FROM OUR PAROCHIAL VICAR

Dearest St. Thomas Family,

A very Merry Christmas from the entire St. Thomas Parish Staff!

And have a safe and happy New Year!

We love you!

(From top left: Deacon Warren Hecht, Father Chas Canoy, Father Arokiaselvam, Mark Moses, Julie Mussio, Tim Carpenter, Karen Belcher, Glen Johnston, Meghan Gilbert, Angie Austin, Beth Montgomery. Not shown: Cathy Smalley, Karmen Saran, Lucia Campbell, Timothy Tikker, and Tony Moskus)

Welcome to Our Non-Parishioners! Christmastime always brings in more people who are not active members of St. Thomas Par-ish. They may be relatives or friends from out-of-town. They may be “townies” who are curious and come simply to see what exactly these Christians celebrate. We at St. Thomas welcome you! Thank you for joining us this Christmas.

We hope that, through the celebration of Holy Mass, you mysteriously encounter not this what, but this who that we celebrate this holy season. The same Jesus who gave himself as the supreme Christmas gift 2000 years ago desires to give himself to us still.

We receive that Gift with faith, open it with hope, and share it with love. During your time with us, should you sense his drawing you to himself and desire to know him all the more, please feel free to e-mail me at the parish at [email protected], and I will connect you to a St. Thomas parishioner who would be glad to listen to your story and share more about the Per-son who has whispered your name to draw near.

Honor Your Mother! Oh, that Mother! The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, marks the first day of the year. It is a holy day of obligation. But what better way to start the New Year than by receiving the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist! We have four different times for you to attend Mass:

4:30 p.m., Dec. 31 – Vigil Mass on Wednesday evening 9:00 a.m. Jan. 1 – For those who didn’t stay up to see the ball drop

12:10 p.m., Jan. 1 – For those who did

May the infant Child Jesus help us all to “grow young” again!

Fr. Chas

Who are the Knights of Columbus?

We are the largest body of Catholic gentlemen in the world. A unique blend of Catholic Fraternal and insurance features. Father McGivney founded the Knights 126 years ago to assist the widows and children of his parish. The Knights of Columbus soon grew na-tionwide. That purpose has not changed, but actually broadened. The Knights in the state of Michigan were asked by Cardinal Mooney and the Bishops of Michigan to underwrite the expenses of Boysville. The Cardinal saw the need for a place for boys of widows and widowers who needed supervision. The Knights in Michigan donate $15, 000 per month to Boysville, now known as Holy Cross Children Services. The expenses today run several million dollars as they have homes throughout Michigan and Northern Ohio. They have homes not only for boys but also separate homes for girls. A large part of the expenses are underwritten by state and county government. St. Thomas Parish has strong ties to the Knights of Columbus as Bishop Edward D. Kelly was the first state Chaplain and a former priest at St. Thomas. St. Thomas Council dates back to July 14, 1901 and was the seventh council in the state. The council is al-ways looking for Catholic men to join our order. I would encourage you to consider joining the great order of Catholic men. The Knights of Columbus has an outstanding insurance program that is very reasonable. For more information about the Knights of Colum-bus, call Tom Clark at 994-9188.

New Way to Fundraise to Benefit St. Thomas School Now Available

A new additional way to help our St. Thomas School is now available through an on-line shopping web site that pays a commission to the school on every sale. It works very much like the Trip program at the school except that your shopping for various goods and services is done on-line. This is available to all parishioners as well as school families.

To use this web site please log onto bign.com/stthomasaa and click on the Big Red Marketplace window. This web site is ready to go for your use. All products and services are at discount prices and the school receives a commission for all sales placed through this web site.

You can do your Christmas shopping through this site and it will be available all year long. In the very near future, a link to this web site will be available on the new St. Thomas School website that will replace the old website.

Please take advantage of this easy way to do your shopping and also provide some financial assistance to the school. Thank you.

Pro-Life Summit to Take the Pro-Life Movement into the Future

Catholics and all citizens concerned about life issues are urged to attend the post election Pro-Life Summit Saturday, January 10, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Christ the King Parish Center, 4000 Ave Maria Dr., Ann Arbor.

Our nation teeters at the precipice of life and death. Time is of the essence. It is urgent that Catholics and all citizens concerned about the life issues immediately set about planning the practicalities of rebuilding respect and protection for the sanctity of human life throughout our nation.

Bishop Earl Boyea, Diocese of Lansing, will join summit sponsor, Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, and a slate of prominent pro-life leaders in planning the strategy and practicalities needed to move the pro-life efforts forward in the present moral dark night.

This summit is an opportunity for the Catholic Church to stand as an uncompromising witness raising her God-given prophetic voice against the present Culture of Death. As His Holiness John Paul II said, "Do not be afraid! Do not be afraid!"

Other presenters include Deal Hudson of insidecatholic.com and President of Morley Institute for Church and Culture; Al Kresta, Executive Director of Ave Maria Radio; Fr. Frank Pavone, founder of Priests for Life, Ed Rivet, Legislative Director of Right to Life of Michigan; Joe Scheidler, Executive Director of Pro-Life Action League; and Professor Janet Smith, Michael J. McGivney Chair of Ethics, Sacred Heart Seminary.

Registration is $30 per person, $20 for high school and college students. No cost for Clergy. To pre-register call Judy Parran, 517-546-3092, or send check payable to Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, 4074 Falmouth Lane, Howell, MI 48843. For additional information visit http://www.dioceseoflansing.org or http://www.prolifesociety.org
