6) Don’t be afraid to write on the papers. Make jottings if they help you but make sure the answer is clear to read.

7) Neatly cross out mistakes. Do not use a rubber (Unless it is a question that involves drawing on a grid)

8) Practise your written methods of + x - ÷ regularly so that you gain confidence and speed in using them. It will help you in the arithmetic paper. Learn your times tables facts! They are

As you write the correct answer in the box, cross it

off the top.

TIP 2 – FUNCTION MACHINES – WORK THEM BACKWARDS TO FIND THE MISSING NUMBERS

#

TIP 3 – TABLES – CIRCLE THE BIT THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN AND WRITE ANY NUMBERS ON

2

To get the numbers before the ones written

down, work it backwards.

TIP 4 – READ THE UNITS ASKED FOR IN THE ANSWER

TIP 5 – LOOK OUT FOR ‘USE A RULER’

3

This question needs a number as the answer…

This question needs a word as

the answer…

Make sure you do! You will lose

marks if you don’t!

Tip 6 – Multi-step word problems: Do one bit at a time & don’t rush:

Tip 7 – Counting perimeters on grids – Mark off as you count!

1

4

Do the first part…

And then do the next part…

Look back at what you are supposed to have done before writing

the answer!

Mark off the sides as you count them

Tip 8 – Questions with mixed units – Make them all look the same!

Tip 9 – Venn or Carroll Diagrams – Cross off the numbers as you put them in.

5

Cross out the numbers as you put them into the diagram! Don’t forget the ‘outside area’ on Venn diagrams!

Tip 10 – Mixed fractions, decimals and % - Make them all the same

Tip 11 – Questions using certain numbers – Make sure you follow the instructions!

6

Make them all either fractions,

decimals or percentages.

Follow instructions

carefully!

Only use the numbers that are

there!

Tip 12– Using coins questions – Make sure the coins exist!

Tip 13 – Questions involving time – Use a number line!

7

The only coins you can use are:

1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and

£2

Draw your number line! It will make it easier for you to move backwards and forwards.

Tip 14 – Questions with more than one thing to work out –

Work them out and write the answer above them!

Tip 15 – Questions involving scales – mark on the relevant parts.

8

Write the answers to each

above them before writing

the missing sign in the middle.

Work out what each division is worth and label

the relevant part.

Tip 16 - Graph questions – work out the divisions & write the amounts on the bars.

N

C

Tip 17 – Check the units in the answer!

1

9

Always label the vertical axis and

write the amount on the bars

If you don’t give your answer in

cm you will NOT get a mark!

Tip 18 – To look for right-angles, use the edge of a square piece of paper.

Tip 19 – Tick box questions with explanation sections…

10

Put the corner of a square piece of

paper in the corners of the

shapes to check!

Do not just circle “Yes” or “No” -you will not get a mark!

You must explain clearly using the

information available!

Tip 20 – Number line questions – Label the divisions and then answer!

Tip 21 – Draw lines to the line graph to work out the answers

11

Label the sections on the

number line first and then answer.

Draw lines from the correct axes

to get the answer!

Tip 22 – Remember AB means the line which goes from A to B!

Tip 23 – For coordinate questions, draw on the lines to the

axes and then work it out!

12

Draw straight lines to the axes

and label!

Tip 24– For drawing questions, start by measuring the line and then draw angle!

Tip 25 – When you are asked to use ALL of the numbers, use them all ONCE!

13

Start by drawing the 8cm line and

then measure the angle.

Cross the numbers off as

you put them in!

Only use the numbers in the

squares.

Tip 26 – Remember your methods for questions like this!

Tip 27 – Remember how to read a timetable!

14

Look for easy ways – 10 x £2.75

Look for multiples – 10 x £2.75

Circle the bit you are interested in!

Remember how it works. This is the 7:43 train from Perth which arrives at Success Hill at 07:57

Tip 28 – Remember coordinates – across the corridor and up or down the stairs!

Tip 29 – Write on tables and charts so you have all of the information!

15

Add the information so you can answer it easily!

Put a dot where the vertex is first.

Tip 30 – Questions involving BRACKETS – you must remember the order of BODMAS!

Tip 31 – Look for important words!

Tip 32 – Look for equivalent fractions to make the question easier…

1

16

Remember – you will do the brackets first and separately!

The word DIFFERENT, EVEN and LESS THAN 20 are crucial!

Follow the rules or you will lose the mark!

Look for equivalent fractions to help you!

Tip 33 – Remember the rules for fractions of numbers!

Tip 34 – Remember angle rules…

17

First, divide the number by the bottom number!

Next, multiply it by the top number!

Remember – NOT TO SCALE means, you don’t measure it!

Remember – angles on a straight line add up to 180°

Tip 35 - Remember percentage means ‘out of 100’

18

Get the fraction to be out of 100! Then you have done it!
