Sarnia Day Trip

At 8 a.m. twenty-nine members and friends left Devonshire Mall for our trip to Sarnia’s Starlight Summer Festival at the Imperial Theatre to see “You’ve Got A Friend”. Arriving in Sarnia around 10:30 a.m. we had time to do some shopping and then we were off to the Village Inn in Point Edward where we enjoyed a very delicious lunch. Then, off to the theatre where the wonderful Mantini Sisters and David Rogers thrilled us with songs of the 70’s celebrating music of ABBA, Elton John, Barry Manilow. Billy Joel, The Carpenters and more. Since all of us were familiar with these songs we couldn’t help but want to sing along with the entertainers. It really was a great performance and after the show, David Hogan, the Artistic Producer of Starlight, (from Windsor), along with the Mantini Sisters and David Rogers, met us in the lobby and thanked us for coming. We even took some pictures with them and that made our day. After a stop at Tim Horton’s, we arrived back in Windsor about 7:30 p.m. This will be another fun trip for all.

President’s Message

Since our last newsletter, RWTO has been very busy. We had a very successful Fashion Show in April at the Windsor Yacht Club; Connie Ashby organized the models, music and her helpers for the second year. Our Annual General Meeting in May was at TBQ’s Other Place where we had a former President, Gwen Salter induct the executive for 2009-2010. One new addition to our executive is Genny Rudzinski; Genny is our second Vice President.

In June, we had our second Tea Party for our 80+ ladies; this was held at Chartwell’s Royal Oak Village. Most of those who attended wore their hats for the tea party. It was fun for our planners as well as for those invited to this very special event for our very special members.

Our day trip to Sarnia was outstanding; we attended Starbright, at The Imperial Theatre. We saw the performance, “You’ve Got a Friend” with songs from the 70’s. It starred The Mantini Sisters and David Rogers.

David and the Mantini Sisters met with our group after the performance and told us that “The Heart of Broadway” will also be very entertaining. It will feature many familiar songs such as “Music of the Night”, “Old Man River” and “I Have a Dream”. On November 28th and 29th, Starbright is featuring a Christmas Show that originated in Stratford and will be in Sarnia. Some of you might be interested in attending one of these shows.

Please check the Activities Calendar for upcoming events and for information about our fall luncheon, which is the last Tuesday in September. Try to get your dues in as soon as possible; our membership number determines how many delegates we can send to the June Convention.

I would like to thank all of you who have brought food products, toiletries, new children’s books, old books for the book exchange and eyeglasses for Third World Countries. This is truly “Yours in Caring and Sharing”. When you attend the RWTO functions, it is like meeting with old friends or meeting new friends.

I would like to end with a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, “Many people will walk in and out of your life; but only true friends leave footprints in your heart.”

Looking forward to seeing you at our fall luncheon (lemon meringueor cherry pie?) or at one of our other events.

Social Concerns- Food SafetyAt the Provincial Council of Women’s Annual General Meeting at the end of April, a retired meat

inspector, Paul Caron, outlined many flaws in the Canadian food inspection system. The job of a food inspector no longer requires any hands-on experience. There are not enough inspectors to adequately cover the approximately 800 federally regulated meat-processing facilities scattered across Canada. The inspector responsible for the Maple Leaf plant that was the source of the meat listeria outbreak was responsible for six other facilities. Under changes introduced in April 2008, inspectors are now directly supervising only 25% of the time. The rest of the time they review company-operated reports.

A recently released report by Sheila Weatherill, an independent investigator, appointed by the federal government to look into the listeria outbreak, urges the government to review the training of CFIA inspectors and make sure the system is properly resourced.

RWTO Convention – Mississauga 2009

Attending the 53rd Annual AGM from Windsor/Essex County as our delegates were: Emy McBride, Valerie Luscott, Brenda Irving, Linda White, JoAnne Duffy and myself, Freddie Beekuis. Barbara Hunter, Janet McConnell, Lila McFadden and Eileen Nussey also attended from our branch.

On June 2nd, there were Networking Sessions from 3:30-4:30; some delegates attended the session “Passing on the Positive”. We were welcomed to the evening dinner by Phyllis Robinson, the President of the Mississauga branch and her members singing, “Welcome to Mississauga”. There were greetings brought by several representatives. One amazing speaker was the Mayor of the city of Mississauga, HazelMcCallion. The President of RWTO, Carol Watson, also addressed the assembly. The evening ended with a choir called Justus; everyone enjoyed their performance.

On June 3rd and 4th, we attended business meetings. The agenda included the budget report, program reports and the seven resolutions. The results of the resolutions will be in the next issue of the RWTO Connections. There was an election for the position of 2nd Vice President; Annette Rhodes was successful.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had the opportunity to go on a tour or attend a performance at Stage West. The afternoon session was followed by the banquet. Carol Watson and Lee Beech received Honorary Memberships. The entertainment was Dianne Dupuy, the founder of the Famous People Players. She shared her life story and a book she had written. A trip to see the Famous People Players might be an activity for our members next year.

For the final luncheon and program, Mary Lou Killen and Carmen Eaton joined our group. This was very special for our ladies, because our own Mary Jane Finn was installed as the Provincial President for 2009 – 2010. Her RWTO sisters from Windsor/Essex presented her with some gifts and wished her all the best for the coming year.

The RWTO Convention 2010 will be in London at the Four Points Sheraton on June 1, 2 and 3. Chatham-Kent, London Middlesex and St. Thomas Elgin are planning the 2010 Convention.

Tea Party-A Celebration for our 80 or Older Members

On Monday, June 15 at Chartwell Royal Oak Village in LaSalle, seventeen of our ladies ages 80 or older enjoyed a tea party in their honour. Many of our ladies wore fashionable hats making this a real tea party.

Thanks to our members who drove our special ladies and to those who helped with serving of sandwiches and desserts that were made by some of our members. Also to Gail Raymond who played some lovely music on the piano for us. The Chartwell staff made the whole afternoon very special by decorating their tables with RWTO colours of blue and yellow. Marg Campeau’s lovely table centerpieces accented the décor.

Our honoured ladies expressed their appreciation for the tea party as they left with a flower, a small box of chocolates and small plates of sandwiches and desserts.

It really was a delightful afternoon and we all look forward to next year’s tea party.
