    NAACP PARTNERS WITH MOVEON TO PROVIDE HOUSING FOR DISASTER VICTIMSMore than 24,000 beds within driving distance of disaster identified by MoveOn.org Civic

    The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced today that it haspartnered with MoveOn.org Civic Action, a progressive national civil organization, to identify 24,000 beds for

    hurricane victims who are evacuated from the storm ravaged areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

    The offer by members of MoveOn.org Civic Action to provide housing for the victims of Hurricane Katrina isexciting and the positive human side of America, said Gordon. This is a generous, heart-warming gestureand an example of the best of us. It is fantastic to partner with an organization that will bring relief to thepeople of the affected areas.

    MoveOn.org Civic Action's www.HurricaneHousing.org site has identified 24,000 beds within driving distanceof Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, with a total of 72,000 beds nationwide and rising. The NAACP will helpmatch victims with housing opportunities. The Association is also partnering with the nations four largestblack religious organizations, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., the Progressive National BaptistConvention, the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America and the National Baptist Convention of

    America, Inc. to provide relief to the beleaguered victims of possibly Americas worst natural disaster.

    Gordon plans to tour the flood areas this weekend to get a first hand assessment of the tragedy and tocoordinate with NAACP branches that have organized to help distribute food and evacuate victims. TheNAACP is also working to have additional buses go to New Orleans to transport victims out of the city andwith the National Association of Black Owned Hotels to provide hotel rooms. In addition, the NAACP hassecured contributions of emergency supplies for distribution in the flood areas.

    MoveOn.org Civic Action is a nonprofit organization, formerly known as MoveOn.org. It primarily focuses oneducation and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn.org Civic Action was started by Joan Bladesand Wes Boyd, two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who shared deep frustration with the partisan warfare inWashington D.C.

    The NAACP has also partnered with the National Newspaper Publishers Association and American UrbanRadio in an effort to raise funds and to keep our community and the public informed about NAACP efforts.Gordon said, We should keep in mind that this is the first stage in our efforts to aid the victims. The NAACPis in this for the long haul.

    The NAACP has established a disaster relief fund to raise money to assist the storm victims. Contributorsmay make a donation online at www.naacp.org.
