SAP Note

Header Data

Symptom

You want to run SAP applications on a virtualized Linux platform. This note lists the virtualizationtechnologies supported by SAP.

Other Terms

certification, containers, domain0, ESX GSX, IA64, IBM System i, IBM System p, IBM System z,iSeries, Linux, logical partitioning, LPAR, Novell, pLinux, ppc64, pSeries, Red Hat RHEL, s390x,SLES, SUSE, VirtualIron, Virtualization, Virtuozzo, VMware, vSphere, x64, x86_64, XEN, zLinux, z/VM,IBM zEnterprise, zBX, INxHY

Reason and Prerequisites

Available virtualizations options on the Linux operating system supported by SAP.

Solution

It is supported by SAP to run SAP software on Linux and certain combinations of suitable serverswith the virtualization technologies listed below. The combinations that have been successfully tested by the SAP hardware partners are published onthe webpage

http://sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/linux -> Supported Platforms -> Supported hardware

Notes:

(1) If a hardware partner does not explicitly give a virtualization support statement for some orall servers in his SAP compatibility list, you can consult his general virtualization compatibilityguide (if existant). Below are links for some hardware vendors with statements about virtualizationsupport:

Dell: http://www.dell.com/OSsupport HP: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/ IBM: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/nos/matrix.shtml NEC: http://www.nec.com/en/global/prod/express/related/vmware_compati.html Oracle: https://wikis.oracle.com/display/SystemsComm/Linux+Offerings

https://wikis.oracle.com/display/SystemsComm/VMware+Products

If there is no support statement, you must assume that the respective vendors' servers are notcertified for virtualized SAP environments.

(2) To see if the hardware is supported by the virtualization vendor in general, consult therespective Compatibility Guides:

Citrix: http://hcl.vmd.citrix.com/ Oracle: http://linux.oracle.com/hardware-certifications Red Hat: http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/ SUSE: http://developer.novell.com/yessearch VMware: http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl

(3) There must be support statement from both the hardware vendor and the virtualization vendor sothat a combination is supported for virtualized SAP environments.

Remarks

The virtualization layer consumes additional resources. These additional resource requirements haveto be taken into account when performing server sizing together with your hardware partner. Ask yourhardware partner for adjusted sizing figures for a server if you want to use virtualizationtechnology. Please read attached SAP notes for sizing recommendations for SAP supported

virtualization technologies.

Limitations

Only the more recent SAP releases based upon SAP Kernel version 640 and newer have been fullyenabled on the monitoring side (saposcol, CCMS, st06, st06n) and allow a meaningful analysis of CPUand memory resource consumption of virtualized environments (for details on required saposcol patchlevels and SAP Netweaver support package versions refer to note 1102124). Older releases like 4.6Cand 6.20 do not allow for such an comprehensive analysis with the help of SAP tools. For thisreason, SAP Service and Support may not be able to provide full reporting in services likeEarlyWatch and GoingLive. They may also depend on your help when analysing performance bottlenecks. If you are ready to bear the risk of not having all monitoring information accessible and thus SAPnot being able to provide you with a full analysis of every part of the server / virtualizationinfrastructure, SAP will support you also in virtualized environments running older SAP versionswith productive systems.

However, if support for Third Party software used by SAP is restricted or limited in virtualizedenvironments, this also applies to the use of this software in SAP environments. SAP depends on thesupport from those software vendors and has to pass their limitations and restrictions on to thecustomer. It is the customers responsibility to check for possible limitations.Example: If Oracle publishes restrictions or special support conditions, customers tacitly acceptthese conditions for their SAP system when installing the Oracle version of SAP software.

Supported virtualization products for SAP on Linux production environments

Until version 27 of this note, certified virtualization technologies were listed in this note. AsSAP does not certify virtualization technologies but the corresponding virtualization product, thelist as of version 28 of the note now lists SAP certified virtualization products and/or hardwarecombinations with built-in virtualization.
