during the summer.

May you and your families have a safe and enjoyable summer!
