Magazine Evaluation /I created a front cover and a double page spread for a magazine that I named luxe. The genre of my magazine is Women’s lifestyle which was targeted specifically to women aged 25 – 35, specifically women of ethnic minority in the C2 and D social grade demographic. This was because I wanted to appeal to another target audience and be diverse. I named my magazine luxe so it would appear as a luxurious to them which wold appeal to them as being young women, they would aspire to have luxurious items. I decided to followed conventions of magazine front covers so that my magazine looks professional. I placed my masthead right at the top of the page and I made the font large. This was so that my masthead would be visible from a distance to catch the attention of my target audience. I also edited my masthead into the image so that the masthead would be behind my models head to represent that my brand is well known. My masthead was made in adobe illustrator where I flipped the ‘E’ so that it was backwards, made it shorter and added a slogan underneath it to make my brand logo. /For my main image I decided to use a long shot of my model instead of a close up. This was as my magazine was about lifestyle so I wanted to have an image showing the models full body so it was relating to the cover lines. I took many pictures of my model doing different poses so I could choose one at the end. When taking the picture I used the light on one side of the model to create a shadow. This was as my magazine was a winter edition so I wanted make it realistic and create a theme. To create my cover lines, I looked at other women lifestyle magazines to see what type of articles they cover and how they lay out their pages. From there I got inspired with their cover lines. My main cover line was ‘Meet the fierce and fabulous Victoria in Exclusive Interview’. To make it obvious that the cover line was linked to the main image and the model, I made her name bold and added an outer glow to it. I also made it larger to show that it is one of the most important bits of information on the page. ‘Winter Wonders’ was a cover line that I put at the bottom of the page. As it was purple and it blended in with the background I added a drop shadow behind it so that it would stand out more. I enlarged this so that it was the largest text after the masthead. This was as it promotes the season of the magazine and creates a theme. Most of the text on the page is font style ‘Century gothic’. I used this font as it looks trendy and professional at the same time. Some of my cover lines were font style ‘myriad pro’. I didn’t have a specific font size for my front page. The colour scheme for my magazine is purple, yellow and grey. This is as these colours are colours associated with winter, which is the theme for my magazine. They also match the colours of the clothes that my model is wearing. /At the bottom of the front cover, I added a barcode onto my magazine and I included a website for my magazine. This is to make my magazine seem like a big organisation and working as a second platform for my target audience and a place they can go to find out more information. On the left side of my double page spread, instead of putting a title at the top, I added an image which took up a third of the page. This was so that my target audience knew what my article was about. Below this image I then added a pull quote. This was so that it would stand out to people skimming through the magazine. I also used a drop cap so it would have a similar effect to the audience. The colours that I used were an extend of the colours used on the front cover and from the image on the page. This is to keep professionalism and to relate the two. I added page numbers at the bottom of the page. This is to make the magazine realistic , following codes and conventions. //The background of my double page spread was made by myself using photoshop. I started by collecting single images of flower silhouettes and I then began putting them together onto a plain background to create an image by flipping and rotating some of the images. I changed the opacity of the flower designs to 5% so that my article wouldn’t blend into it.

This was so that my target audience knew what my article was about. Below this image I then added a pull quote. This was so that it would stand out to people skimming through the magazine. I made my headline on Adobe photoshop and on Adobe Illustrator. I typed in the text into illustrator and enhanced it. I then copied it into photoshop to then add an image to the headline. This was as it related to the context of the article. When writing my article it was hard as I knew what type of magazine article I wanted t write but I couldn’t find a specific topic to base it on. My initial idea was for my article to be about spa tips but then I noticed that it didn’t relate to my front cover or and there want an article. I then decided to somehow make the spa tips to relate to the article some how. Even though finally having an article, there was still a lot of space left on my page and I didn’t have any idea on how to fill it up. I then added more to my article so that I could fil up the space however there was still space. So what I did was I changed the layout of the page so that my article would take up the space properly. Feedback I got from my magazine front cover was that they like dmy main image and how I placed it, the colour scheme and also how I changed the sizes of the different cover lines. Improvements were that could have changed the colours of the coverline as the were abit hard to read. For my double page spread, the feedback was that they liked my layout and how I made my background although I could have written more for my article and included images during the tips sections for my target audience to follow.
