The events in Things Fall Apart take place at the end of the nineteenth century and in the early part of the twentieth century. Although the British did not occupy most of Nigeria until 1904, they had a strong presence in West Africa since the nineteenth century. The British were a major buyer of African slaves in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
