From the President Ken Perley Here it is almost 2014; where did this last year go? I didn’t know what to expect this time last year. I had committed to acting as President of Sons of Norway, Trollheim Lodge for the next two years and I had only an inkling of what that might entail.

Well, let me tell you, this has been a most enjoyable year. You have all been wonderful help and I should never have questioned that for even a moment. Give yourselves a pat on the back for being one of the greatest groups of friends anyone could have; and thank you from this needy individual.

The upcoming year looks to be an exciting one. We will start out with a Leadership Meeting, followed by a Lutefisk Dinner. Then we will gather together to celebrate 40 years! Wow, what a start!

The Dameklub has been working hard on the 40th anniversary dinner and I know they are making great progress. If they ask for your help, please give them a hand.

Your Butikken has been a busy place during the last several months. The preliminary assessment is that it will provide some financial support for the lodge. As you are well aware it costs between $50,000 and $75,000 to support the lodge and its activities each year. Your support is needed and welcomed if we wish to operate with limited financial restrictions.

Here is hoping you had a tremendous Holiday and that 2014 will treat you kindly.

Ken Perley

7 pm – Potluck (Winter foods) Our program will be a Travelog on the "Splendors of Norway" following our Winter Pot Luck Dinner. If you are making plans to travel to Norway this will be a prelude to your trip and for those who have travelled a chance to see again some of your favorite sites. Thanks to the Norwegian Film Board and SONS International for use of this video.

Sharron Ann Ehret

12/19/193611/29/2013

Sharron Ann Ehret, wife of Al Ehret, mother of Albert III, Diane and Cynthia passed away on Nov. 29th, leaving a void in the Ehret family where she was the "Major" of the household. She could mow the lawn, grow a beautiful flower garden, prepare three meals a day, find time for family, plus time to do crossword puzzles and enjoy the comforts of home. Sharron followed the events in the Trollheim Newsletter, and when the time drew near to the date of the event she would call and ask, "Well, what do you need help with?" When given the tasks that needed attention, she was there. Lutefisk Dinners and the Christmas Fair were her favorites. Sharron loved chocolate, Norwegian meatballs, and strong coffee. with her good sense of humor. She gave undivided attention to Al and every day they took two walks around the block. Sharron will be missed at Trollheim, especially in the kitchen. Who will do the bacon and slice the tomatoes, wash the pots and pans, and polish the silverware? We thank you, Sharron for your energy and friendship. We are going to miss you.

A memorial service was held for Sharron on Sunday the 8th of December at Trollheim Lodge. We wish to thank each and everyone for their attendance and contribution of food. Thank you to the kitchen crew for your help. God Bless the family in this time of sorrow. A card or a phone call would be appreciated.

Sunshine Corner By Bev King A warm Happy Birthday wish was sent to Dorothy Williamson who is now 101 years young. Her birthday was in December. Dorothy joined SON on 11-19-1984. We wish her many more years!

Trollheim Lodge has lost another member. Signe Rustad, a member of SON since 1978, passed away on Dec. 7. At this time, daughter Liz Ponder was overwhelmed since her father-in-law also had passed away a few days previously. This was too much to cope with, and information will be submitted later. We will have an obit on hand for the February News.

It was also reported that Connie Bartram had a death in her family. We’ve been told that she is in Montana due to the death of her brother. Cards would be in order: Connie Bartram; 3915 Simms Ct., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033-3873.

From Our Financial Counselor: LaRue Hanson

Retirement plans are often among your largest assets. Unfortunately, they are subject to some of the most complicated taxation; income taxes, premature distribution penalties, and estate taxes. Uncle Sam will one day get his piece of your retirement savings. This can lead to IRA implosion. You can overcome this with some careful planning and help from your Sons of Norway Financial Benefits Counselor. The choice is yours; ultimately liquidate the IRA you have spent a lifetime building or let us help you with a plan to protect your wealth and give you control.

Sons of Norway wants to help you be in charge of your financial dreams.

VOLUNTEER HOURS REPORTING FOR 2013

Every year in January, we are tasked with reporting our volunteer hours for all activities for the Lodge for the last calendar year. We will soon be handing out Trollheim Volunteer Tracking Report Worksheets to everyone so that they can report their volunteer hours for various events. These reports are consolidated and sent to District 6, and then on to SON Headquarters. We anticipate that these reports will be due the beginning of March. If you have any volunteers hours, be sure to report them or ask one of the Board members if they will report your hours on their worksheet. Don Peterson, Lodge Secretary, can provide a worksheet if you need one. It is important to report these hours accurately since this can affect our non-profit status with the IRS. We also will be filling out the Family Lodge of the Year Award form at the same time, although this form is one the officers will work to complete. Thank you for your cooperation. Don Peterson, Secretary, Trollheim Lodge

Trollheim Has Been Challenged! (along with the rest of Dist.6)

Fundraiser: Boxtops for Education and Labels for Education. Contest: Friendly competition between the 8 districts of SON and approved by the Presidents of the districts.

Purpose: Community Outreach

What to do? Just cut those Labels for EDU and Box Tops for Education on many of your grocery products and save them until you can turn them in to a board member. OR, you can donate them “on behalf of the SON” to any school you wish to benefit. Keep a tally how many points you donated, and report it to a lodge officer. (We trust you.).

District 6 President, Lyle Berge has approved this contest and wholeheartedly is behind the lodges in his district. Let’s put some effort into helping our district reach its goal for this Community Outreach

Program. (PS-the goal is winning the challenge! ☺☺☺☺ ) More info in February’s newsletter! Meanwhile, just keep cutting!

It’s been 12 months now since I started doing this newsletter and those months have flown by! There are many I wish to thank for all their help as I became acquainted with the position. Bev King, who asked me to step up to the challenge; Diane Molter who has been a staunch supporter and submitter of news for both my tenures as editor; Dawn Nelsen, the outgoing editor, for her patience with me while I learned the ropes; Barb Hessel for her graphics support as well as “having my back” when it comes to file compression, flyers, and the like; Barb Bessesen for excellent proof-reading and grammer skills; Linda Ault and Danielle Taylor for filling in as proof-readers when needed; Suzanne Christian, for photography; Ken and Carolyn Perley, and the officers and members who have put up with my deadlines and sent the info to put in the newsletter. I appreciate all of you, very much! Thank you for your support!---ELH, editor

More Ole and Lena Jokes! --From various sites online (all jokes are in jest, we love our

Swedish friends!)

-ADVICE-

On Dining Out Lars asked Ole, "Do ya know da difference between a Norvegian and a canoe?" "No, I don't," said Ole. "A canoe will sometimes tip," explained Lars.

On Neighbors Q: What is the difference between Swedes and Norwegians? A: The Swedes have nice neighbors!

On Norwegian Holidays Every year for the 17th of May parade the Swedes line up on one side of the road and the Norwegians on the other. The Swedes throw firecrackers at the Norwegians. Then, the Norwegians light the firecrackers and throw them back.

On Divorce The judge had just awarded a divorce to Lena, who had charged non-support. He said to Ole, "I have decided to give your wife $400 a month for support." "Vell, dat's fine, Judge," said Ole. "And vunce in a while I'll try to chip in a few bucks myself."
