PhilosophyWe believe:

- children have a right to learn through play in a healthy enrich environment - Everyone is unique and will be treated as such- We recognize that not all children have the same needs- Parents/guardians have right to leave their child/ren in a safe and caring environment- And everyone has the right to a happy environment

Staff

Danica Kennedy is the owner and director of AreaKids. She has received her ECE in 1999 and moved to Penticton. She has extensive knowledge as an ECE and running a daycare. With the help of her partner she has achieved her dream of owning and operating her own daycare center.

All staff have either their ECE or ECE assistant status, a clean criminal record and first aid. The primary goal of the staff is to ensure health and safety of all children, provide a fun play base learning experience and work on skills needed for kindergarten.

AreaKids is a 3-5 program that follows all licensing regulations with emphasis on health and safety in a preschool atmosphere. Each day children will be exposed to many experiences such as art, social, math, music and science. Staff will make each day a positive learning experience with the influence of the children.

AreaKids is open from Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 5:15 excluding statutory holidays.

Payments

An invoice will be provided to each enrolled family each month. Fees are paid on or before the first of each month. If fees are not paid at this time, a $25 late fee will be applied. If fees are not paid by the third of the month, service will be suspended until amounts are paid. It is the responsibility of the individual who are on subsidy to keep subsidy current. If subsidy is not renewed you are responsible to pay the daycare monthly fee and when the money is deposited into AreaKids account the money will be reimbursed back.

AreaKids accepts cash, e-transfers and cheques. Postdated cheques are a great way to keep your account current. All posted dated cheques will be kept in a safe place in a lock box. Invoices will be marked for those who have paid with a postdated cheque. If the office has run out of cheques your invoice will remain unmarked with a message on it that the office is out of cheques. There will be a $25 charge for any NSF cheques.

In the event service is ending, all unused cheques will be returned to the families. As well, a tax receipt will be issued.

Tax receipts will be issued to the enrolling member in February each year. There will be a $5.00 fee for any reissued receipt.

AreaKids has been accepted to participate in the child care reduction initiative. What this means is, child care fees have been reduced according to the age of the child and the amount of days of the week they are attending. The fee chart has reflected the new lower prices.

30-36 months 3-51 day $130 $170 2 days $250 $310 3 days $365 $4554 days $472 $590 5 days $650 $750 Drop in rate $55 $50

There are no refunds for statutory holiday, children’s sick days or family holidays. Prices are based on a 20 day month. AreaKids will be closed between Christmas and New Year’s. If statutory holiday falls on the weekend, AreaKids will be closed on the following work day.

Remembrance DayChristmas Day

Boxing Day

AreaKids requires one months’ notice in writing for schedule changes or termination of service. One month’s fee in lieu of written notice will also be accepted.

Repayment Agreement

If AreaKids terminates services one months’ notice will be provided or return of unused fees will be given back. If AreaKids is closed due to destruction due to fire, flood, or any other forces that has deemed the building unsafe, any remaining fees will be returned upon insurance pay out. Unfortunately, minimal notice if any will be given. Upon scheduled closure such as planned power outage, AreaKids will give as much notice as the center was given, no fees will be returned unless the outage is 5 days or longer. In the event that AreaKids is no longer going to continue operating and if possible, 3 months’ notice will be given or at a minimum 1 months notice.

No fees will be returned to families due to child sickness, days off or family vacations. Staff’s vacation and or sick days will not affect the center’s openness.

Enrollment

Upon enrollment there will be a one-time $25 registration fee on your first months invoice. On or before your child’s first day at AreaKids, all registration forms including a copy of the child’s immunization, and the first months fees with the registration fee needs to be in the office before your child can be left for the day.

A $100 deposit is required to secure a spot once it has been given. This amount will hold the spot and will be applied on the first month’s fee. If after accepting the spot and paying the deposit the spot is no longer needed, the deposit is forfeited.

Each child will need, appropriate outside clothes, inside shoes- slippers, crocs, running shoes, several changes of clothes including socks and a healthy lunch with snacks. If supplies are not adequate for the day, you may be receiving a phone call to bring the items needed to make you child comfortable.

Drop off

For staffing purposes we would like to know when you are going to drop off and pick up your child/ren. This is not written in stone and families are not held to the times provided it is strictly for staffing. It is understandable that schedules change and children will need to be dropped off earlier or later than what was originally discussed, all we ask that you give notice to a caregiver so our schedules can be adjusted.

If a child is not coming in for the day please contact the center and let us know. We don’t want to worry.

4

AreaKids Daycare Handbook

Each child will be given a cubby to put their items in for the day. We ask that if things do not fit in the cubbies please take them home. We have limited storage space. Before leaving, make sure your child is comfortable, say good bye and sign them in. It is in our experience that prolonged good byes are hard on the child and at times the one who is dropping off. It is also very important that you don’t sneak out but rather tell them you are leaving regardless of the emotional state. This lets the child know that you have not abandoned them and you or someone else will be coming back for them.

Snacks and Meals

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide healthy food choices in accordance with the Canada Food Guide and ensure there is enough for the day. We understand that food intake can be difficult and tastes changes daily. In our experience providing a variety of different healthy choices such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy can help with picky eaters. We ask that parents provide a water bottle with a protected mouth piece every day. When the bottle is emptied, staff will fill the bottle up. AreaKids will send home food items such as pop, chips, candy and any peanut products. In order to keep children safe, AreaKids is a peanut free center.

AreaKids believe that all children should be safe from food allergens and may ban other items if there is a life threatening condition.

We believe that meal time is a social, stress free event. We understand that the child may have just eaten at home, or are not ready for snack. Children will not be forced to eat rather they will be encouraged to sit and socialize. Staff will attend to the needs of the children and then sit with them modeling good eating habits, encouraging socialization, scanning for choking hazards, safe eating- not walking with food in their mouths and making meal time enjoyable.

In the event a child has not been provided enough snacks for the day, the center will have food items on hand to supplement their lunch kits. Such items will be cereal bars or fresh fruit etc. If AreaKids needs to supplement your child’s lunch kit a note will be placed in the lunch box indicating more choices are needed and what AreaKids provided that day.

In the event that a food item was provided to the children a notice will be put up. Some things may include a birthday cupcake or other birthday treats, Tim Bits and so on. Providing birthday treats or other seasonal treats is not necessary but we understand the importance of them.

From time to time, the children at AreaKids will be participating in a cooking activity, for example, baking such things as apple crisp, Mother’s day gifts, Father’s day gifts, soup and so on. These activities promotes math, science, socialization, creativity, turn taking, and general interest in food preparation which will hopefully support healthy eating or in some cases, eating/trying new foods.

All children will wash their hand using the proper washing techniques of, wetting hands, making bubbles with the soap for 15 seconds, rinsing, drying hands with a one-time used paper towel, turning water off with paper towel, before any meal time or cooking time.

Staff, will use the three step method of washing the tables with soap and water, rinse and bleach before and after any meal time and or cooking activity.

Toileting

We understand that toilet accidents with children 3-5 happen from time to time and the staff are happy to assist children with these accidents. The dignity of the child will always be considered with handling these situations. A staff member will meet or walk the child into the washroom where staff will remove soiled or wet clothing and put it in a bag. The staff will wipe down the child’s legs, if wet, and wipe any mess from their body that needs cleaning. However, the 3-5 program cannot accept children who are not fully potty trained which includes bowel movements. The program cannot accept children who are in a diaper or pull up without a medical diagnoses. At this time, a discussion will occur about the medical diagnoses prior to enrollment where a trial time may be suggested.

If diapering is required, a diaper mat will be put on the floor of the men’s washroom to ensure privacy. Any diapering supplies will be stored in a tote bag provided by the family to be stored under the men’s washrooms sink.

All children will be encouraged to use the toilet before or after a meal time. A staff member will be monitoring the bathroom activities to ensure privacy-no peeking, assist with cleaning bottoms, and assisting with proper handwashing.

Rest

It is required that all children have a rest or down time during the day. Every day after lunch, every child will receive a clean sanitized cot or mat with a clean sheet to rest their bodies on. The environment will be set up in such a way that each child has the opportunity to either rest or sleep for approximately 1.5 hours. Children who do not require a nap, will be given books or puzzles on their beds for the half hour until it is time for quiet time activities. After a half hour, those children who are not sleeping will get up and do quiet activities such as books, puzzles, planned activities. This time is a great time for staff to work one on one with children building the necessary skills needed for the future.

Children who are 30 months to 3 years old will have rest time in the tent. 1 staff will remain in the tent until the children are asleep. The zippered screen and door flaps will remain open to ensure visibility and allows the child to independently exit the sleeping area when awake. The rest of the group will have a rest just behind the tent.

At no time will a child be denied sleep, toilet, water or food.

Sickness

At AreaKids we understand that children can become ill at any time. If your child does not feel well and cannot participate in the program staff will phone a parent to come pick up. While we are waiting for a pick up, your child will be made comfortable away from the rest of the children to minimize the spread. If the illness requires immediate medical attention, an ambulance will be called, senior staff will go to the hospital with the child and meet a parent/guardian there. At no time will the child be left alone.

If your child requires Tylenol or other non-prescription medicine to make it through the day, we ask that they stay home.

Signs that a child should not attend daycare

- Fever of 100 degrees or higher

6

Page 7: €¦ · Web viewAn invoice will be provided to each enrolled family each month. Fees are paid on or before the first of each month. If fees are not paid at this time, a $25 late

AreaKids Daycare Handbook

- Barking or persistent cough- Yellow or green runny nose- Runny eyes/ pink eye- Headache- Diarrhea- Listlessness- Sore throat or neck- Lice- cannot return until all nits have been removed- Scabies- Undiagnosed skin rash- Or generally not feeling well- Look at your child and ask yourself, if I felt like that would I want to

go to work?

Children who are not immunized will be removed if there is a communicable disease outbreak.

Children from time to time will require medication to improve their health. In order for staff to give the medication it needs to come to daycare in the original container that states what it is, the dosage, and who prescribed it. A medical request form will need to be filled out which includes when the medicine is to be administered, how much and any other important information.

If your child has a sever allergy that requires an epipen or an inhaler, additional information will be needed on a supplementary form where symptoms to be aware of in the event they require the medication.

All medications other than those required in a life emergency will be kept in a lock box. Medication that is required in an emergency situation will be keep in an adult accessible spot such as on top of cubbies. All emergency medication will travel with the child in the first aid backpack if and when the group leaves the premise.

Screen time

It has been recommended that screen time for children is limited. Children will not have access to cell phones, tablets and or computers. If we do watch a show it will be limited to not more than 30 minutes a day.

Active Play

The children will have at a minimum of 60 minutes of active play. From 3 pm to 4 pm the children will enjoy playing outside on a green space.

2 staff will bring 16 children down the stairs to the appropriate active play space outside. The 3 rd staff will bring the remaining children on the elevator with a bin of toys. Some items that will be provided to play with in this space will include but not limited to, balls, skipping ropes, hula hoops.

The first group staff will do a ground check as they are arranging the perimeter using colourful cones. The area will include the covered cement area-which offers shade in the warmer months and some grass area. Again, the elevator staff will bring a bin of equipment with them which will include, bubbles,

AreaKids Daycare Handbook

trucks, chalk, balls etc. Again, the first part of outside will be a planned activity to encourage movement that gets the children huffing and puffing such as tag, duck duck goose, building snowmen in the snow, hop scotch, in field nature walk.

All children will be encouraged to use the washroom prior to leaving the center. In the event that someone needs to use the washroom, 1 staff will take the appropriate amount of children to satisfy ratios to the washroom upstairs- using the elevator.

All children prior to exiting the center will have a bright yellow safety vest to ensure visibility at all times. Before returning to the center, a head count will be done with reference to the sign in sheet.

It has been observed that the outside fields are in use by the public between 2pm and 3pm and 4 pm and 5 pm. AreaKids will use the space between these times weather permitting.

The storage of outside toys will be in a large bin such as a never used garbage can on wheels and stored beside the cubbies or outside on the deck.

Indoor Soccer field

The Adidas Sports Plex has graciously donated 1 hour a day for AreaKids to use between 10:00-11:00. The group will use the same exiting and washroom strategy in active play when leaving the center and entering the indoor soccer field. Once inside the netted area of the field, the children will line up to be told the rules while in the arena: No leaving the netted area. Area for usage is up to the middle center line. As well, the planned activity will be presented. While this is going on, 1 staff will set up cones along the center line for a visual boundary.

Pick Up

Children will only be released to those individuals that are provided on the pick-up list. For the first several times, staff will ask for identification. Anyone who is not on the pick-up list will be denied access. If it is an emergency, written permission is required, either in the form of an e-mail, fax or a text. Verbal authorization on the phone will not be accepted- permission must be in writing.

If there is someone who is not allowed to pick up your child, a photo of the person needs to be placed in the file with instructions to what you would like us to do in the event that this person shows up.

The staff at AreaKids will happily care for your child until 5:15. After which time a late fee of $1.00 a minute will be applied. This late fee is to be given to the employee that was made to be late. If being late becomes an issue, other pick up arrangements will need to be arranged.

If a child is not picked up by 5:45 the Ministry for Children and Families will be called 250-770-2200 After Hours Lines: 1-800-663-9122 ANY TIME CALL HELP LINE: 310-1234

If the staff at AreaKids suspect that the person who is picking up the child is not capable to safely transport the child due to intoxication either from alcohol or drugs the staff will not release the child until a suitable solution is arranged such as calling a cab, someone from the pickup list, the other parent etc. If a safe solution cannot be made and the safety of the child is in jeopardy staff will call 911 to stop the intoxicated person.

Guiding Children’s Behaviour

8

Page 9: €¦ · Web viewAn invoice will be provided to each enrolled family each month. Fees are paid on or before the first of each month. If fees are not paid at this time, a $25 late

AreaKids Daycare Handbook

The dignity of the child will be considered when guiding their behaviour. The staff will not, use any corporal punishment such as hitting, spanking, or shaking. The staff will not belittle a child by humiliating, yelling or using time out.

Staff will instead:

- Observe the environment to ensure there is enough space and toys to minimize negative interactions such has conflict over a toy

- Give children expectations such as room or activity rules such as no spraying friends at the water table. Expectations will be enforced with a warning with a potential consequence if the behaviour continues. Such as ‘if you cannot stop splashing your friends at the water table then you will have to leave and do something else’.

- State guidelines in a positive rather a negative. Such as ‘Use walking feet-safety first’ rather than ‘Stop running’.

- Focus on the behaviour rather than the child. For example: Your friends are sad that you splashed them rather than You are mean for splashing.

- Make statements rather than asking. It’s time to use the washroom rather than, Do you have to use the washroom.

- Reduce power struggles. Offer first and second choices. For example: Do you want to put on your left shoe or your right shoe on first? Rather than, Just put your shoes on.

- Provide time warnings such as five minutes when the current activity is ending with a statement to what is coming. In 5 minutes it’s clean up for snack. In 5 minutes sing the clean up song.

- Ignore minor incidents. For example, if two children are playing catch with a soft inside ball and the ball accidently rolls or hits another child and the other child is fine, there is no need to intervene.

- Positive reinforcement for the behaviour or action and not the child. For example, Thank you so much for putting that away for me, that was a big help. Not- You are a good boy.

- Rather than shout across the room to get a child’s attention, staff will approach the child, get their attention by placing a hand on their shoulder, state their name, get down to their level, and speak to them softly

- Move their bodies between the children if a conflict is erupting and acknowledging what feelings the child or children are expressing- You look angry and expressing the expectations at the same time- You look angry but we can’t hit our friends. Ask them what happened, work out solutions together

- Redirecting. If energy is high with the noise level high, go outside. If staff notice a child who wants to be alone, offer art or puzzle at a table

- With every conflict comes a learning opportunity to come up with a solution together. If staff are always fixing the problem then children cannot problem solve. Asking the appropriate question such as what happened? How does that make you feel? What could we have done different? All parties need to be heard and respected.

- Making amend, which does not mean saying sorry!!! Ask the child how they can make the other friend feel better? Typical answers- give them a hug, ask if they are Ok, and if the child wants to, apologize. Staff can suggest maybe telling them you won’t do that again.

- If staff believe a child needs redirection a quiet place will be suggested where the child can get their emotions in check, have a chance to get away from the problem and where a staff member

9

can help through the emotions using calm, quiet tones. The child will be encouraged to join the group once they are ready with or without a staffs assistance.

AreaKids understand that some children require extra help. It is important that parents/guardians are open and honest with the child’s condition. This will help staff understand and better assist the child. As well as it will help in the creation of a care plan.

Child Abuse

The staff at AreaKids have a duty to inform if there is a suspicion of child abuse. A call to

Ministry for Children and Families (local district office) Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm 250-770-2200 After Hours Lines: 1-800-663-9122 ANY TIME CALL HELP LINE: 310-1234 Or to the RCMP will be made.

If a staff member has be accused of abuse, a report to Licensing Direct will be submitted. At no time will the accused be alone with the children and will be constantly monitored until the investigation has been concluded. If the abuse has been supported, the individual will be immediately terminated.

Emergency Plan

Each month staff and child will practice in a fire drill. One staff will take the first aid kit, sign in sheet, cell phone and sweep the space closing all doors. The other staff will calmly give verbal instructions to the children to follow them down the stairs exiting to the outside. Everyone will meet at the garbage cans in the parking lot away from the building. Once the group is safely outside at the meeting place, roll call from the sign in sheet will commence. Each child who is signed in and accounted for will have their name checked off. It is extremely important that you sign in your child each day!!!

If there is no threat, the group will return to the building to carry on with our day. If weather does not allow the children to be comfortable while waiting to be pick up, such as cold, wet, or extreme heat, the group will walk down Eckhardt Ave towards the Railway street. Crossing the street, walking down Railway street to 710 Kamloops Ave, Courtney Wachtler’s aunt and uncles house. Where all parents will be contacted by phone, text, email or facebook, for immediate pick up. It is extremely important to keep your child’s file up to date.

If the center needs to evacuate the immediate area, AreaKids will walk down Moosejaw St towards Duncan Ave turning right on Duncan Ave to Okanagan College, open from 7:30am to 10:00 pm. It took approximately 25 minutes to arrive at the destination. In the event that AreaKids is given 5 minutes evacuate the building, 1 staff would gather coats and shoes for the children, another staff the backpack with the first aid and rope in it, while the other staff is starting the decent downstairs. The group will met at the garbage can, put on their outside gear, do a head count, be put on the rope, and walk across the field to completely exit the grounds and head to the college. Once there parents will be called for pick up, and information put on AreaKids facebook webpage. Staff will stay with the children until all are picked up and safely with their families.

10

Staff will praise the children on their excellent behaviour on this adventure, answer any question they have, minimizing what is going on and ask who has another adventure idea for tomorrow? Express that everyone is safe and we did everything right. At no time will staff talk about the incident in front of the children or their fears.

Again, every effort will be made to contact families to let them know where we are and for immediate pick up. In the event that the emergency is so great that pick up is not possible, AreaKids will have enough supplies on hand for 3 days. This includes, water, food, first aid and toys. Staff will stay with the group for the duration of the emergency to ensure health, safety and comfort. After any emergency, staff will comfort the children, let them know they all did a great job and engage in activities that will decrease their stress level such as sing songs, play games etc. At no time, will staff talk about their fears, speculation or make plans within ear shot of the children.

Last resort Emergency Plan

In the event that the emergency is dire and evacuation needs to happen immediately, the children will be loaded into staff’s vehicles and taken to Danica-Ann Kennedy’s home at 1067 Kensington St. Children will be made comfortable and entertained until all children can be picked up.

The community evacuation plan will be practiced once a year.

Mitigating Center Damages

Every efforts will be made to find and relocate AreaKids Daycare to a new location if the center has been damaged and or destroyed due to an unforeseen event. Families will be informed of the efforts made to relocate through AreaKids Daycare website @www.areakidsdaycare.ca and Facebook posts.

AreaKids Daycare licensing officer will be notified immediately that the center is no longer in operation at the Eckhardt address and every effort is being made to find a new location for an emergency inspection and approval. If the efforts of the manager and or owner are exhausted and no suitable spaces are available, AreaKids will remain closed until the appropriate repairs can be made. See fees for payment reimbursement.

Management will do everything possible to get the center up and running after any damage done. If the damage is minimal a few day may be needed to restock any damaged items or make minor repairs. Any closure will be posted on the website www.areakidsdaycare.ca with reopening updates. If parents have any concerns staff and management will be available for debriefing.

With any trauma, children can react to it differently. There are different community resources available to help your child work through what happened. Some of these resources can be found at OSNS https://www.osns.org/, Health Unit 250-770-3434 and Community Resource and Referral at One Sky 250-492-5814.
