    Single-grade engine oils

SAE 30 or 40 single-grade engine oils to works standard MAN 270 should be used only if multi-grade engine oils are not available or if the use of single-grade oils is explicitly required.Heed the operating temperature range!

    High-performance diesel engine oils

High performance diesel engine oils in accordance with factory standards M 3275, M 3277 and M 3477have an essentially higher performance level than engine oils in accordance with factory standardsMAN 270 and 271.Especially in supercharged diesel engines, in respect of piston cleanliness, high performance diesel engineoils offer essential benefits in terms of wear and greater power reserves. Of course, high performance diesel engine oils are also suitable for unsupercharged engines. In the interest of greater engine life expectancy we recommend using such oils for turbocharged and non-turbocharged engines.

    NOTE

On high performance ships' diesel engines, under extreme conditions of use, deposits can oc

cur in the charge air sections.

This leads to a reduction in engine performance.

Therefore: Low deposit engine oils as per M 3277 factory standard are especially recommended for these en

    gines.

    Conditions of approval

The approval for engine oils is valid for two years and can be extended by another two years at the requestof the manufacturer / supplier provided that the quality of the oil in question has not changed.

Before purchasing a product, make sure that it is still approved by having the supplier produce the MANletter of approval.

    Engine oils without MAN approval

If, in certain countries, no MAN approved engine oils are available, then engine oils are to be used wherethe oil manufacturers or suppliers can confirm in writing that these oils meet the minimum quality levels ofACEA E2 (for MAN 270 / 271), ACEA E3/E5 (for M 3275) or ACEA E4 (for M 3277) or API-CF-4, CG-4,CH-4, CI-4.

When using these engine oils the oil change intervals given in the operating instruction or onboard servicemanual/service manual are to be reduced (as agreed in discussion with MAN Truck & Bus AG, customerservice).

    Engine oil additives

For MAN diesel engines only those engine oils are approved, which have been tested in accordance withthe factory standards MAN 270, MAN 271, M 3275, M 3277 and M 3477 and satisfy these standards. These oils are formulated in such a way, that they satisfy the requirements for the engines in every respectwhen the established oil change intervals are adhered to.

Additives of any kind that are added later to the engine oil alter the engine oil in an unpredictable manner.

Since the use of such additives can have a negative effect both on performance and the costs of

maintenance, claims made against MAN Truck & Bus AG on the basis of material defects are

rendered null and void if the damage can be traced to their use.

    Mixing engine oils

In order to prevent a drop in performance of the engine oil used, and thus a reduction in the oil change interval, only engine oils with at least the same performance range should be mixed.

Engine oils from various manufacturers can be mixed and are compatible if used for the same area of application.

Diesel engines with PM-Kat (particulate filter with catalytic converter)

Only those engine oils that meet the M 3477 standard may be used. In addition, only low-sulphur dieselfuels (< 50 mg/kg sulphur) that meet the DIN EN 590 standard are permitted for use.

Sulphur content in diesel fuel (outside EU countries)

Depending on the sulphur content in the diesel fuel, the oil and filter change intervals must be multiplied bya correction factor as per the following table. The oil and filter intervals can be found in the operating instructions or onboard service manual/service manual. The correction factors depend on the engine oil specification used.

Sulphur content S in diesel fuel Correction factor for oil change interval

    S < 50 ppm 1

    50 < S < 1,000 ppm 0.5

    S > 1,000 ppm 0.3

    Winter operation

As ambient temperatures fall diesel fuel deposits paraffin crystals which increase the flow resistance in thefuel filter so much that an adequate fuel supply is no longer guaranteed.

Summer-grade diesel fuel to DIN EN 590 guarantees cold-flow characteristics down to 0C, winter-gradefuel to DIN EN 590 to temperatures down to -20C.

Winter diesel fuels for which the fuel manufacturer guarantees sufficient operational safety above andbeyond the DIN standard must be used to ensure fault-free operation in winter conditions!

Aside from the Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) normally specified in the EN 590 standard, a low cloudpoint (CP) is also decisive for reliable performance (see figure).

Winter diesel DIN EN 590(16th Nov. - 29th Feb.)

    - Ambient temperature -

    NOTE

No fuel mixing! The mixing of fuel is forbidden. Therefore: If the cold-flow characteristics of the diesel fuel are inadequate or the outdoor temperatures are even

lower, we recommend fitting fuel filter heating. Before winter begins, drain water from fuel prefilter and fuel tank.

In countries where even lower ambient temperatures are reached, special diesel fuel (Alpine or Arcticquality) is usually available.

No fuel additives of any kind are required for the operation of MAN diesel engines if the diesel fuel meetsthe requirements in the above specifications.

Since by using such additives the performance, the exhaust smoke opacity, the pollutant emission

and also the maintenance requirement and engine life can all be negatively influenced, their use

renders claims on the guarantee provided by MAN Truck & Bus AG null and void.

Use of biodiesel (FAME) according to DIN EN 14214:

(FAME = Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) e.g. rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME)

As a general principle, MAN engines can be operated with FAME if this fuel meets the standard DIN EN14214 and has been made of rapeseed oil. There is currently no approval for FAME made of other substances.

    Common Rail:

    NOTE

Operation with FAME is not cleared!

Component damage on engines with CR injection. Therefore: No operation with FAME of engines with CR injection

  • Fuel

    18

Carefully read the instructions before starting any work! This is especially valid for the chapter on General Safety Instructions

A number of special features are important:

In comparison with diesel fuel FAME has less favourable evaporation characteristics. This leads to dilutionof the fuel and of the engine oil, a decrease in viscosity and finally to increased engine wear. Therefore the engine oil change intervals applicable for operation with diesel fuel (and also the engine oilfilter and fuel filter intervals) have to be halved:

These specifications apply equally to alternating operation of diesel fuel and FAME as well as for mixturesof diesel fuel with FAME that are not covered by DIN EN 590.

FAME gels at low temperatures, so we recommend using winter diesel in the cold season.

    NOTE

Operation with pure vegetable oil or an admixture thereof.

Component damage caused by all types of so-called alternative fuels".Therefore: The use of pure vegetable oils or their admixture is not permissible. Alternative fuels" that do not meet the DIN EN 590 or DIN EN 14214 standards are not permitted for

    use.

Micro-organisms in fuel systems running on diesel fuel and biodiesel

In diesel fuel and biodiesel (RME) there are micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, yeasts), which can proliferateunder favourable conditions. Water, which is encountered as condensation water in each fuel or storagetank and elements important to life in a chemically combined form, such as sulphur, phosphor, nitrogen, oxygen and trace elements are required for growth. Fuel additives can also contribute to the growth of themicro-organisms.Depending on the temperature, they multiply fast or slowly, which leads to the formation of fibrous fungalmeshwork, sludge and microbial corrosion. The consequences are: Rusting of the tanks, blocking of the fuel pre-filter due to rust and fibres (mould network) and the resulting frequent oil filter changes. This leads to a reduction in power and, in extreme cases,to the complete failure of the engine.

Remedial measures in the event of an attack by micro-organisms

In the event of an attack by micro-organisms we recommend you combat them by using the following disinfectants:

    Product: MAR 71Manufacturer: Schlke & Mayr D-22840 Norderstedt Tel.: 040 / 521 00-0Fax.: 0 40 / 521 00-108

    or:

    Product: BAKZIDManufacturer: Bodechemie Hamburg Melanchthonstr. 27 D-22525 HamburgTel.: 0 40 / 540 06-0Fax.: 0 40 / 540 06-200

Both products are soluble both in diesel fuel, biodiesel (RME) and in water. They form no corrosive combustion products. Due to their alkalinity, acids formed by microbial growth are neutralised.

    Application:

Fuel tank:To 100 Litres of diesel fuel or biodiesel 50 ml (0.05%) of disinfectant are added on filling. This process isrepeated a total of 3 times. The fuel pre-filter also has to be checked.

Storage tank:If inspection of the tank sump reveals no strong water or sludge contamination, flushing out the tank can bedispensed with. It is then adequate to dose the contents of the tank with 1 litre of disinfectant per m3 oftank content.

    NOTE

Operation with pure vegetable oil or an admixture.Component damage caused by all types of so-called alternative fuels".Therefore: The use of pure vegetable oils or their admixture is not permissible. Alternative fuels" that do not meet the DIN EN 590 or DIN EN 14214 standards are not permitted for

    use.

If necessary, contact the manufacturer (e.g. for information on supply sources abroad).

  • AdBlue

    21

Before commencing all work carefully read through the introduction! The applies, in particular, to the chapter on general safety instructions and he respective safety instructions in the separate chapters.

    AdBlue

AdBlue is a high-purity, synthetically-manufactured 32.5 % urea-water solution, as clear as water. Thehigh quality solution in the SCR technology reduces the poisonous nitrogen oxide emissions in the exhaustgas of diesel-driven commercial vehicles to water vapour and elementary nitrogen.(a natural component ofthe air). The high degree of purity and the consistent quality are only guaranteed through the use of AdBlue in accordance with DIN 70070. AdBlue is not an additive, but rather is carried separately in vehicles with SCR technology in an additionaltank provided for the purpose. In order to avoid loss of quality due to impurities and the consequent high cost of testing, AdBlue mustonly be handled using the storage and filling systems provided for AdBlue. If AdBlue is cooled below -11C, it freezes. On warming, the frozen AdBlue becomes liquid again and can be used unchanged without deteriorationin quality.Since AdBlue freezes at a temperatures below -11 C, and decomposes at an accelerated rate above 25C, this temperature range should be adhered wherever possible. AdBlue degrades in the course of storage and then no longer satisfies the requirements of DIN 70070. If the recommended storage temperature of 25 C max is maintained, then from the date of manufactureAdBlue satisfies the requirements of DIN 70070 for at least 12 months. If the recommended storage temperature is too low, this period of time is reduced.AdBlue can be exploited by microbes and is therefore very easily degradable. This means that AdBlue presents only very minimal risk to the environment. In Germany AdBlue is therefore categorised in the lowest water pollution hazard class 1. Due to its degradability, small quantities of Adblue can be emptied into the sewerage system when dilutedwith a copious quantity of water. AdBlue is an aqueous solution from which, according to the relevant EU chemicals legislation, there is nosource of any special danger. If, when handling Adblue traces of the product make contact with the skin, it is adequate to simply washthem away using plenty of water.

  • Coolant

    23

Carefully read the instructions before starting any work! This is especially valid for the chapter on General Safety Instructions and the safety instructions in each of the chapters.

    General recommendations

The cooling system only functions reliably when it operates under pre-pressure. Therefore the system must be kept clean and properly sealed; the radiator filler cap and operating valvesmust be functioning correctly and the stipulated coolant level maintained.

Antifreeze agents tested and approved by us guarantee sufficient protection against frost, corrosion andcavitation. They do not attack seals and hoses and do not foam.

The cooling systems of the engine must be filled for the whole year with a mixture of 60% water and 40%antifreeze providing frost protection down to -27C.

    Coolant

Coolants, which contain unsuitable water-antifreeze or have been inadequately or incorrectly prepared, cancause the failure of equipment and components in the cooling circuit as a consequence of cavitation or corrosion damage. In addition, heat-insulating deposits may accrue on heat transferring components, whichleads to overheating and ultimately to the failure of the engine.

For the continuous fault-free operation of MAN diesel engines the coolant should be maintained at all timesof the year as a mixture of 60% water and 40% Water-antifreeze. This guarantees adequate corrosionprotection. In special cases the use of corrosion protection agents (chemicals) is possible in accordancewith the factory standard MAN 248. Emulsifiable corrosion protection oils are fundamentally not permitted.

    Specified ingredients of the coolant

    Water

Potable tap water with the following restricted analytical data may be used:Appearance: colourless, transparent, free of mechanical contaminantsHardness: max 20 German total hardness

35.6 French hardness25 British hardness358 ppm USA hardness

Chlorides: max. 100 ppmSulphates: max. 150 ppmpH at 20C: 6.5 to 8.5Enquires on potable water analyses are to be addressed to the competent authorities.Where no such tap water is available, mix distilled water or distillate or condensate until the analytic valuesare reached.

    Antifreeze with corrosion inhibitor

Permitted antifreeze agents complying with factory standard MAN 324

MAN fuels, lubricants and coolants (approved products) can be found on the Internet at:https://mmrepro.mn.man.de/bstwebapp/BSTServlet

or in the tables from page 63. However, these tables are not current.

    NOTE

Handling of coolants in combination with unsuitable silicon coolant hoses

Component damage due to the incorrect use of silicon coolant hoses.

Therefore: Coolants in accordance with MAN 324 type SNF must not be used in combination with silicon coolant

hoses in accordance with MAN 334 type 3 (blue). Recognisable features of silicon coolant hoses: blue in colour, digit 3 in the

    Item No. e.g.: 04.27405-9150, 50-3x1000.

Only those antifreeze and anticorrosion agents that are approved in the MAN 324 factory standard arepermitted for use. It is recommended to fill the cooling system with an antifreeze and anticorrosion agentas per MAN 324 Type NF.A minimum concentration of 40% by volume is to be maintained since sufficient corrosion protectioncannot be guaranteed below 40% by volume.

The cooling system is designed such that in Central Europe a coolant charge with max 40% b.v. antifreeze (frost protection down to -27C) can be left in the system during the summer months as well, providing the cooling system is in good working order.

At the beginning of the cold weather months the antifreeze content of the coolant may have be in increased for the outside temperatures to be expected (see mixing table).

    Mixing table:

    Prohibited mixture:

    NOTE

    Mixing together of coolants.

Component damage due to incorrect mixing of coolants

Therefore: Coolants as per MAN 324 Type SNF must not be mixed with coolants of Type N or Type NF.

Ready-made antifreezewater mixtures with at least 40% b.v. of an approved antifreeze agent in deionisedwater are permitted.

  • Coolant

    25

Carefully read the instructions before starting any work! This is especially valid for the chapter on General Safety Instructions and the safety instructions in each of the chapters.

    Coolant check and replacement

Always supplement incorrect coolant amounts with a mixture of water and a minimum of 40-50% b.v.(-37C) antifreeze agent to that there is a reserve if only water needs to be topped up

The concentration should be checked once every three months by means of a hydrometer or refractometer

Never allow antifreeze concentration to drop below 40% by volume

A concentration of more than 50% b.v. is to be avoided

    NOTE

Danger of temperature increase in the coolant

An increased proportion of antifreeze agent leads to a temperature increase in the coolant

Therefore: The concentration should be checked every three months by means of a hydrometer or refractometer

Renew complete coolant after 4 years at the latest

Independent of these intervals, the coolant must be replaced if it turns brown or becomes cloudy

  • Coolant

    26

Carefully read the instructions before starting any work! This is especially valid for the chapter on General Safety Instructions

and the safety instructions in each of the chapters.

    Corrosion inhibitor

For certain applications, where the use of antifreeze agents is not mandatory (e.g. tropical climate), corrosion inhibitors according to MAN 248 must be used.

Permitted anticorrosive agents for engine cooling systems complying with factory standard MAN

    248

MAN fuels, lubricants and coolants (approved products) can be found on the Internet at:https://mmrepro.mn.man.de/bstwebapp/BSTServlet

or in the tables from page 63. However, these tables are not current.

The product-specific application concentration can be found in the service products database on the Internet.

    Anticorrosive agent check and replacement

Change all the coolant after one year or after 1500 operating hours, whichever period ends earlier

Independent of these intervals, the coolant must be replaced if it turns brown or becomes cloudy

The product-specific application concentration can be found in the service products database on theInternet

    Prohibited mixture:

    NOTE

Mixing of corrosion inhibitor with water-antifreeze or coolants

Component damage due to the mixing of corrosion inhibitor with water-antifreeze or coolants

Therefore: Anticorrosion agents as per MAN 248 must not be mixed with antifreeze agents or coolants as per

    MAN 324!

When changing from water-antifreeze in accordance with MAN 324 to corrosion inhibitor in accordance withMAN 248 or vice versa, the coolant is to be drained off completely. Flushing out is not necessary.

Disposal of antifreeze and corrosion inhibitors

Undiluted antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor are to be treated as special waste. When disposing of used coolant (mixture of antifreeze or corrosion inhibitor with water) the regulations ofthe responsible local authorities should be followed.
