The Literary Heritage of Anglo-Dutch Relations 1050-1600Major Leverhulme Research project (2018-22)
Workshop 3 May 2019 10.00am - 3.00pm
Emmanuel College, CambridgeRobert Gardner Room
Plan for workshop
Each participant, if willing, may select some primary source texts in the original language and, if necessary, with translation to be read by all of us. We are thinking of any issues pertaining to Anglo-Dutch/Flemish relations in the Middle Ages and early Modern period, especially those of a linguistic, literary or cultural/historical nature.
Potential themes for discussion: literary influences English-Dutch (either directly or via Latin or French), multilingualism/multiculturalism, historical links (trade, church, historiography, intermarriage) material culture and its languages
Specific problems: how do we identify references to Dutch/Flemish language in sources that use vocabulary that might mean German as well.
Timetable chosen texts
By 24 April send your chosen texts (in pdf or Word) to the Project Administrator Dr Bex Lyons ([email protected]). Bex will collate all texts for the participants and make them available by 28 April.
