Having a Hearing Check

A Social Story

Sometimes people have problems hearing other people, or the television.

Sometimes our hearing gets worse as we get older.

Sometimes we might also get sore ears.

Usually people go to have their hearing checked by a health professional called an audiologist.

Usually audiology checks are done in a hospital clinic. Sometimes they can be done at home if someone needs this.

If I want, I can have someone with me to support me at the hearing test.

You should bring a list of medication you take, and any hearing aids you have.

The audiologist usually checks inside people’s ears by shining a light inside them.

Sometimes you put some head phones on and listen to sounds.

Sometimes you are asked to press a button if you hear a noise.

Sometimes you are asked to look at some picture pairs.

A hearing check will let me know if I am hearing well.

If I am not hearing well, the audiologist can help.

Sometimes people get hearing aids so they can hear people, music and the television better.

It is a good idea to get my ears checked by my practice nurse two weeks before I visit the audiologist in case my ears are blocked with ear wax.
