1 0 SCOPE

1 1 This specification covers the general requirements for materials, design,

fabrication, inspection, testing and supply of Glass-Reinforced PlasticGRP) tanks for installation at the Facility in Kuwait.

1.2 This specification compliments the data sheets for the equipment, inwhich the operating conditions and other requirements are listed indetail.

1.3 The supply of GRP tanks shall fully comply with all relevant contractualrequirements specified in the Scope of Work and Technical Specificationof the Contract.

2 0 ST ND RD SPECIFIC TIONS

2.1 GRP tanks shall conform in design, materials and performance, exceptwhere otherwise specified, wi th the current issue and amendments ofthe following prevailing on the effective data of the Contract:

2.2 Compliance wi th this specification shall not relieve the Contractor of itsresponsibility to supply equipment suited to meet the specified serviceconditions and applicable regulations.

2.3 Where conflicts exist between this specification and other Drawings,standards, codes and specifications, the most stringent shall be applied.

3 0 SERVICE CO NDITIONS

3.1 The GRP tanks shall be suitable for continuous operation without

degradation at a desert location under high ambient temperatures andhumidity. The atmosphere at the Facility is generally dusty andcorrosive and may contain traces of hydrogen sulphide.

3 2 GRP tanks shall in all respects be suitable for continuous operation in theservice conditions stated in the Engineering Group Specification entitledBasic Design Criteria (Number 015-AH-1001 .

4 0 TECHNIC L REQUIREMEN TS

4 1 General

4.1 I he following information shall be provided by the Contractor forCompany review and approval:

a. Values of design factors K1 to K5, inclusive.

b. Type of resin and resin filler.

c. Details of corrosive barrier or internal lining.

d. Main dimensions of vessel.

e. Type and number of reinforcement layers.

f. Resin cure systems and whether elevated temperature

curing is included.

g Hydrostatic test pressure.

h. Empty weight.

4 4 Gaskets

Gas ket m aterial shall be as specif ied on th e vessel data sheet.

4 5 hemical Liner

4.5.1 Thermo plastic l iners shall be used whe re stated on th e vessel data

sheet.

4.5.2 Where thermoplastic l iners are not used, a smooth, wrinkle-freeresin-r ich surface shall be provided as an internal corrosionresistan t barr ier. The resin-r ich layers shall co nta in no t less tha n

4 6 Description of Laminate

4 6 1 Structural Reinforcement

a. The structura l laminate shall provide adequate mechanicalstrength to withstand the design loadings.

b. The laminate shall be cons tructed from CSM, wo venrovings or cont inuous f i laments alone or in com binat ion.

The structural laminate shall include:

a. An inner layer consist ing of three layers of CSM (450g1sq.m) in con tac t wi th th e chemical l iner.

b. An outer layer consisting of tw o layers of CSM (45 0-6 00

c . The m inimum thicknes s of the structural laminate shall be5 mm.

4 7 Exterior Surface

The exter ior surface shal l be a resin-r ich layer reinforced with type Cglass veil.

5 3 Pressure Uplift

All tanks containing internal pressure shall be checked for upl i ft. Holdingdo w n bol ts shall be provided where necessary.

5 4 Desinn Cycles

All tanks shal l be designed for 1000 cycles operation i.e., K4 1 -1, forBS 4994) unless otherwise specified.

5 5 Wind Loads and Applied Loads

5.5.1 Tanks shal l be self-supporting and designed to w ithsta nd the ful lspecif ied w ind loading based on the ma ximum vert ical project ionof exposed surface, which shal l include insulation, platforms,ladders, pipework, overhead vapour l ines and other equipmentassociated wi th th e tanks.

5.5.2 Unless otherwise specified, wind loads shal l be calculated inaccordance with BS CP3, Chapter V, Part 2, w ith the w indve loc ity o f 4 5 m ls a t a he ight o f 1 0 m f rom the grade leve l.

5.5.4 Eccentric moments induced by the weight of equipment

supported from the tank together with resultant moments due topiping thrusts shall be additive to wind moments.

5.5.5 Dynamic loads shall be taken into account where appropriate.

5 6 Nozzle Loads

5.6.1 The Contractor shall advise the Company-Approved Manufacturerof the external forces or moments acting on tank nozzles. TheContractor shall be responsible for ensuring that the tank designis adequate to withstand such loads. In order to avoid damage atsite all nozzles are to be capable of withstanding the weight of aman (800 N .

5.6.2 In the case of proprietary packages which include tanks andpiping the Contractor shall ensure that neither the piping systemnor the tanks are overstressed. Copies of design calculationsshall be submitted to the Company for review and approval.

5.7 In no circumstances shall the thickness of the corrosion barrier or thethermoplastic lining be included in the thickness calculated to withstandthe design conditions or loadings.

5.8 Maximum stress in hold-down bolts shall be 103 N/mm2 based on theroot area.

5.9 Recommended bolting torques shall be provided by the Company-Approved tank Manufacturer and shown on the manufacturing Drawing.

6 0 CONSTRUCTION

6 1 Flannes

6.1 . I Unless otherwise specified flange dimensions for bolt ing shallconform to ASME 816.5 Class 150 . Instrument flanges shall beclass 300 .

6.4.1 Removable internals shall be designed to pass throu gh the tank

6 5 Supports

6.5.1 Flat-bottom ed vertical tanks shal l be ful ly supp orted over the

enti re bottom by a smooth and continuous surface. A sof tsurface, e.g., sandlbitum en or bitum en felt on a smoo th concretepad, shall be used. Protrusion greater than 3 m m shall not beperm itted. The use of pressure grouting shall not be permitted.

6.5.8 In all cases the Contractor shal l check the streng th of th e tanksupports, taking into acc oun t th e operating conditions, si tehyd raulic testing, wind, seismic and ecc entric loads asappropriate.

6 6 ttachments

6.6.1 Each tank shall be provided w i th a nameplate in accordance wi thcodes requirements.

6.6.2 The Company-Approved tank Manufacturer shal l furnish andattach al l insulation support r ings, pipe supports, platform and

ladder clips, lifting lugs and other attachments as and whererequired by the appropriate tank data sheet.

6 6 3Vertical tanks shall be provided wi th permanent lif ting lugs.

7 0 FABRICATION

7 1 Chem ical Liner

7 1 I The full chemical liner shall be applied to all interior surfaces ofthe tank including blank flanges, etc.

7 1 2Tank internals shall have the full chemical liner applied to all

surfaces in contact with the process fluid or vapour.

7 2 Therm oplastic Linings

7 2 1 All welds shall be positioned so that they miss nozzle openings bya minimum of 50 mm.

7 2 2Graphite powderlresin paste shall be applied behind all welds toprovide a permanent earth path for spark testing. Permanentmetal foils shall not be permitted.

7 2 3All welders shall be qualified to Company requirements beforemanufacturing commences.

7 3 Laminate Lay up

7 3 1 The chemical liner including any backing layers required underparagraph 4 5 3 hall be laid up by hand.

7 3 2The structural layer may be laid up by hand CSM and/or woven

rovings) or by machine-controlled filament winding.

7 3 3Adjacent layers of woven rovings shall not be permitted.

7 3 4The use of machine-controlled spray application of choppedrovings in lieu of CSM is prohibited unless agreed in writing wi ththe Company. When spray application is agreed to, then:

a. It shall be restricted to the structural laminate only.

b. The inner layer o the structural laminate shall be laid up byhand.

7 3 5 Hand-controlled spray application of chopped rovings isprohibited.

8.1.1 All tanks shall be inspected and tested in accordance wi thBS 4994 together wi th any additional tests as may be called forin this specification and the tank data sheet.

8.1.2 All tests shall be completed before the application of thepigmented gel coat.

8.1.3 All tanks with thermoplastic linings shall be spark tested inaccordance wi th BS 4994 paragraph 35

8.1.4 All tests shall be carried out in the presence of the Company.

8 2 Visual Examination

All laminates shall be visually inspected during manufacture. Theacceptability of defects shall be in accordance wi th BS 4994 Table 16

Repair procedures shall be approved by the Company.

8 3 Hydraulic Test

8.4.1 All tanks shall be subjected to a hydraulic test at the approvedworks in accordance wi th the requirements of BS 4994. The

pressure shall be held for a minimum of 1 hour. The test pressureshall be approved by the Company.

8.4.2 Unless otherwise agreed all tanks containing liquids whosespecific gravity exceeds 1.0 shall be tested so that the

hydrostatic head produced in service is reproduced in the test.

8.4.3 Gaskets used during hydraulic testing shall be of the same type

and material as the service gaskets. Service bolts shall be fit tedfor testing.

Al l tanks designed for vacuu m shall be subjected to a vacuu m test at1.3 t imes design vacuu m pressure but not more than fu l l vacuum. Thevacuu m shall be held for a minimum o f 1 hour.

9.0 FINISHING

9.1 Unless oth erw ise stated, all external GRP surfaces shall be pigme ntedl igh t blue.

9.2 Al l carbon steel surfaces, w hether or no t encased in GRP shall becleaned of al l rust b y sandblasting and ho t dip galvanised. Paintingrequirements shal l be as per the Engineering Group Spe cification enti t led

Shop and Field Painting (Number 0 1 5-XH-1005) .

9.3 All tanks shal l have the warn ing Plastic E quipment Handle w it h Carestenc i lled in tw o p laces in le t ters a t least 15 0 m m h igh.

10.0 MISCELLANEOUS

10 .1 Service gaskets (including one spare gasket) and bolting for al l blankednozzles, man way s, bod y flanges shal l be supplied.

10.2 Unless otherwise indicated on the mechanical data sheet, th e shop-testgaskets shall be re-f i t ted for transi t w i th the service bol ts.

10.3 Spares, whe re required, and service gaskets shal l be clearly tagged w iththe ta nk i tem number and Co mpany order number, and shall be suitablyboxed for transi t .

10.4 The tanks shall be provided w i th t w o carbon steel earth ing clips, sui tablybonded into the tank shell. The cl ips shall be dr il led to a ccept M I 0bolting.
