COURSE DESCRIPTION

Explore the night sky and identify many of those shimmering points of light. Also gaze at those points with a large collegiate telescope. We will discuss distances and speeds necessary to reach our planetary and stellar neighbors. We will explore asterisms, constellations, the solar system, galaxies, and the universe. We will use sky charts, smart phone apps, and computer software to project the night sky.

DON KELLER has a BA in Creative Writing from California State University, Long Beach and has taught numerous classes at HACC and Millersville University’s Ware Center. He worked for many years in the natural foods business, where he edited two newsletters, The Whistlestop, for the herb tea company, Celestial Seasonings, and Natural Horizons, which received two national awards during his tenure. His first book is a non-fiction piece entitled The Gift of Stress ~ Life is Urging Us to Choose Love. The stressful moment’s ‘gift’ is discovering its underlying issue, fear, which can only be healed through Love.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Discover the six dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and social, and learn how to "climb up the wellness ladder" to health and longevity. Wellness is defined as a conscious, self-directed, and evolving process of achieving full potential; wellness is positive and affirming. The course includes sessions on nutrition, fitness (one session will be an exercise session to test fitness level), Ayurvedic balancing methods, and stress resiliency.

EILEEN WIEDER CRONE, M. S., is a Registered Dietitian, Registered Yoga Teacher and Certified Health-Fitness Specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine. She works as an adjunct professor at Harrisburg Area Community College, teaching nutrition, wellness, yoga, and fitness courses.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Book Arts will encourage you to tell a story and learn what makes a book-a-book. Collage helps you understand your thinking process, learn new skills, and have some fun. By using simple tools, writing exercises, and words and images, you can see what the page develops into, sparking new questions and possibilities. You will transform a discarded book into a creative work of art that encompasses a theme and utilizes a variety of media and techniques. Book Arts is an experimental process, a form of visual journaling using photos, bits of lace, buttons, where nothing goes to waste. Collage is a form of self-discovery that truly links the heart and mind.

MIMI SHAPIRO is a visual poet, mixing trinkets and treasures, words and images into an evocative body of work. Each piece conveys a sense of time and place as seen through the mind's eye of memory. She mixes reality and fantasy into a new vision. Mimi has taught in

We live in a dichotomy of both the work of our internal empowerment and the challenges we face in the society in which we live. How can we move in a way that holds what is most important for us while doing our work in the world in a just and equitable way? How can we ensure that we are holding soul, mind, and body in this journey? How do we make decisions based on what we value so that we can show up fully? This is what we will dive deep into throughout this course. At the end of the sessions participants will have created a guidebook out of the assignments for their continual alignment.

ANGELIQUE ARROYO is the owner of Angelique Guides: Infrastructure for Conscious Leaders & Collective Healing. She served as a trainer and program developer for the Latino Empowerment Project, and is a Community Presenter and Social Justice Trainer for the YWCA. Do you own a digital single lens reflex (SLR) or a digital point and shoot camera? Here is a course designed to allow you to take full advantage of your camera. Learn the intricacies of your camera and also learn the art of fine photography. The course will specialize in the technique of using available light. We will also experiment with different flashes, and learn about resolution and megapixel guidelines.

This class will teach students how to use various sources to research their family's history. The participants will be presented with tools and procedures to discover their ancestry lineage. In addition, students will learn how their DNA can help them trace their ancestors and how to access that information from commercial sources.

GERALD WILSON is an experienced genealogy practitioner who explores numerous resources to document family history. Mr. Wilson has presented this course to various audiences for the past ten years and emphasizes the newest online sources, as well as traditional methods of genealogy research. In order to fully experience the lessons, each student must bring a notebook computer, a tablet, or some other internet device.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will examine the Civil War battles and campaigns of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. One two-hour session will be dedicated to a study of Grant's traits, strategy, tactics and successes to see how he won the Civil War. The other will be a study of Lee's traits, strategy, tactics and results to see how he lost the war. Battle maps and comparative casualty statistics will be explored.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

ED BONEKEMPER, a former Civil War News Book Review Editor, has American history degrees from Muhlenburg College and Old Dominion University, and a law degree from Yale. Ed is a nationwide Civil War speaker, and was an adjunct lecturer in military history at Muhlenburg for eight years. He is the author of six Civil War books, including his recent The Myth of the Lost Cause: Why the South Fought the Civil War and Why the North Won. He served as a Federal Government attorney for over 34 years, including 11 years of active duty with the Coast Guard, and is a retired Commander in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Tai Chi originated as a martial art, but today it is recognized as a superlative health practice. Qi Gong, also spelled Chi Gung, is less well-known, yet closely related to Tai Chi. Both belong to the ‘Chinese Internal Arts Family’, each having their own methodologies for improving balance, flexibility, and coordination, as well as for health and healing. Beginning level, easy-to-learn movements will be presented in this introductory course.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

JIM KELLER has been studying Tai Chi under a number of teachers since 1991, including Master B. K. Frantzis and Frank Allen. He has also studied Qi Gong, Ba Gua and Xing-Yi. These other 'Chinese Internal Health Arts' have their own unique methods of healing and strengthening the body. Jim teaches public classes at various locations in the area and operates a home studio for private instruction. He specializes in teaching exercises for joint and spinal health. He is a certified instructor through the Wutang Physical Culture Association in New York City.

Meditation is the natural process of going within, allowing the mind and body to quiet down, and experience the stillness and silence that is the true basis of our being. In this class, we will come to understand the process of meditation both intellectually and experientially. You will be encouraged to practice at home what you are learning in class.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

DON KELLER is a writer, editor, and teacher who learned to meditate in the early 70’s, became a meditation teacher, and has instructed hundreds of people in the practice of meditation. Don says, “I have found meditation to be one of the most beautiful and powerfully transformative tools I have ever encountered. Just a simple procedure practiced regularly can have an amazing impact on all aspects of one’s life.”

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this class you will learn how to keep your own nature journal. Nature Journaling makes you a better observer, naturalist, and artist, and opens a world of beauty and discovery. You will apply nature journaling practice through observation, writing, sketching, and painting or photography to see more in the environment. Participants will practice in indoor and outdoor locations near the Ware Center, such as Linear Park, the Central Market House, the Wolf Museum Garden, Demuth Garden, and the North Museum. Class locations will vary depending on the weather. Whether you are new to journaling or have practiced for a long time, you will gain new insights from this opportunity to meet others interested in journaling.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

DR. CAROL WELSH, a retired professor from Millersville University, has studied nature journaling with John Muir Laws, Claire Leslie Walker, and Jonathan Alderfer, and has studied botanical illustration at Longwood Gardens. She has developed 4-Color Analysis, a simple practice for journaling which she has shared world-wide. She is a certified Master Naturalist and is enrolled in the Mount Cuba Native Ecological Gardening Certification Program and at PCAD in the social media certification program. In 2014 Carol began design work on a series of Nature Journaling Workshops on Sunday afternoons at Lancaster County Conservancy sites and a Saturday series at the North Museum, open to all ages.

Tap into your wanderlust and desire to reflect in nature. We will review and apply studies on the healing properties nature has on the human spirit. As you connect with these stories, learn about using mindfulness in nature to cope with life changes that cause us stress, fears of exploring on our own and traveling to new places. Learn safety tips for exploring the outdoors and discover natural spaces within Lancaster County, and a 2-hour drive, to begin your mindful healing journey in nature. The last class will be a guided hike in one of Lancaster County’s pristine preserves.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

BRENDA LEE SIEGLITZ is an entrepreneur, author, and public speaker who focuses on travel, grief, and nature. Widowed in 2008 at 24 years of age, Brenda is an advocate for sarcoma patients and the widowed community. She volunteers with the National Park Service, Lancaster County Conservancy, Pennsylvania Master Naturalist, and many others. She is employed full time for Where & When, Pennsylvania’s Travel Guide, and is the owner of Widow Voyages. Brenda won the 2009 Associated Content “Content of the Year” award, and in 2011 was named one of Wyndham Women’s “Women on their Way.” Her love and loss memoir, Ebb from the Shoreline - Finding Cancer and Courage, won 1st Place Editor’s Choice in Nonfiction at the 2014 North American Book Awards. Sieglitz became a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist in 2015.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this course is to introduce and develop communication skills in Spanish while listening, reading, speaking and writing in the target language. The course is designed for students with no knowledge of or less than one-year of high-school Spanish. Students will learn the basics of the Spanish language including the alphabet, numbers, greetings, and common vocabulary needed to engage in conversations with Spanish speakers. The course follows a communicative information-based task approach, which comes from the idea that languages are best learned when real world information becomes the focus of students' activities.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

JASIEL AYALA, currently a Spanish Teacher at the Alexander Goode School (K through 8th grade), completed his student teaching at the Lampeter Strasburg High School for students in grades 9 through 12 for Spanish Levels 1, 2, 3, and 5. Jasiel received his BA from York Colleges and a Masters from Millersville University in Languages and Cultures. Jasiel served in the Air Force from 1996 - 2007.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Spanish for Beginners 1 is an interactive introduction to the Spanish language. Students will learn pronunciation, basic grammar, and vocabulary needed to hold simple conversations. No previous experience is necessary to take this class. If you have ever been curious about learning a new language or plan to travel to a Spanish speaking country, this class can help you build your confidence to converse with others in the Spanish language.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

JENNIFER CARZOLA HERR was born and raised by two Spanish-speaking parents. Jennifer spent time studying the Spanish language in several countries including Spain, Puerto Rico, and Ecuador. In 1996 she graduated from Shippensburg University with a BA in Spanish and a BED in Elementary and Secondary Education. After graduation she gained experience teaching Spanish at the high school level before eventually teaching 5th grade in a Spanish immersion classroom. In 2002 Jennifer received her MA in Spanish from Millersville University. Now a stay-at-home mom, she has done some Spanish tutoring and teaching small groups of children over the years. She looks forward to getting back in the classroom again and using her Spanish-speaking skills to help others learn this beautiful language and culture!

Spanish for Beginners II is a continuation of the Spanish for Beginners I class. We will place more emphasis on developing basic grammar skills and learning to converse in simple sentences. For those who want to further their understanding of the Spanish language and culture, or for those who want to learn some basic communication skills that would be helpful while traveling in a Spanish speaking country, this class will help you gain some valuable language experience.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Spiritual Practice can be defined as the process of letting go of our limited perception of ourselves, of others, and of life, and embracing the deeper truth that transcends all limitations. We are all one in essence, united to everyone and everything. The Spiritual Practice incorporates any and all processes that open our awareness to that deeper truth, from meditation to prayer, from creative self-expression to volunteering, from a healthy lifestyle to an appreciation of the beautiful. In this class we will explore those processes that we are naturally drawn to.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In order to handle the stressful moments we all experience throughout our lives, we must come to the realization that our stress, that feeling of tension caused by the fight or flight response, is the natural consequence of fear. We fight with or take flight from that which we perceive as a threat to our safety, health, and well-being. To healthfully manage the stress, we must choose to expose and face our fears, and grow beyond them. It is this process that we will explore fully in this class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The slow motion, graceful movements of people practicing Tai Chi in a park or fitness center are unusual and often misunderstood by those who have never seen it performed. Tai Chi instructor, Jim Keller, will explain through lecture and demonstration, how Tai Chi is practiced, as well as the health, martial and meditative benefits of this 'Chinese Internal Art'. This one-session program will be an excellent overview of what to expect in a typical Tai Chi course. Also presented in this session will be the related health art of Qi Gong.

JIM KELLER has been studying Tai Chi under a number of teachers since 1991, including Master B. K. Frantzis and Frank Allen. He has also studied Qi Gong, Ba Gua and Xing-Yi. These other 'Chinese Internal Health Arts' have their own unique methods of healing and strengthening the body. Jim teaches public classes at various locations in the area and operates a home studio for private instruction. He specializes in teaching exercises for joint and spinal health. He is a certified instructor through the Wutang Physical Culture Association in New York City.

Embodying 'stillness within motion and motion within stillness', walk and stand your way to health, utilizing simple moving and stationary exercises from the 'Chinese Internal Health Arts' of Tai Chi, Qi-Gong and Ba Gua. In this six-week program, Dr. Frick will focus on some fascinating details of local history. Unknown to many, Lancaster played a pivotal role in the founding of our nation and in critical periods of history since then. In this series, Dr. Frick will introduce 18 Lancastrians who had a significant impact on the events that shaped our county, our state, and our nation.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

During his 45 years of service to the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, Dr. ROBERT FRICK served as a Teacher, an Elementary Administrative Assistant, a Principal, the Director of Elementary Education, the Assistant Superintendent, and, for the last 15 years as the Superintendent of Schools. A graduate of Millersville University of Pennsylvania with both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, Dr. Frick holds a doctorate in educational administration from Temple University. He has served as adjunct professor of educational administration for Temple, Penn State, Millersville, Shippensburg, and Immaculata Universities. He continues to teach school law and provide workshops for Pennsylvania school districts and Intermediate Units.

In this course, you will learn what weather maps, forecasts, and terminology really mean, and become familiar with the atmospheric processes behind the weather. Topics covered will include how to better understand weather forecasts, what is going on in the atmosphere to produce what is seen on a weather map, and why things like cold fronts bring certain kinds of weather, and an explanation of terms like jet stream, El Nino, and computer models.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

ANDY STUART graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor's degree in Meteorology. Outside the class, he made 5-day forecasts for various regions of Pennsylvania twice a week as part of the Campus Weather Service. He is now studying applications of weather to businesses like insurance and energy as part of a Master's program at Millersville University.
